Mates, hardy workaday oafs and contractors, today I ask, for general discussion, about priorities.

Yes.

Amari seeks riches.
Dak seeks riches.
Zeke seeks riches.

If you of thee Cowboys Fan Realm have 2 purses, to which of the 3 superstars would you throw? Which gladiators of the unfrozen tundra would you pick?

I would like to know how you rate these players in terms of riches.

2 are in.
1 is out.

Amari, Dak or Zeke?

Mine is Amari, Dak, Zeke, in that order.

Be ruthless, be practical, be fair.

Amari - game changer.
Zeke - Top 3 RB, still has room to grow.

Dak - would like to keep, but that's not this game. 2020 draft may have 10+ draftable QBs (1st-4th round)...some young guy could step into a dream scenario.

Sigh. I agree, but realistically, Dak, despite his inefficiencies, is safe.

Despite the fact that Zeke is probably the most talented player we have, IMO, today’s NFL is not built around RBs taking up lots of cap space. After Zeke’s option year, I would not be in favor of signing him to a big contract. His off field dependability remains an issue. He still acts like he’s in high school.

Today’s RBs have a much shorter shelf life than the past. Zeke has 868 carries so far in three seasons. This team should maximize him for the next two years. Because when that’s over, if I was GM I would low ball him and let some other team get cap strapped to a guy who by that time may already have fading skills.

Sounds rough, but I totally agree. Zeke is my man out. I think easier to replace and less importance in today's NFL. Zeke will be less dependable and less honorable.

It’s the hard truth. I love Zeke’s talent, but RBs are always a fleeting commodity. They can be great for 3-5 years, then fall off a cliff. I understand why so many fans scream that Zeke must stay. But football wisdom says otherwise. (Cue the Zeke attack dogs, lol)

Many may say Dak should be the odd man out, but consider that while it’s true that he is the least elite of the three (you get what I mean), he plays the hardest position to replace with a quality player.

The odds of finding a quality RB or WR is easier than finding a quality QB. Obviously a high first round pick increases the odds, but even without a high first round pick there is still a much better chance of finding a Marion Barber or DeMarco Murray or Antonio Brown or Brandon Marshall in the middle or late rounds than.a QB, or even an undrafted player like Arian Foster or Doug Baldwin. The Dak’s, and Brady’s and Romo’s are much more rare.

Even if you have a high first round pick the odds aren’t that great with a QB. There is a better chance of getting a Blaine Gabbert or Jake Locker or RG III or Paxton Lynch or EJ Manuel than a Pat Mahomes.

Easy decision for me. Dak and Amari are getting paid this year and both secured for at least the next 5 years. Zeke is going to have to wait. He's got more time left on his current contract and I might need to franchise tag him a couple of times once his 5th year extension expires. Then I'll be forced to give him a big payday or cut bait. If my math is right, that's 4 more seasons I have his services. If he's still running for over 1000 yds per season at that point then I may be forced to finally give up good money for him. He's made it pretty clear he wants that career rushing record of Emmitt's so I'm gambling that he'll still be going strong after 7 seasons in the league.

All 3 staying so whats the point?
The point, aside from the one atop your head, is while rational minds would pay to keep two, which would you say had less leveredge? What if all 3 want huge monies? Who is a priority? Who be not?
Dont make it opera, mama.

Zeke is a great player, and I love watching him. He can change a game, and certainly adds some wins.

That said, from a big picture perspective, football is a game of economics- the allocation of scarce resources. Where do you allocate your highest draft picks? Your limited salary cap dollars? I will continue to maintain that using a (hopefully) rare #4 overall pick on a RB is a mistake. And now, does the team feel trapped into signing him given its investment?

The fans want to sign everyone. Who doesn't love having a RB of Zeke's caliber? He is a fantastic RB!
But- the true cost is not seen, but it is felt. It manifests itself in places like special teams, and depth across the board. Think the #4 WR isn't important? That player is essentially one hamstring pull away from being basically a starting player in the passing league of today. How good is your #5 LB? Did you have to let a good one walk because you couldn't afford him? OL? CB? The missing depth is where the true cost is measured.

What $$$ will Zeke command per year? $15? $18? More? How many quality players can those dollars bring in, or retain?
Give me a quality 2nd-3rd round RB, and use top picks and resources on things like QB, DL, OL, CB, and then maybe LB & WR.

Still- I'll bet the Cowboys sign him to an extension.

Dak's purse is almost as big as the other two combined.

If we had sense, we would have been grooming guys to take over for Dak. Would have drafted another this year.

Churn running QBs until we get one worth 30mil a year *as a passer*.

Given the price of QBs, I'd draft two of them. We should have been serious about doing that for years.

Ah, up to your skylarkings again old bean.

Well, if I must choose between the three, I think that sadly, our lad Ezekiel would have to depart.

Not that he's the least talented of the trio. But, as is said, value of stature must be taken into account. Ezekiel is a very rare gem he, but possibly more replaceable with a lesser lot.

But, of course, all of this is a jape. You well know that the ever nebulous cap can be twisted and stretched so that they all can find home and hearth in Dallas for quite a while.
