Comparing NFL QBs pay, reg season and playoff success

Roethlisberger has two championships, even though he struggled mightily in Super Bowl XL (Antwaan Randle El actually threw the best pass of the game).

Other than that, thanks for your time. Good info.
You’re right. Thank you for the correction on Big Ben.

It's an easier choice when you circumvent the cap by opening up your tb12 training facility a 3 minute walk away from the patriots facility.

Any NFL QB could work out something like that. Marrying a supermodel worth $400 million is trickier.

Whats the hurry? He's under contract. We dont even know who'll be HC in 2020 (Garrett out of contract).

You'd want to be a complete bonehead of a GM to sign a QB before you know who will be coaching and what type of QB they prefer.

The issue isn’t about hurrying. Believe it or not, the issue of negotiating now is for the purpose of saving money in the long run. Dak isn’t going to be cheaper next year. QB salaries are not trending down. If you can get a deal done now before his current deal is up, you will probably save between $3 and $5 million a year. That’s why they are doing it now.

Yep, at first I said wait and keep the options open but those options do not look good. Sometimes they've just got to make the move to move forward.

And I am exactly where I was with Romo with Dak, neither a Dakster or a Dakater, in that middle ground area where he's neither as bad or good as they say.

And one thing about him that just keep hanging around besides his winning %. Dak is like a tick. He can't win the job in high school, college or the NFL and is actually the 3rd stringer but when he gets the job, he's dug in. It is as if he doesn't work hard enough to get but saves that for keeping it.

I learned quite a bit about his relationship with his Mom and hers with his coaches and among the things she taught her son was determination, self belief with the difference in arrogance and confidence as good measure.

Of course and I agree. Unfortunately it’s going to limit us down the road unless Dak is eventually able to carry us without as much Elite support.

BTW... I do appreciate the info you provided in OP. It clearly represents where we should be paying Dak which is with those earning about 20 mil a year.

I’d like to see Dak turn down a 60-70 million 3 year deal before I’d counter offer.

Why can’t we be as tough as we were with Murray and Dez?

Because those are different positions. Negotiations for WR and RB are completely different situations than for a QB.

Comparing Dak to most guys on this list making above $20 million per year, he will definitely get paid market value. And if Dallas chose not to pay him, the line would immediately form with other teams wanting to get him.

Like it or not, Dak’s name is about to be added to this list and it will certainly be in the range of $25-32 million.

I agree he will get paid, but allow me to nitpick a bit. What is this mythical line you are referring to? Are there other teams besides the 31 other NFL teams lining up? Are you including CFL teams? Let me ask your opinion on something. How many teams that already have and are happy with their starting QB will line up to pay Dak market value? The Cards? The Steelers? What about the Patriots? It was a rhetorical question because we all know the answer. None.

Like I said before I know he's going to get paid. But let's not pretend there would be a log jam at his locker waiting to sign him. There are maybe 1 or 2 teams that might be interested besides Dallas. Go down the list yourself.

the arguments and questions should be raised.

Letting status quo going unchecked is relinquishing a basic instinct and right we have to voice concerns.
This is what everyone should do concerning our govt's from local up to national level.

Teams that would be interested in Dak? Almost all the ones that don’t have someone already on a long deal or a team that has a good QB near retirement or one they are unsatisfied with. So somewhere between 10 and 15 teams. If you want to go team by team, that’s fine. I’m not going to do that work, lol.

Appreciate your time and effort. Good post.

I would do backflips If the cowboys can get Dak for 25 mill. That would be a deal.

I think 30 is probably more realistic.
Brady surely has chosen winning (and status from that) over money. I think you are probably right about Dak getting 30 -- just in cap adjusted dollars he should make more than some of those guys near the top. To be fair I believe many of those teams overpaid, but it seems like almost everybody does.

Tough is tough

Why should we surrender just cause it’s QB?

Because it's the hardest position in pro sports to fill. Dak Prescott is not perfect, but the Cowboys have been consistent winners since he took over and there's still room for Dak to get even better.

Re-signing Dak gives the Cowboys stability and peace of mind for the next several seasons and they can continue to build the offense around him.

And his contract will not compare to the Kirk Cousins deal; because Cousins always found a way to lose in Washington and the Vikings chose to ignore it. While it's true wins and losses are a team thing and not an individual accomplishment; just look back at 2015. Dak Prescott was the key difference between that team and the Cowboys of the past three years; with all due respect to Zeke.

