My initial point was this is not news.

Ok, I disagree. I think the "news" is not that the team is in fact bringing Hurns back, the "news" is the fact that they are apparently dumb enough to bring him back under his current ridiculous contract.

Here is the problem in Dallas summed up perfectly:

The 27-year-old Hurns didn’t do a lot for the Cowboys last season, catching only 20 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns despite playing in all 16 games. Once the Cowboys got Amari Cooper involved in their offense, Hurns became a non-factor.

But Hurns is a well-liked and well-respected player, and the Cowboys think they can still get something out of him this season, despite that serious injury.

$6 million on a guy who gave you just 20 catches last year. And a receiver trying to come back from a serious ankle injury.

Oh, but he's "well liked", and that's what's most important in Dallas.

And that's why they never win anymore.

Stas... I think you're overlooking team/player financial decisions are based on players future potential. To his credit, Allen didn't get many targets last season. Remember him complaining a few times about not being involved enough? He'll now be a starter. I'm not he's an All-Pro but I certainly think he's more than a 20-catch player.

He actually made some decent catches when Cooper got here.

He’s not a number one guy but we have the cap room and he’s a fine 4th or 5th option which is what he will be.

It’s not like him being here will keep us from signing anyone else. I guarantee we will be more than 4 million under the cap come week one.

If Bease would play for a 4 million base we would keep him instead of Hurns. I'm now on the keep Hurns train unless we draft Andy Isabella.

We have 61 players under contract next season with 30 million in cap space.

Do we have to release him to have cap flexibility?
No

Does releasing him making us a better team?

No....after Gallup and Cooper, our receivers under contract have a total of 9 catches combined with all of them from Noah Brown.

Lastly...if he stinks in camp or if someone is out performing him, we can release him and still have 5 million in savings.

Hurns is entering his 6th year in the league. And he's coming back from a serious ankle injury. Potential has left town.

Big difference between 1 year, 5 million and a 7 year, 100 million contract.

Especially when you have at least 5 other players that want to be paid like the best at their positionlined up behind Lawrence that you want to keep long term as well.

All that being said, the cowboys keeping Hurns isn’t an emergency or some kind of majorly disappointing decision. He is ok for a #3 or #4 WR on a team. And they can still cut him later to save money if needed. If cedrick Wilson or a draft pick or anyone else outplays him in the off season he could still be gone.
