They want to get deals done this year so they can get around the 30% Rule next year since the CBA is expiring

Getting it done now allows them to pro-rate the big Signing Bonus sooner and allows for a tiny base salary Year One

100%......this makes sense.

The key is a TEAM and a scheme that works for what you have
The right scheme I think Dak can be a good
They had it set up for Romo and it has worked well for Dak also. Just drive the bus and make the plays when you have to.

Yeah but by then it'll be too late
We'll be on the hook for 22 mill per year for several years (including his bonus)

I guess that depends what folks consider too late.

Well, if we believe Stephens comments recently, it sounds like the contract for Dak is inevitable wether fans like it or not. Sooo..

Let’s assume he signs a 5 year contract structured similar to DLaws. Where as by 3 years of the contract, Dallas conceivably could let Dak go without much dead money accrued. (Or best case scenario, could trade Dak to a QB needy team).

Now let’s assume Dak “under performs”. And I use quotation marks bc his worst year statistically still wasn’t horrible (2017- 3,300+, 22td, 13ints, 86.6rating). But for debate purposes, let’s say he dosen’t improve on these stats as most would assume he should do this year. Then what?

If Dallas is just convinced that Dak isn’t the answer, then we could (move up if needed) draft a QB and hope the next guy pans out. Just as the Browns how easy drafting QB’s is o_O. At this point we would have a young QB studying the playbook waiting to take over within 2 years much like Romo, Brady, and Rodgers did for their respected teams. My point, it’s not the end of the world if Dak signs a contract.

On the flip side, Let’s assume Dak improves..Throws nearly 4K yards again, has 25 passing TDs/8 rushing TDs, lass than 10ints, with a 100 passer rating..all these things he nearly did last year. Leads the Cowboys to the playoffs for the 3rd time in 4 years., but can’t get past the divisional round. Are we screaming for Daks job or Garrett’s? Then what will people say or expect?

All I know is..last year, I seen a team that looked dismal and had no chance to make the playoffs. Then we added a WR that could make a difference and provide relief for the “loaded defensive boxes” we were seeing week after week. Even with the dreaded play calls of Scott Linehan, Dak not only lead his team to the Playoffs, we beat a surging Seahawks team. Then we lost to the Rams that most will contribute to our defense not able to stop the run.. not bc of Dak.

My point, it’s typical that people here want to trash Dak without much consideration of what he’s done, how he’s improving, and where Dallas would be without him. Thankfully, he was available after Romo went down/retired. I’m thankful that we have a guy that is willing to put it all on the line for his team. He may not be the proto pocket QB, but those are far, few, and between in today’s NFL and/or College. More and more we’re seeing QBs like Dak enter the league.. it’s a different era. If someone just can’t stand Daks play regardless of the playoff wins, respect of teammates, stats, etc.. well, I suggest to just hold on and see what he can do this year. As that’s all we as fans can do anyway. In the mean time, I will root for he’s continued improvements and successes.

It's possible. Teams get pretty desperate when it comes to finding a quality quarterback. He's young and still developing, but has led his team to the playoffs twice and put up pretty good numbers overall. I just think if I'm a GM, I'm concerned about spending that much on a QB who has been up and down. A lot more goes into winning than just the QB play, so if I'm spending two or three first-rounders, I want to make absolutely sure that the player I'm acquiring is a franchise QB.

Based on Stephen's comments, it appears that Dallas feels certain that he is, so other teams might feel the same way. However, if they feel like I do, I don't think I'd be willing to invest multiple first-rounders in him yet. Maybe that's short-sighted, but right now based on what I've seen over three seasons, I just don't feel I'd be willing to spend more than a mid-first because I don't know if I'm getting the Dak of 2106 or the Dak of 2017, both of which we saw in 2018.
Up and down years? Dak has never had a losing season despite losing players around him and position changes.

Also what comments did Stephen make? You talking about the hometown discount so he can surround him with talent.........he would be a fool to say, we are going to pay Dak as much money as we can and forget the rest of the roster, especially when they are getting ready for negotiations. Every team wants to pay players as little as possible so they can get more talent. Has nothing to do if they think Dak can play or not. Just look at what they did with Lawrence for example and ended up giving him 21.5 average

It seems to me folks need to figure out who was behind the Offensive struggles.

For several years, people have been complaining ab how vanilla Scott Linehans Offense was and how he was holding our Offense back. Now that he’s gone, I suppose Dak will be the target. Although, stats would suggest that Dak is on par with most young QBs of the past.

Could the offense struggles have anything to do with Linehan play calls, WR talent, deterioration of OL, Zekes suspension, a safety-net TE, etc...?

More facts: Dak statistically played better when he was able to call his own plays. He compares favorably to all QBs in the 4th Q.. see how he compared to Romo.

https://www.___GET_REAL_URL___/s/ww...d-tony-romo-is-very-interesting-bill-parcells

I want to see how Dak performs this year without Linehan. Add the fact that Cooper and Dak are forming a chemistry like that of Romo/Dez or Aikman/Irving

https://www.___GET_REAL_URL___/s/to...ged-the-call-on-dallas-biggest-touchdown/amp/

“It’s hardly a ringing endorsement of Linehan’s acumen that his top receiver is saying out loud to anyone who will listen that he has to bail one of his coaches out of a schism born of predictability, but the connection between Prescott and Cooper is ertainly a positive mitigating factor.”
I'm looking forward to this year as well, mainly because I don't believe Dak is going to look different and blame will shift to someone else once again. I hope I'm wrong, for the sake of our immediate future.

