Yeah, really not all that bad. I think Hurns will add more than what people think. He is a good player, just not to the usuals liking.
I wish Crawford was more productive than he is, but he also does a lot to help other players that do not show up in the stats. The dirty work.

I like Hurns, but I thought with Beasley leaving that he would be the slot receiver this season. With us bringing in Cobb, we've essentially relegated him to fourth receiver, which is a position that also usually provides some special teams play. I think he's a good locker room presence and a good fallback in case on injury, but Hurns is simply getting paid too much for the role he's expected to play ... and I expect him to either take a pay cut or be cut if all of the receivers stay healthy.

I've always liked Crawford more than many on this board. He's that player you want to upgrade with a stud, but he ends up getting a lot of snaps at end and 3-tech because he's above average, which has mostly been better than our other options, such as Charlton. When we gave him this contract, we thought that he could be a stud 3-tech, but he's just not on that level. I'm not interested in doing anything about his deal, though, until someone cheaper proves to at least be on his level. He's a good player, and we need those until we find great ones.

If our receivers look good in camp and without injury, Hurns could be cut or dealt.

I certainly agree with the cut part, but I don't see anybody touching that current contract, much less trading for it.

If Crawford is our worst contract, we're in better shape than most. Some people act like he gives you nothing, when that is far from the case. I can understand the argument that he's not worth that money, but I think this is the first year his cap hit and his production aren't at least in the same ballpark. And if the young guys/bargain bin FAs signed this off-season show enough in TC and preseason, he could be cut anyway. No point in doing so now. There's no guarantee Tank is ready to start the season so Crawford is needed depth until proven otherwise.

I think Hurns is a worse contract. But we have the luxury of waiting until the end of the preseason to decide if he's worth keeping. My guess is we'd have to have some injuries for him to stick.

I agree. it probably comes down to the play of Wilson, Devin Smith and the two rookies (Guyton, Jon'Vea Johnson).

We've got three locks Cooper, Gallup and Cobb. Austin and Brown are both niche players who contribute on special teams. Austin is probably closer to a lock for his role as punt returner/jet sweeper than Brown, but I don't know if Hurns has an edge on either of them as a more polished receiver who don't play special teams. If not, then he's got to offer more than our second-year draft pick, those two speedy rookies and Smith, a former second-rounder who has been sidelined by injury issues. As a fifth or sixth receiver, that's going to be hard for him to do. You keep someone who flashes potential over a veteran who is only going to get 5 or so snaps per game.

We've also got Reggie Davis and Lance Lenoir, but I'll be surprised if either of them wins a roster spot over our other choices.

I could see Brown having a leg up over Austin just because Cobb/Pollard might make him expendable, whereas Brown is the best blocking WR on the team and he fits a different niche (also plays special teams). It wouldn't shock me if they kept Brown and cut both Hurns and Austin. Although the fool's gold of what Austin "might" provide could cloud judgment - never mind that nobody has unlocked that potential yet.

I read something back in February or March that they may approach Hurns around TC time to restructure his contract for less.

He's the 40th highest paid DL. Players around his pay has similar production. Some better, some worst. Not all those around his pay can olay inside and outside. Not all this players are captains and team leaders.

Jack Crawford had better production. At a cost of just $3 million. That's Tyrone's comp.

Hurns, unless there is a prominent injury, is but a #3 or #4 receiver on the Cowboys, at present.

For what it's worth, "fool's gold", was having a career year last season before his injury, despite how little the creatively-challenged Scott Linehan bothered using him.

I just wonder how injury might factor into the contracts of Hurns and Crawford? Everyone says "they can cut them" down the line, but what if either or both get hurt? Is their contract then guaranteed and the team stuck with it?

Crawford and Hurns might not even make the team. If a WR or DL step up in camp, I would not be surprised if the Cowboys go with the youth and smaller contract. Good position to be in for the Cowboys. Basically, Crawford and Hurns are an insurance policy.

Assuming no injuries, DL looks to be deep this year. Same with WR.

Very true. Along with the offensive line, those position groups look very deep. Deeper than I can remember in quite some time. And I'm eager to see if the cornerback group can approach that.

If he was having a career year last season before his injury, that almost proves my point.

as a 10.1 cap hit he ranks high up there for DT's which he is. i believe top 15 with cheapy choppy production. You've been talking to nightman to long