Jets, Patriots, Bills, Dolphins.. Do you think any of these teams would be interested in Dak? I don't see any.

Titans, Colts, Ravens, Texans. Maybe the Titans? If they think Dak is a huge upgrade, neither are elite.

Bengals, Browns, Steelers, Ravens. Just the Bengals for now.

Chiefs, Chargers, Raiders, Broncos. I don't know what they plan to do with Rivers. If they sign him again, which I believe will happen, they're out. Raiders look like they are keeping Carr since his deal isn't too expensive now. Broncos drafted Drew Lock.

Eagles, Giants, Commanders. We can safely say no for any of these teams.

Bears Packers, Vikings, Lions. Same goes for this group.

Bucs, Saints, Falcons, Panthers. I put the Bucs in the same category with the Titans. Are the Saints moving on from Drew?

Rams, 49ers, Seahawks, Cards. These teams are also out.

I'm getting 3 teams. One likely candidate and two iffy teams. I don't know where you're getting 10-15. Even if you add the aging vets like Big Ben, Brees, and Rivers, we only get 6. And those teams IMO are highly doubtful. Most of the other QBs are signed.

Since you listed the teams...the ones I think...and we’re both speculating either way...would be interested in Dak are:
  • Strong interest - Dolphins, Jets, Pats (yes, the pats because Tom terrific is 42), Chargers (Rivers is 39?), Bucs (can’t wait to get rid of Jameis), skins (Alex Smith is often injured, old and almost paid off guaranteed money), Bengals (Dalton contract guaranteed $ almost paid)
  • Strong maybes- Steelers (Ben is almost done), Saints (Brees almost done and Bridgewater has shown nothing),
  • Distant Maybes-Lions (If Stafford fades, traded, etc), Bears (you convinced Mitch Trubisky has proven he’s the real deal?) Vikings (I don’t know what they guaranteed Cousins but I bet they would take Dak now over Cuz)
I count 7 strong interested teams, 2 strong maybes, and 3 distant maybes.
Truth is, my list is just as speculative as yours. They are both opinions and you may be right. I just disagree with that opinion. And I could be dead wrong!

I appreciate the effort. I'm trying to look at it from an outsider's perspective. If I'm the Dolphins or Jets, I already have a starter. Dolphins are rebuilding and Rosen costs them 6M total over 3 years. That is crazy cheap. The Jets have Darnold on the 2nd year of his 4 year rookie contract. I wouldn't consider either of these two candidates. The Patriots are a possibility. But if Brady doesn't retire, paying them both would be an astronomical cap hit just on quarterbacks. Brady's cap hit is not team friendly despite what you hear.

Chargers, again, if Rivers wants to keep playing they really can't sign Dak. But definitely a candidate otherwise. I agree with you on the Bucs, I doubt they extend him past his 5th year. But the Commanders? They just drafted Haskins. I rule them out.

Steelers and Saints. Again, that's hard to judge. It all depends on if the QBs want to stay. None of these QBs, and I don't care how old they get, Brady, Big Ben, Brees, Rivers, are getting kicked off the team for Prescott.

Lions. Matt is on the 2nd year of his 5 year deal. He's not going anywhere until his dead cap gets lower. Same with Cousins. Dead cap too high until at least 2021. The Bears. I'm not sold on Mitch, but he's on the 2nd year of his rookie deal, right? Do you think they'd can him and pay Dak 30 mil a year?

I count two Strong, Bucs and Bengals. Teams with aging vets are a toss up. One or two of them might be interested next year. But the others either have QBs on rookie deals, or QBs that are under contract for several more years with enormous dead cap if released. Remember, Dak is good, but he's not an elite QB. I don't see anyone dumping their first round draft choices on rookie deals for Dak. I also don't see teams signing Dak to a huge contract while taking on a 30 Mil dollar dead cap hit. That just doesn't make any sense to me.

I really doubt there’s a big line waiting to over pay Dak?

We’ve already seen what he is without Elite talent around him.

So what Elite teams will be pursuing him?

That part made me laugh. I think there would be a grand total of 0 teams lining up to pay Dak more than $25 million a year. I so am hoping Dallas ends up calling his bluff and drafting another QB.
