I agree. There were over 4 minutes left in the game and I have no doubt that Rodgers would have gotten the Packers in field goal range to win, or maybe even a TD. Our best hope was to have Dez ruled down at the one and burn at least some time before we scored. And honestly, even if the catch were upheld, we've left too much time. It's almost better if he just goes down and we make them burn timeouts while we pound it into the endzone.
That is what I thought at the time, dez was thinking personal glory of a td for him.Montana to Clark is still my most painful Cowboys memory
The saddest thing about the Dez"no catch" is he could've secured that ball for a certain catch instead of shifting the ball to the other hand to stretch for the end zone
I'm not reading this whole thread but does anyone see the ball hit the ground at any point. I've watched it several times and imo it's not clear that it did.
On the Dez play? Of course it did - that's when it popped up out of his hands. He had already possessed it before lunging, though.
Just a stupid rule.
I have to disagree with everything written here. You have to try for a touchdown every chance you get. Field goals are not guaranteed, nor is hammering the ball in goal line each down and hoping you get it in. Remember, this is the 2010's we're in and not the 1950's ( although there were teams that would sling it even back then ).That is what I thought at the time, dez was thinking personal glory of a td for him.
And he isnt that bright, on 4th down the smart play is just to make the catch like you say, dont worry about anything else.
Also they only needed 1 yard, they could have ran , or beasely was open too, so Romo made a bad decision to throw it up on a risky pass.
Also what they needed was just a couple of yds and slowly drive it in for td, then rodgers has no time to score .
I also blame poor coaching , as they were not properly prepared for that scenario, score too quick and rodgers still beats you.
Garrett called a timeout, when witten was short of first down, but ref called it a first. I saw it was short, and was thinking
snap it quick and hand off to murray, but dumb dumb JG calls a TO lol then they looked at it and made it 4th and 1.
On the Murray fumble, people ignore several things,
1. Martin was the OL that peppers made a fool of to get to murray , had he been blocked better he would never get to murray.
2.Murray had a broken hand, so should he have even been playing? what if they had went to Randal??
3.it wasnt a fumble, it was a strip from behind, Murray wasn't expecting anything from behind.
4.as with all 6 or 7 of Murrays fumbles that year, some were strips not fumbles, none were recovered by another cowboy player
Which kinda suggest they didnt practice recovering their own fumbles and were not very good at it. I remember one where 2 cowboys had clear shot
at the ball but a Commander db comes in and gets it.
5. Defense wasnt great, but they were not bad either, GB and rodgers were just good, and they moved the ball on other teams too, thats
why they were in the playoffs too lol. Also marinelli and his zone defense just doesnt work good against rodgers, same thing in 2016.
So bad coaching set them up to fail and they did. but GB was pretty good that year, and should have went to sb, but they had coaching
flaws next game with seattle.

The league had to endure 3 years of "upright long enough to become a runner" from 2015-17, and it was all because they reversed the call on this play and then changed the rule to try to justify their overturn. The Dez catch, if it had been upheld, was destined to be a historic moment that saw frequent replay. If Dallas wins, Dez is another Dwight Clark. If Dallas loses, we get a last minute, game winning drive, and Aaron Rodgers is Joe Montana.
Instead, we get neither and years of controversy regarding what qualities as a catch, and the competitive legitimacy of the sport is challenged.
In 2014, the rule was as it is today -- that you could complete the catch process and become a runner without having to be upright. The call on the field was correctly based on this rule.Just a stupid rule.
I was 12 when GD Jackie Smith dropped a sure TD in the end zone against the Steelers in the SB. *^%#.
Straw that broke camels back for me after that game.He freaking caught it! Damn, that still pisses me off. I lost my voice that day.

Painful game end. Thought we had Montana sacked.Montana to Clark is still my most painful Cowboys memory

Dez did not catch the ball. Will let you all know if he catches it this time.
About 9 minutes left in the 1st Quarter.
The league still should have gotten it right. The fact is, we’ll never know. We saw the team stop Drew Brees in a very similar situation last season. Or Rodgers might have scored quickly and given the ball back to Romo with a little bit of time left and some timeouts.
It’s academic, what might have happened. The problem of having officials determining the outcome of a post-season game with a bad call they didn’t have to make and didn’t get right.
The weird Unsportsmanlike Conduct call on Butler that killed a home drive early in 2016 actually bugs me more than the Dez catch call. And the blown PI v the Saints last year is much worse than both. It’s a huge issue for the league. They’re advancing the wrong teams to the championship games on obvious mistakes.

Sorry, but the league did get it right with the rules at the time. The "Going to the Ground Rule" took precedence over regular catch rules which is why the relaxing of that GTG rule NOW makes the Dez play a legal catch (AND Calvin Johnson's. AND Jesse James').
Agree to disagree on it. Not worth the back and forth on it so many years after it happened, but that was a blown call by any reasonable interpretation of the review rules at the time as far as I'm concerned.
