I rarely post in this forum so forgive me.

Just curious about how people view social media.

Specifically Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram etc.

Twitter went down today and several people at my work, mind you, were beside themselves.

I don't think it was down that long, but you would have thought their lives were somehow affected.

I admit, I use Twitter as a source of information. There is a lot, and I mean a lot of noise that you have to deal with, but if you can manage who you follow and connect with, it is okay.

Facebook? To me, it is a cesspool of what we are. Just awful. I hate it.

YouTube? Same. Except these people are doing their best to get noticed.

Instagram? Something my kids use and I don't see much utility to it.

Just curious since it is a big part of everyone's lives whether they use them extensively or not.

To me, it is great on one hand. In some cases, information is there whenever you want it.

On the downside, it is infested with diseased minds and quite frankly, moronic behavior.

Sound off.

YouTube is ok for finding those obscure songs you're trying to remember and I have a Facebook account because I have to for my job. I call it "look at me book" because it's mostly humblebragging. Look what I did! Look how great my life is! I never post anything personal. Weird phenomenon too of being "friends" with a bunch of people you haven't seen in many years and would have basically forgotten otherwise. Some guy from middle school sends me a friend request and I accept out of obligation, but we never exchange a single message.

That was my first reason for not joining any social media platforms. There are very few people in my past I care to hear from, and my brother tells me about anyone who wanted to say hello to me. If I care, I'll tell him to say hello back.

Forgive me for asking, but why would you need Facebook for your job? Use it for business promotion?

Yes, we promote our video games on there and make announcements, so I have to pay attention to how people are responding to our marketing. Not a big part of my job but I'm still expected to do it.

Facebook is a joke. 'Look at me' plus an endless supply of ridiculous memes and political arguments. It's scary how much time people actually spend on there. Posting their entire life to complete strangers.. I mean 'friends'. Then giving the most inane garbage a thumbs up. lol Like people actually give a crap what you're eating right now?? Plus it's an app run by complete tools. I'm sure they all are.

Social Media just might be our downfall, not sure we are equipped to handle it. The parenting these days is to hand their kids an iPad so they won’t bother them.

I limit mine to 30 minutes a day, hour on weekends max.

Facebook is what you make it. If someone is posting drama, non stop political bs, etc it's one click to unfollow or unfriend.
I use it mainly for local news, weather, hobbies and other interests of mine. I like seeing a few friends and family stuff from cousins and others I don't see much

Once I got disciplined about making/following schedules, that stuff went by the wayside. Too much of a time suck.

All except youtube, but I never really thought of that as an interactive site. Just use it for background music when I'm working at home.

I will say the news stations here are always posting racial and political story's to stir the pot to get action on their page

I do not hang on YouTube. I get what I want and out.

But some weirdos do. Ever read those comments?

As someone said, this is as close as I get. No interest whatsoever in FB or Twits. I'm not sure what Instagram is.

One thing I have noticed, is that I know 3 or 4 guys who used to be pretty much outcasts w/ few friends, and they live for social media. It's pretty much all they do.

Only if there's likely to be something humorous--like when it jumped to a video of "stuck in the middle with you." I was curious if everyone else associated it with reservoir dogs, and sure enough pretty much everyone did.
