Witten replaces the 2nd or 3rd draft pick we would have used on TE, which will now be a late round pick who goes to the Practice Squad. Rico is in the same position no matter what, he has to break out next year or he gets cut.

And for everyone complaining about Witten, there is very little doubt the team told him he would have a reduced role if he came back - and Witten agreed.

Also 2017 was the worst season of his career with 63 catches and that still would have been the 8th best total in the NFL for a TE. I actually like the idea of Witten and Jarwin as the primary TEs with Schultz rotating into both spots.

Yeah, we’re at an impasse. I strongly disagree with both of your assertions. I don’t think a 25 snap count guy adequately addresses our need at TE (though I agree that they’re done at TE) and I don’t agree that they won’t spend to the cap this year.

We’ll have to revisit this argument down the line to see which of us was correct, if either of us still cares.

A lot of the viewpoint is in how each fan sees Jarwin and Schultz. I see them as on the rise, and while I don't expect them to become Travis Kelce level players, I think between the 2 of them they can become a strong TE combo. I'll readily admit reasonable people can disagree with that, because admittedly there isn't enough history with the two for a definitive evaluation, but in my mind they showed enough the last 4-5 games of the season that we need to make that evaluation before committing big resources to another TE. Witten helps buy that time. If a person doesn't feel the same as I do about Jarwin and Schultz, they naturally will feel differently about ways TE can be addressed.

Eh... for 1 year? 3.5 with a chance to get to 5?
I doubt it's going to be a huge deal. The team still has opportunities and maneuvers they can make easily.
I wouldn't go adding any more wrinkles to that handsome forehead of yours.

I'm not the one worrying. I'm saying what you are. The Witten contract isn't a big deal.

I'm worrying? Me specifically?
Shoot... I forgot to tell myself this.

Thank you for informing me!

Pray allow me to furrow my brow right now...

Grrr... Brow is officially furrowed. Rowr.

I think they may draft a TE in a rich class regardless, perhaps not at 58.

I don't see them cutting any of the 3 they have, and if I'm right they will have to carry 4 TE's. Of course they did that last year before Swaim got hurt, but that was a different situation in that only one of the 4 had ever caught an NFL pass before, and that one had only caught a small handful. There is a little more background with the group they have now, and I think the Cowboys would prefer to use that extra roster spot on another position.

I expect we'll pursue a trade for Gathers.

No, I'm not saying you are worrying. I'm saying others here are, and my response to them was the same as what you wrote to me - that the Witten contract is not a big deal.

$3.5 million base. Not bad for top 10 TE. Kind of makes the Gregory pain a little more bearable since we won't have to focus on TE high in the daft and can focus on DE/DT

Right on. I can unfurrow my brow now.
And I'm quite glad about this because it makes my forehead cramp.

You know? With him having had a year off, this might actually work. He had time to rest and get his body right. I think he might come back with a bit of a vengeance, and maybe a bit of reinventing. Plus, he's been able to see the weaknesses of teams that we're likely to face. This could be quite good.

My biggest worry about Witten coming back was the team giving him is old role back. The man ran 97% of the snaps the last season he played. We can all agree he’s too slow now to be that guy. The only way I would be cool with him on the team would be in a redzone, run-blocking, 3rd down role. Well it looks like that’s whats going to happen..

This would be unlike the typical homer FO move if we actually made him the niche player he should be. And predictability isn’t an issue with Witten because he’s the classic “know what’s coming can’t stop it guy”. Just not at a 97% snap count rate. I know approve of this move by the FO.

What about y’all?
