Fish: Cowboys will pick up Hurns option by March 12

While we have people who are actually going to defend wasting money on guys like Hurns, Lee and Witten, they will in the same breath talk about how fiscally irresponsible it is to pay Lawrence or Thomas. Just further proof that whatever the Jones’ say some will just lap up. Build through the draft. Go team go.

Hawkeye, i think you're reaching - badly - for some silver lining that's not there.

I mean seriously, "future potential"? Come on now.

Hurns is entering his 6th year in the league. And he's coming back from a serious ankle injury. Potential has left town.

I'm not saying I agree with what he's going to make but as a full-time starter and Beasley's replacement, his numbers are not that far off. The key here is he will now be a starter. I assume you're thinking he's NOT starting material.

I’m thinking HE IS WHAT HE IS. And he IS a 20-catch a year disappointment.

Fans now want to project so that this move somehow looks less stupid than what it is.

I doubt he stays on the books for that much they can restructure or ask him to take less later..at this point he should, lucky after the injury he wasn't forced into retirement..

No, they can’t. Figure out what this option means.

He's simply competing for the slot position at this time. We'll have leverage to force a paycut or just cut himif he doesn't win the position outright by the end of preseason.

Folks act like this is guaranteed money when it is not
exactly the overaction on financial and player moves from the know it alls in here is out of control, relax let all this playout we are months away from even TC..

And the homers blindly rubber stamp everything yet again, even when they have no idea what they’re actually talking about.

and the pessimist come our long before the results are even in..your point Negative nanny? you once again and the 4 trollers have zero experience running a billion dollar professional sports team or in the management of one.. I trust a teams entire staff over you all that for dang sure..

can we see the final roster, cap numbers, and some actual games played before we write the moves off as dumb, again coming from a Internet hero gm vs real staff of financial and management, ill take the Front office every time.. they have plan and id like to see it before I piss all overit..

What's funny about this is that you could go back year after year and find similar responses saying hey, be patient, I have faith this will all work out............ and then it never really does.

It's a peculiar move to keep Hurns IMO. For starters, it's unclear if he will even be ready to play at the start of the season. Two, you can probably find a WR that could match his production for a fraction of what you are going to pay him. Once training camp hits, it's not like there are going to be tons of options out there if Hurns proves he can't secure a job.

I think the smarter move would be cut him now, save the $5MM in cap space and sign another WR that you know will ready come Sept 1.

And before the inevitable "you are just a hater", note that I was firmly behind signing him last year. I thought he did some good stuff in Jax when he had a competent QB throwing him the ball. But at this point, you have Cooper and Gallup and not much else. I think I'd rather cut him, save the $5MM and bring in a vet that I know will be ready to go Sept 1.

Now if there is a soon to be contract restructure that forces him to take a pay cut, that makes this a bit more palatable.

Sure you do. Despite 23 years plus of no results. You set your bar as low as it needs to be and check your brain at the door.

I saw it.
Last year.
20 catches.

I saw “actual games played”. Not wishful thinking from fans.

What the Super Fans fail to realize is that picking up this option is guaranteeing him $4 million in salary for 2019. Therefore, any negotiating or pay cut is gone. Leverage zero. There is no revisiting anything in training camp. That’s why the option happens NOW, pay the guy or he hits free agency, that’s how they work.

But some people are so blinded by their fandom that common sense flies out the window.

He gets a 4m base and 1.25m in game-day roster bonuses

Way too much for a 6th or 7th option for Dak

How is he a 6th or 7th option if he's Beasley's replacement ( according to Stephen) as starting slot receiver?

One he isn't a slot replacement for Beasley..... he has no quicks

Second you have ACooper, Gallup, the real Slot WR, Witten, Jarwin, Zeke, RB3.... then AHurns for 1 catch a game

Guessing this means he's the new slot receiver, meaning it's unlikely Beasley's back.

Odd move.

Considering the cost of free agent WRs, the 4M salary is low for a veteran with ANY ability.

The Cowboys have made route running their top focus for WRs and Hurns is a good route runner and knows the offense better than Dez ever did.

Hurns was functional as the 4th WR after Cooper arrived and Gallup had progressed.

The problem is that Hurns looked sluggish and that was before the injury.

I would prefer to use the 1-year, 4M on Tavon Austin.
