Comparing NFL QBs pay, reg season and playoff success

So, we’re crediting Dak for our wins last 3 years?

I understand our options are limited but that’s only because we have chosen not to bring in anyone else.

We’ve already seen what we have without Elite talent around him but yet we still want to pay him like he’s an upper echelon QB?

I don’t have an issue signing Dak. But I’m not sure what Daks options are otherwise. Are lower tier teams going to be in line for a QB that needs a league leading RB, WR1 and Pro Bowl OL to be 22nd ranked passing offense ?

I’m not really sure why we don’t think we can sign Dak for less and shorter term and be prepared to step up if he surpassed his current talent level or takes us deeper.

And continue looking to shore up a backup QB in the event he’s needed. It’s not like we couldn’t use our available sources and top picks in upcoming drafts without mortgaging the ranch.
You realize 2 people have to agree on a contract

Of course.

Does anyone know if we’ve even attempted to offer a less than market contract for a less than upper echelon QB?

Stephen did state hed like to see a team friendly deal which to me means less than market value.

I’m not arguing they aren’t going to sign him. That doesn’t mean we have to agree with the deal he signs nor the potential effects.

It’s not about whether we like him or not. It’s not personal with me. Strictly business...

And I raised some valid questions you ignored.
I didn’t ignore those q’s Greggo. I’m just choosing not to engage. No disrespect intended my friend. I know where you stand and I respect your views. I just disagree. Maybe I’m just getting tired in my old age. For sure I’m more selective about what I choose to engage with.

Pretty sure the FO already know what they are gonna pay Dak.

It will be an amount that has nothing to do with what any of us say on any of these many threads.

I don't really think the poster's here really think they are going to have an influence on how much Dak gets paid.

It's an easy choice when your wife is worth $400 million.
Plus I imagine Brady is probably worth $150-200 million on his own. He wouldn't be as understanding if he were in Dak's shoes without a lot of money in the bank and looking for his first big contract.

I understand but you act like because we're going to sign him that we should all accept without discussion?

Should I just place my blinders on and follow along?

We don’t know that. Perhaps he is actually more concerned about winning and he knows the deal. Plus knows his longevity and success will generate more in the long run.

Of course not but hopefully we’re still allowed to voice our concerns .

Or would we rather this forum just post thoughts and everyone just listen and follow along?

This thought that since signing Dak is evitable we should all accept and get on board blows me away.

Like it or not, the QB and HC get the W/L's attached to their name. Only the pitcher in baseball gets that.

Here's what I think about the QB and the HC. This league is so starved for both of those that the market is driven by demand/supply and you only have to look at SF paying their unproven QB 27.5M and Cousins getting 28M to know the market is mashugana. Ya like that? I am not Jewish but I really like some of their words. Schmuck is another fav.

There are very few incentive laden contracts and even fewer at the most prized position and hardest to fill in the sport. This is not what an owner wants to do but what he has to do. They built their own Frankenstein with their rules and now he's turned on them.

Booger will say all the right things about this deal to instill confidence in the QB and franchise but he's not stupid. He will pay Prescott 30M because he has to, not because he wants to. With his penchant for promotion, think he doesn't covet a guy like Tua or Lawrence, just as he did Manziel. But Dak's 2nd in jersey sales and you can bet he's aware of that.

Your last paragraph is enough to rise up and holler about. I agree and why I raise hell about it.

And it’s obviously agenda driven if fans credit Dak for the wins in a supportive narrative but not use it for Garrett.

And when you look at the vet QBs getting big pay days, how many of them are ever going do much? Less than half.

As you stated Coach, if you are a young QB and can show NFL executives that you can stay healthy, look good at times, and even win a few games, you will be massively compensated.

For everyone screaming “Dak’s not the guy”, the follow up is, “Well who’s out there that’s better that we can acquire through the draft or FA?” We all know that Drafting a 21 year old college QB as the guaranteed next Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers is a back alley crap shoot. Sure a guy like Tua or Kyler Murray looks awesome against college competition. But as we’ve seen a 100 times, that doesn’t always translate.

Whether we like it or not, the QB market is set. It is what it is. We have found a good (not great) QB who is still only 25, has started 51 straight games, won 2 divisional titles in 3 years, and probably has some real upside. That’s not bad in today’s NFL.

I suppose it's true I can't say that with absolute certainty, but it's a bet I would be willing to take. I'll bet that $12 million/year contract extension he signed in 2005 or that $18 MM/year extension in 2010 weren't much, if any, below market value at that time. It's a lot easier to be selfless once a player's financial future is already set.

We raise hell about the game and to every one of them the game is all business.

I look at today's NFL as akin to watching Apple and Microsoft square off in a company softball game.

I believe he did because he placed a higher premium on winning and extending his legacy than optimizing his contract for a few years.

I hope Cowboys fans notice how many NFL teams throw big amounts of cash at guys that have done less than Dak. Derek Carr? Kirk Cousins? Jimmy Garoppolo? The Bucs are paying Jameis Winston over 20 mil a year and he’s never even had a winning season.
thanks for the info bob, I had brought up this same thing in another thread, that dak whatever he is , has done better than other guys making in the area
of 25 mil.
Last season helped, as he did win a playoff game, something the others havent done, and some havent even made the playoffs, like cousins, mariota , and
garapalo.
The win streak in 2nd part of season, getting in playoffs, and winning a game, really helped Dak with getting a new and good contract.
The cooper trade really saved him.

I would agree that business is a huge aspect of it, but I don't believe for a minute that many players don't have a passion for the game. Those that do become Warren Sapp, and those that don't become David Irving. The league is much too competitive for a player to keep up if he doesn't have something pushing him besides a paycheck.

Roethlisberger has two championships, even though he struggled mightily in Super Bowl XL (Antwaan Randle El actually threw the best pass of the game).

Other than that, thanks for your time. Good info.

I believe he did because he placed a higher premium on winning and extending his legacy than optimizing his contract for a few years.

I believe once he signed the big contracts he was willing to restructure them at times to help out, just as Romo did and other QBs have done, and I would bet Dak will do the same once he gets the big contract. Again, it's a lot easier to work with the team when there is already considerable money in the bank than it is before the money is there.

Some funny stats from the QB pay numbers....
  • Jimmy G has won a whopping 8 games as a starter. That means he has been paid be over $3 mil per win.
  • Kirk Cousins is the 5th highest paid QB yet has had only one winning season and never won a single playoff game.
  • Eli M is only two games above .500 as a starter in reg season
  • Nick Foles has less reg season wins than Dak.
Eli had a great playoff record, during SB runs, and he shined in the playoffs those years. and he won 2 SB's for what today is low pay.
Foles, your reaching there bob. he has more playoff wins and a SB win which trumps whatever he did in reg season

Bullet, when I think of Dak Prescott, he's not my first choice but he is a choice I can accept and understand.

And the difference between Brady and Rodgers or Brees or Rothliesberger or Rivers is that his owner builds around him. Many think this "ya gotta build a team around him" is a negative and I think just the opposite. The perception of a QB that needs more help is a positive one for me. We saw how they handled Romo and then even admitted they were laying too much on him.

There teams with these Teir 1's, except for the ultimate exception in the league, how are they doing? And the more power given to a Tier 1 QB, the more a team has to make him happy, just look at GB and PIT for that.

The best part of our QB is that he fully understands his role. He knows he's not expected to throw for 300 and 3 scores every game and while he is the most important element on the team, he understands team just as he did at Miss St. Guys like Cutler and George with the great arms never got that. Eli and Flacco got it.
