I think Lawrence will sign now or he will lose money

Now that the Cowboys have Quinn coming aboard it will give them some leverage. Lawrence will either sign, or get traded, or get released and the Cowboys can use that money elsewhere. I don't think that other teams can pay more than the 20 million a year that the Cowboys have offered. Now the longer Lawrence goes without surgery, the less value he will have. The Cowboys can sign him, or trade him, or tell them no deal on the tag and let him go. If the Cowboys let him go or trade him, they can sign another dlineman on a one year deal. If his agent has any sense Lawrence will sign soon or he will end up losing money.

Law would get signed for over 20 million the minute he hit the market.

Tank actually has the leverage. Without getting that shoulder surgery Dallas can't get proper value back in trade (1st rounder). Also, the team would have a bottom third pass rush without him which would expose those safeties further and put more pressure on Dak to be something he is not...a shoot-out QB. I think Dallas will need to bit the bullet here and give him his money and cut financial corners with Dak & Cooper.

That would set this franchise back years of they did that. Makes no sense to give Lawrence all that money and let Cooper and Dak walk. That's one of the most foolish things i have ever heard someone say.

Why would they release him and get nothing. If he is not traded, and does not sign his tender, then he sits for a year. Then his value will be down possibly in 2020. We will get a comp pick then in some form. IF some team signs him to a decent contract.
He will not get what he wants, as teams may consider him a problem, since he is being stupid and holding off getting his shoulder repaired in the mean time. That is just stupidity. That just shows he will be a problem down the road wanting more than he thinks he is worth.

They would release him to use the money on another dlineman. I really think that he will sign soon. He can't risk it. That's what I think.

I didn't say let them walk. I just think Tank is one un-replaceable player on this team. I would also bring in back-up QB just in case Dak negotiations get as ugly.

But id he does not sign the tender, then that does not count against the cap.
I understand though they can't use it to sign another player until they know for sure. But it does nothing to release him. as there is no player out there to sign to make an impact either.

I too think he signs at some point. Even if just for the year tender. Agree, he can't risk it for long a term deal, ere or with any other team.

QB is the most important position on the team and the most harder to replace. Lawrence isn't Mack or Donald and later round ends have had some success. Easier to replace a LE than it is a QB.

He would sign it. The Cowboys can't let it drag out where he can sign it in July and sit out games while rehabbing It has to get settled soon or else he loses. No team will pay him while he isn't getting the surgery that he needs.

Agreed on every point you made, Jazzcat, but I wouldn't feel comfortable at all paying D-Law his $20 million tag if he ends up missing any games to start the season simply because he chose to surgically repair his shoulder at the very last minute before training camp, etc.

Is there not any way the Cowboys could deduct pay from that tag price if D-Law misses games while rehabbing simply because he chose to surgically repair his shoulder right before training camp or the season starts?

Really? How? There is a salary cap and he needs surgery.
Teams would figure out how to fit him under. Surgery or not he is a elite DE. Many consider that the most important position other than QB.

His cap hit would only be like 10 mil. If a team wanted him they could do it for sure

Nope, they chose to tag him so his money is guaranteed and he can fulfill the contract by playing in 10 games. Then he is free to go anywhere he wants. He has all the leverage now because the FO tagged him last year and pissed away the opportunity to get a deal done last year.

That sucks.

We can’t teade him till he signs the tag. We can let his agent shop him around to teams that know he’s gonna miss games his first year, is gonna cost Mack like money and they will know that only tank can approve a trade so why offer much
People forget tank can wait this out and sign the tag in June and then have his surgery and miss most if not the whole season and still make 20 mil
Quinn changes nothing for tank
It makes fans think we solved a problem but in fact we replaced Gregory with a guy who will likely have around the same sacks but less effective against the run than Gregory
Now I don’t think they will or should give tank 85 million guaranteed but at some point we may be forced to pull the tag
The team has no leverage at all

They would probably have something in the contract about that, but then he may not want to sign it either if they did. All depends when it would be signed I guess.
