Excited about McGovern + C.Williams

It likely was not premeditated, but I’m excited about a future OL that goes T Smith, McGovern, T Fred, Z Martin, C Williams. I believe a Kellen Moore-led offense will feature a lot of traditional and bubble screens. Saw it a bunch here in Boise for BSU. I think Connor Williams’ athleticism fits well in that scheme. He is great at moving to the second level. We lose a little of Lael’s power, but that fit better with a Linehan-led power run offense. Can’t you just see a 4 wide with Cobb and Pollard at matching slots and defense having to defend a bubble screen to either, and Connor pulling out to block that DB on his side? Much smoother than Lael IMO. Oh yeah, and we probably save $10M and get a 3-4 comp pick when Lael leaves. McGovern pick was a stroke of genius IMO. We’ll see.

I gotta see what Conner is this year as a player. I want how much stronger he has gotten. I think people oversold themselves on him last year. He was excellent prospect but what it was well known he needed strength to reach his potential. I think alot of us (myself included) sold themselves on him being more of an immediate impact player than we should have expected

I'm more content with the depth DAL has on the OL than just McGovern or CWill.
Smith
Collins
Martin
Fredrick
Williams
McGovern
Looney
Fleming
Sua'Filo
That's 9 guys who can start and you feel like the offense isn't comprised much. In the East w/ all these great defensive fronts the Cowboys are set up for a few years. I truly thought CWill would be better at OT and with the CMc pick this group has an infusion of young talent. Look forward to them continuing to draft OL next draft.

I believe you are dead on the money.

I've wanted Williams at tackle, I really think he can excel there.

With this depth on the OL, it is the least position group to be concerned with. Actually no concerns.
I feel the same about the WR group for the most part.
DL seems like a deep group also, though we will need to see them perform. As many think this every year, only to turn out it is not as good as we wanted or thought. But on paper it is deep.
RB on paper now looks good.

Secondary, but because of the S and Jones and his hip surgery recovery. May still be an issue, and TE can go either way, depends if Witten still has it, and if Jarwin and Schultz will be allowed to play and improve.
LB still a strength too.

This is a pretty big assumption.

And it's not like either guy is a better athlete than La'El.

I hope McGovern can eventually become a solid starter for us.

I don’t think the team has any intention on resigning Lael Collins unless it came at a supreme discount from what he’s likely going to receive on the open market after this season.

It was a prudent move by the team. I’d like to see the team give Lael and Williams a shot to compete at camp.
This 100% let Williams and Lael battle at RT and let Mcgovern battle for LG

I like the pick and the duo.
IMO I think Mcgovern goes outside to RT in 2020 when Collins walks. Gives him a full year + to get into "NFL shape" and has the chance to go up against D-Law for 2 TC to get a taste of the NFL.

There is another report that says they probably won't move Williams this year. They want him to continue to get stronger and bigger and hopefully have some success playing between Smith and Frederick in 2019. Then they "might" move him to RT in 2020 if Collins isn't back.

Personally, I can't see how Collins is back in 2020, especially if they plan on paying Dak, Elliott, Smith, etc. Collins, despite being a mediocre RT, is going to get a fairly decent contract next offseason.

Thoughts anyone?

My thoughts are pretty much like everyone's on here. I hope we get a look at C Will at RT in TC this year but for 2019 I see C Will at LG. I think Collins will be too expensive to sign in 2020 and it makes sense that we could see a completely new right side of the O-line in 2020. I liked the C McG pick a lot

I think they need to move Williams to RT right away. He doesn't need to get bigger and stronger to play there. His feet are his best attribute (and really the only reason he might be able to play RT) so I don't think you want to make him heavier and slower.

I also think we need to know NOW whether we think he can handle RT. There are guys like Bob Sturm who are adamant he's not a RT in the NFL. If not, we need to consider further back-up plans for La'el's certain departure after next year, including the possibility moving Martin to RT.

I don't know if exactly your vision of how the players will be situated along the O-line is what the Cowboys have set in their minds, but that would be one of the possible scenarios I'm sure the Cowboys considered when taking McGovern. What we can be sure was premeditated was creating options and depth.

Had he stayed at OT where he was used to it probably wouldn't have been as big an issue, but in the interior line he was undersized, plus getting used to a new position. He should only get better.

I've read that C Will's arms need to lengthen a bit to play tackle. Suggest tying between to ponies and stretchin him a bit. 3/4" could make all the difference:laugh:

Like the Martin pick, I don't think it was genius, it just fell in our lap. But what a gift!

The McGovern pick gives us power at LG, and lets Williams move to his more natural position, where his feet are his asset, and his lack of power is not a liability. And lets us make that move this year.

I like multiple run threats on the field with Zeke. Make the defense key on Zeke less, or pay for keying on him so much.

Austin, Pollard, Cobb, Olawale. It really *looks* like they've purposefully taken personnel to do this. But I thought so last year too. I've got a theory that this was the plan for much of the staff last year, but Linehan wasn't on board and wouldn't play along, and that's one of the many reasons he's gone.
