Fish: Cowboys will pick up Hurns option by March 12

Emotions don't equal reality.

Nice attempt. Fail. Nothing “emotional” whatsoever calling a stupid move for what it is.

Care to dispute that?

Tell us how $300,000 a catch is “good”. I’m all ears.

The Cowboys won the division AND for 2019 and 2020 have about 2x or more the cap space of the other NFCE teams.

With NOTHING FROM ALLEN HURNS? Explain how your comment is relevant.

Cap management is NOT a problem for the Cowboys.

The Hurns move is odd but their cap management and talent acquisition process the past few years has been terrific.

While their best defender remains unsigned...

They didn't lose the Rams game due to a lack of talent. They lost because of the coaches got out-coached in a big way.

More irrelevance.

Personnel moves are always a probability decision (i.e. Teams assess the probability that a player will be worth the contract or in the draft, worth the pick).

The David Irving at 2M tender was a good risk/reward bet because his upside was a 20M per type player.

How’d it work out last year with Hurns? $4.5 million for 20 freaking catches. But yeah, sign up for another year of that. WITH INJURY ADDED IN.

Go Cowboys!

There is no risk. Picking up his option is just insurance.

If a better option becomes available through free agency or the draft the cowboys can still cut Hurns. The option doesn’t include additional guaranteed money.

It guarantees him $4 million in 2019 salary. Why do you think the option exists?

From everything I read the 4 million isn’t guaranteed. It is a club option. I could be wrong but a couple articles I read said it isn’t guaranteed.

Exactly, sometimes this front office makes me want to vomit

Both these articles state the 4 million option is not guaranteed. Therefore, cowboys can still cut Hurns before the start of the season if they find a better alternative.

Picking up Hurns option is risk free insurance if they don’t get somebody better from the draft or FA.

I WANT the cowboys to resign Beasley or get somebody better for the slot from the draft or FA. But picking up Hurns option involves zero risk and does nothing to prevent that.

He says he will be football ready. He's coming off a significant leg injury. Plus, time and time again we see guys coming off significant injuries, especially leg injuries where it could take a season or so for them to even find their legs again.

This is just an unnecessary risk IMO. Signing him last year was a pretty good move IMO. I am just not sure picking up the option is a wise move given what's happened.

Here's what Garrett is saying and is saying and I assume he's speaking for McCay, Stephen, and Jerry......

Yes, the club option to pick it up by March 13th. Then he gets that $4 million in salary, and essentially everything his contract called for.

That’s what the option is, to stay or quit. That’s how they work, otherwise, what is the point of an option?

The cowboys can still cut Hurns and get the money back. The option is not guaranteed.

The point of the option is to benefit the club in this situation because it allows them to choose if they want to keep Hurns or not at that agreed price.

As to why Hurns agreed to a non guaranteed option, you would have to ask him or his agent that question.

Hurns only sees this 4 million if he is on the roster during the regular season.

There absolutely is risk given you are counting on a guy coming off a major injury and hasn't done much in recent seasons to come back totally healthy, not have any hangover from a significant broken leg injury and just slide into the key 3rd WR spot.

But I will grant you this............. yes, if a FA option presents itself to them, sure, they could cut him. But you and I both know that's not how this front office operates. In picking up the option, they are not looking for a good 3rd WR in FA or the draft. They believe they have solved the slot WR spot now and when/if it doesn't work out, they'll find themselves in a bind come late August.

I think the more prudent move is just that - find a 3rd WR in FA.

If I’m wrong I’ll admit it, but these articles make no sense. What is the point in having an option that affects nothing?

These options are there so a team either agrees to pay the player or they release them to hit free agency. That’s why they exist and why they happen now.

I don’t think so. I think they’ve got it wrong. No player is signing a pay me if you feel like it deal like that.

I think the option is simply the Cowboys being able to hold him for 2019 at that contract amount. And the more I look, it doesn't look like they can save $5MM on the cap if they cut him after picking up the option. There is a $1MM roster bonus due, and one place said it's due on the 13th, which means you have to eat it if cut down the road.

That’s a separate issue than the contract itself though Sydla. That’s the point. Then picking up the option right now involves no risk.

If you’re asking if I trust the FO to do well in free agency, then of course the answer is no. Lol

None of what Drummond or Archer is saying qualifies as an "option". What they're saying is that the Cowboys are agreeing to pay Hurns, unless they decide not to. It makes no sense. No player is going to sign his rights away for a team to pay him if they feel like it later on, when the player then has no options.

I'm calling shenanigans with how they're reporting this.

I feel you stash. I really do. Believe me. I want to UPGRADE the team. I would much prefer Beasley back or a better option like Humphries or a draft pick.

And like you I DO NOT trust the FO to do well in free agency.

But I don’t think picking up his option itself is necessarily a negative. Them using it as an excuse to not find somebody else will be the problem. Lol
