Let’s not overrate Rams loss on run D

Please tell me your joking...

The Rams plan was simple...they blocked 7 vs 6 in the box all night long. Their guards had free reign to the 2nd level....all night long.

Instead of adjusting by getting our DT's head up on their guards...so our LBers were free to run and makes tackles like they did all season long. Our ******* staff did nothing. Absolutely nothing.

I take that back...they inserted Sean Lee for LVE....who was even more ineffective.

Why they widened up our DEs to create the grand canyon for the Rams to run...just absurdly dumb. Who would be able to stop that??? Name one DT in the entire league...

Worst defensive game plan...maybe ever conceived. Just look @ this photo...and tell me we weren't screwed from the get go. We sat back w/ 6 guys in the box...and let them have their way w/ us. We didn't blitz....We didn't bring in a 3rd LBer...we just got throttled in the 4-2-5.

Still pisses me off...that an NFL coaching staff w/ this much experience did so little to stop the slaughter.

Good post!

Been saying this since the game!

Marinelli is stubborn or incompetent, maybe a bad mixture of both.

Should have been fired.

BTW, why did JasonG allow this to continue!?!

Of course you can't blame this all on the defense the offense was pitiful for 3/4 and put the defense in bad situations No Doubt

Cowboys defense vs Saints = great coaching by Richard

Cowboys defense vs Rams = bad coaching by Garrett

:muttley:
Well it's known Richard is responsible for the secondary and Marinelli for the D Line. The rams came out and said they knew exactly what the D line was doing every play. So it falls on Marinelli. Who the heck hires an 0-16 coach anyway. I would think that would be the kiss of death for coaching but not for jerry

Doesn't Richard call the plays?

Richard has been here 1 season, placed in an existing system that hasn't worked yet. 270 yards in the playoffs. That happens whether he's here or still in Seattle. Hard to blame him. You want a DC you want to pin blame on that guy, you give him full control and see where that goes. Right now this situation is another ridiculous setup by the front office.

Doesn't matter what the coach calls if his guys are getting beat by the other guys. It all comes down to what any coach can do within the limitations of his talent. The Cowboys faced two of the better OL's in IND and LA and didn't do well against either because their OL's are better than the Cowboys DL's.

NE was able to stymie LA with 6 DL on the line, how could they do that? Because behind them were two top 10 CB's, it all comes down to talent allowing coaches more latitude.

Do we think any DC likes to play BDBD? They do that out of necessity, the lesser of two evils. In order for the Cowboys to have been able to make real adjustments, they would have needed a talent infusion. McVay wanted them to commit to stopping his run game but they couldn't stop it so he just kept it coming. They were as surprised as much as we were that they rushed for 270.

However, to the OP's statement of "let's not overrate" that one game, they have to react to that because that is exactly what the teams they will face are going to do until the Cowboys prove they can't. And the Cowboys have Barkley and now Howard in the division.

I also heard that the playing field wasn't in the best of condition. I still say it was the coaching staff never adjusted to what the Rams was doing.

Many posters keep citing the Rams loss as a reason to get bigger run stuffers on the DL. While it is always embarrassing to give up 270 yards rushing in a playoff game, everything points to that game being an outlier. In 2018, our run defense was 5th overall in the league. We were fourth in the league in average yards per rush (3.8). We shut down great running teams like NO and SEA. We had two bad games: IND and LAR. As has been reported, the LAR collapse had more to do with being out coached than poor effort or play by our DTs. When you watch the video, there are gaping holes because DTs are out of position, not necessarily because they were being blown off the ball. And we cannot discount that we just got a bad “field matchup.” We are built for speed and penetration on turf. Put same DL on that soft, sloppy grass field and they are not as quick and disruptive.

All this is to say that... do not be surprised or disappointed when in the 2nd or 3rd round we go with an undersized 3T like Gerald Willis, Zach Allen, Jaylon Ferguson, LJ Collier, rather than a 320+ pound run stuffer. And if we do, we’ll be fine.
DL's that are built for speed are notorious for getting blown out in the playoffs. Yup, we'll be fine until we face the big dawgs in the playoffs, and then we won't.

I think there is some truth in both sides.

Our run defense as whole was very good.

But TWO games last year in particular we were gashed. Both games we played against mountains for olines.

We need some beef to come in for those type games/situations. We dont have to draft necessarily at the top for that beef, but we need them on the roster imo.
Well said.

Field was only bad for the cowboys...Rams didn't give up 270 yards. Rod was a good D coach...no longer. Time to hang it up.

D-Law was saying in his interview that the Defense was tired in the rams game. Playing the seahags took a lot out of them. And not coming out to a fast start and solidifying there spot in the division. The later season run to dig themselves out of the hole.