That's yet another scary part to this equation. And I can't help but to think it plays some measure of a role in the Jones' seeming rush to get a deal done quickly. They don't trust themselves either and much prefer getting a deal done so they can show the league that 'they got theirs in the fourth round.'
Good point I Just think of the 2015 season and QB's they brought in and Jerry's praise as well as Johnny football.

That is such a non-sequitor

Having a good to great QB is a requirement in the NFL

I guess PManning, RWilson, TBrady, ARodgers, DBrees, Big Ben teams never made the playoffs after they got paid???

The idea of paying the QB means no one else can be any good or get paid is ridiculous.... the Cap is 188m plus rollover or 200m in our case... we can carry a 20m cap hit for the QB right now
Lol @ comparing Dak to any of those QBs. All HOFers on that list

Dak belongs with the likes of Cousins, Dalton, Cam Newton, and Stafford.

None of them made the playoffs last season...

If Dak dont look different thats 4 straight winning seasons, 3 NFC east crowns and 2 playoff wins which ties Romo in only 4 years........you're wrong so your hope came true

Also 3 probowls in 4 years

Wait a minute...

You think the offensive line has given as much time to pass without pressure the last two years, than they did in 2016? That is what you are claiming? Trying to be clear.
I'm not claiming anything. I'm stating a fact and you guys are so hellbent on blaming everyone but Dak you refuse to believe Dak could have the issues he did despite having top protection compared to the rest of the league.

He's always had top 10 best average time to throw, always in the 2.8-2.88 second range.

https://nextgenstats.nfl.com/stats/passing/2016/all

Sort by TT and select year. It's just funny seeing certain QBs at the bottom that do much better. And when we want to compare qbs like Carr who is near the bottom every year can you imagine if Dak had the same time? Wow our pass offense might just drop to last. Lol

Lol seriously? Stop with the "QB only wins the game" mindset.

For one Dak made the playoffs and won so no he isn't the same as those guys. Another thing Dak is only 1 of 3 players to start their career 3 straight years with at least 22 passing TDs.......The other two are Luck and Peyton Manning. If you add in his rushing TDs he is the only QB ever to have 22 Passing TDs and 5 rushing TDs to start their career 3 seasons straight.

Y'all keep saying Dak isn't those QBs but their careers are either done or almost done and comparing a 3 year QB to them is silly. What you should be comparing is their first 3 years compared to Dak but y'all don't want to do that because Dak stats compare or even better in some categories.

Where did i say that at all.......QBs touch the ball more than any other player. They get the most credit for the wins and most of the blame with losses. Dak took over a team tray was 4-12 and hasn't had a losing season ever so since you want to play that game, Dak deserves more credit for those wins then any player

You have a opinion you post here often as many others do, point was there is no clear consensuses anywhere of what Dak is as a QB from talking heads to this board.
Stephen thinks otherwise.

After Stephan comments about Dak needing to sign team friendly deal and Dak on record as saying there will be no discount...an impasse is coming. Rather than get into issue of is Dak good or not, what could Cowboy get in trade if long term deal can't be agreed upon.

Note:
Denver received TWO 1st & 3rd for Jay Cutler
Cincy received 1st & 2nd for Carson Palmer
Eagles received 1st & 4th round pick for Sam Bradford.

If your Stephan, what would you need back in trade?

Note: this is not to get into large debate about if Dallas should or shouldn't do this but merely an exercise in what you think his current trade value is.
at this point a 6th or 7th would be nice :muttley:

Why? Because it's an undeniable fact and an "inconvenient truth"?

Having a good to great QB is a requirement in the NFL

I guess PManning, RWilson, TBrady, ARodgers, DBrees, Big Ben teams never made the playoffs after they got paid???

Go back to the days when those quarterbacks "got paid". Were they in fact taking up 17% of the team's total cap like guys like Rodgers are set to?

The idea of paying the QB means no one else can be any good or get paid is ridiculous.... the Cap is 188m plus rollover or 200m in our case... we can carry a 20m cap hit for the QB right now

Sure, because we're not paying any of the other several guys in line for deals.

All of those QBs have Super Bowl rings. Like I said, Dak is nowhere near those QBs

Their actions show otherwise. Even the Lawrence deal took the threat of delayed surgery before it got done.

And I also see none of the other teams with quarterbacks in the same draft class rushing to sign new deals for Goff or Wentz.

You are wrong about that. Dak has shown he can go over 300 yards and even over 400 yards. Of course teams would love to give up a second for a franchise QB making pennies right now and is the second most winning QB only to Brady but he will bring much more than that. 2 to 3 first rounders is more close.
how many times? I can show you that Mark Rypien won a superbowl and had an outstanding outing....what does that make him?
