Dallas will not extend Jaylon before his restricted year. Missed entire 2016 and still recovering in 2017. He basically has given Dallas 1 year of production they were banking on when drafted.
more like 1 1/2 out of 2 years....... year one didn't count

we made LCollins whole and we will take care of JSmith.... he put in the work and deserves it ...... sitting back and saying "we got a steal because of your injury" is not a good look

After his 5th year deal I may just watch EE walk out the door. To me Dak, Jaylon, BJ and Cooper are more important and maybe LC too. It is just to easy to draft RBs and with the money tied in this O-line I should be able to draft a 1200 yard back in the 3rd round.
There are far more QBs of Dak's quality than there are RBs of Zeke's.

Zeke is responsible for Dak's success, and it's not as easy as you think to just get a 1200yd back. Not to mention that the OL is not what it used to be.
We had a top 10 O line last year and that was without Fred. I’ve seen so many off based comments about the O line because it’s not 2016 which was arguably the best O line in the league. This O line is much better than people give them credit for.

And just as Zeke is responsible for Daks success (which I don’t completely buy) the O line is absolutely responsible for Zeke’s success.

The offensive line was fine. Dak can't handle pressure, and lacks awareness to slide and find temporary shelter to make throws. Concern (panic or the glitch) over pressure too often trumps ability to get through progressions. Ala from the Atlanta game to half way though last year.
Must speed up the pace of his reads. Footwork is a mess.

DAL officially exercised the 9.1m option for 2020

It doesn't become guaranteed until next March but it keeps Zeke under contract for the next 2 years

It allows them to move on to BJones or JSmith or LCollins

It leaves DAL with over 85m in Cap Space next year before any rollover or cuts

This means what some had thought. That a zeke extension won’t be broached for another two years.

I do not feel that anyone still available with the 4th pick in 2016 could have singularly helped this team as much as has Ezekiel Elliott.

jaylon Smith will be a restricted free agent that just means we have to put a tender on him that's the same as a 5th year option.

It brings his rookie deal to 5yr/35m
zeke being a top 5 pick was good for both parties

Cowboys don't have to break the bank for all-pro talent but at the same time Zeke's rookie deal will have him third in the entire NFL for running back total guaranteed and number one in the NFL for fully guaranteed.

A lot of running backs get pissed because they get jipped on their rookie deals but in zekes case he's being paid top 3 money even three years after the deal was signed

I think the plan was always to put the 5th year option on him and then pay him next year in the last year of his contract that's just how we do business.

the difference is Zeke is easily the best running back in the NFL and we have a first-round pick invested in him but you're right he could ask for too much but I think they'll come to terms pretty easily.

Got to disagree with that 100%

How? Zeke is top 3 (meaning there are only 3 in existence - 5 if you want to be conservative). Dak is optimistically top 15.

Unless someone wants to argue Dak is top 5 or better, it's basic math.

Now, QB is a more challenging position, and so there are more "okay" backs that can be found more easily than decent QBs, but Zeke is not in that category.

That's not really true but even if it was, what does that have to do with re-signing him?

FYI - He was drafted in 2016. He played in all 16 games in 2017 and 2018.

Wow seems premature but I’m not really a numbers guy. Just for perspective, what is Zeke making for 2019 and what is the value of his entire 5 year contract?
They have to exercise the option 16 months prior to the start of the "option" season (i.e. They have to pick up the option before May 2019 for Zeke to play under the option in 2020.

I think someone might poach JSmith on a 1st Round Tender of 4.5m

I might try a short 2 year extension to get thru the CBA and lets him 'secure the bag" after missing out on the Draft
They have the right to match any offers.

Poison pills were banned which means a team would have to believe the Cowboys wouldn't match. That means the other team is over paying Zeke with the offer.

Good GMs likely wouldn't waste their time because they have to over pay or the Cowboys would match unless the Cowboys know something that other teams don't.

If a naive GM did it, that likely means he is the GM of a bad team which means the 1st round pick would be an early one. The Cowboys would likely take the pick in that situation.

Easily? Lol, that’s good stuff. And please, please use “he won the rushing record 2 out of 3 years” reasoning. Top 5, probably even top 3 but “easily the best” is a joke.

Why push the issue and pay 15m when you can pay 9m on an extension this year?

Someone will make an offer for JSmith..... I would if he was on another team

He is better than any rookie LB coming out and he is still 23 years old

Anyone else anxious to see where the Cowboys are at after new deals for Dak, Cooper, Elliott, Jones, Jaylon, Collins.....

If you mean La'el, I don't see him getting a long-term at all and Stephen just confirmed Jaylon they will tender Jaylon.
