Oh gotcha.

So you'd take player A who is 37 years old with no room to grow, a free agent at the end of the season, and hurts the CAP for next year since you have $4.25M less to carry over

Over Player B who is 23 years old with plenty of room to grow and showed promise at the end of last season, is under cheap team control for three more years, costs next to nothing and might be a hair worse than player A?

Yeah that's dumb.

I simply disregard anything anyone says when they think the money, CAP, contract, etc of a player doesnt effect the team.

Look, there's no such thing as Car Shield for replacement parts...but all three of the listed players have a strong history of contributing. Two of the three, are multiple Pro Bowlers. A fan usually roots for those to continue successfully their careers...but hey, to each his own ball of wax.

Myself, their play will be justified on the carpet.

That's why you would wait until after camp to cut him to see what you have first...

If we are talking Witten's 2017 blocking then it won't improve anything, and our run blocking by the tight ends was weak then also. And if he can't help with either of those things then the $4.25M CAP hit would best be used elsewhere.

I'm not having a $4.25M TE that has no room for growth sitting on the sidelines. If he doesnt perform they should have the guts to cut him like I said.

I have trouble understanding why you think that current Witten is so much better than what we have under him. Agreed, Witten has to prove he is worth $4.25M on the field.

I don't think I said that Witten is "so much better" than the other tight ends we have. I simply think it's better to find out if that's the case than to write him off.

Frankly, I think Witten could thrive this year on the underneath stuff because our receiving corps is much more dynamic than it was in 2017. He could be that consistent outlet that Dak was missing last year in the tight end group. The others have more physical ability, but he has a whole bunch more know-how about settling into holes and making himself a target for the QB.

You didn't say anything in your previous post I quoted about waiting until after camp to see what they have first. I'm in agreement with that. He's going to be king of the mountain, though, until someone knocks him off of it.

My Guess is just Lee. Crawford has young guns at his heels and Witten will re-retire. Maybe it’s wishful thinking.
Thinking you will be partially right. See Lee and Witten making the team with ease. Crawford has a fight on his hands but the coaches love the guy, so 80-20 he makes the team.

Once Witten signed his contract he was a shoe in to make the 53......Lee will too.....Crawford may not make it.

And I disregard those who think you have to cut the better player for your team for cap savings. That's just a ridiculous way to approach trying to win.

If we're talking about the younger players being as good as Witten, then I'm all for going with the younger, cheaper players. If they are not as good, then Witten should be playing. An index card was once used to determine whether our team had a first down or had to turn the ball over. It doesn't take much to affect the outcome of this game.

All three were leaders in the past. That didn't equate to playoff victories. Talent is the name of the game. Not cheerleaders. None of these guys are at the top of their game. Each could potentially be a progress stopper.

If Witten isn't substantially better than all of the other TEs it'd be in everyone's best interest for him to retire with his $4.25M CAP hit, and $0 in dead cap.

But of the TEs the one most likely better than him you didnt mention in Jarwin. I really wanted to see him grow with an abundance of snaps this season.

I think Jarwin is better than Witt right now, and I expect him to go into the season as the #1 TE.

I think Witten is going to retire again. Crawford suspended 4 to 6 games, Elliott 10 games, Gregory the whole season, which will make some interesting roster moves early and mid-season

And you call yourself Joe Realist?

- Dallas likely carry 3 TEs: Starting job is Jarwin or Schultz's to lose: McElroy, Gathers would have to bust out big time
+Witten likely makes it

- Sean Lee is the 3rd best LB on the team unless/until another LB pushes him out. He has leadership ability.
+Lee proooobably makes it

- Tyrone Crawford hurt his status with off-field stuff. I think at 305lbs, DAL will try to use Christian Covington like they used Crawford; splitting DT/DE
+Crawford is on the bubble

With Jarwin at #1, would you keep Witt at his hit with zero dead money?

I'll guarantee you that Witten and the team talked before Witt chose to leave TV and un-retire. If the team didn't want him here or didn't like his salary, he wouldn't have left the broadcasting both.

That makes no sense. We don’t owe him a dime if he retires.

Guess I should have phrased it differently - on his current restructured deal, we don't owe him anything. On his old deal, we'd owe him $3M if he retired instead of coming back.

Unless ESPN was throwing heat his agent's way that he was about to be kicked out of the booth...

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that you NEVER owe any remaining guaranteed money if a player chooses to retire before fulfilling his contract. On the other hand, if the team cuts him, then of course he gets any remaining money that was guaranteed.
