If I'm interpreting everything from Over The Cap correctly, we still could get up to 3 compensatory picks in next year's draft (although more likely it's only 1). Right now it's projected that we won't receive any because the Cole Beasley, Damien Wilson and Geoff Swaim free agent deals were cancelled out by the Randall Cobb, Christian Covington and George Iloka signings. But, if any of these players are released before week 10 of the 2020 season (like we did with Deonte Thompson last year), the cancellations are null and void. Both Wilson and Swaim signed for around $2.8mm per year, which would put them at the high end of the round 7 comp picks, and Beasley got $7.2mm per year which would put him on the border between a 5th and 6th.
The only way I see Cobb being cut is because of injury, and even though Iloka was signed to basically a vet minimum contract, we don't have much behind him unless our 6th rounder Donovan Wilson really steps up quick. Covington on the other hand, we have a ton of depth on the defensive line including a few talented UDFA's, so unless he comes in and has an out-of-nowhere effect like Antwaun Woods had last year, I think I'd be surprised if he was long for the roster.
It'd be nice to pick up at least one additional 7th, if not two, to make up for the 6th rounder we gave up for Robert Quinn. I'm not 100% sure I have all the details about how compensatory picks work nailed down, but I *think* all this is accurate. The 2021 draft will probably be compensatory pick heaven considering how many free agents we have next year, and that should make Cowboys fans very happy given how young our team is overall and how well the front office has continued to draft in recent years.
