No way is Cedrick Wilson cut. He definitely makes the team. It will be between Devin Smith and Austin.

6 WRs Cooper, Gallup, Cobb, Austin, Wilson, Smith

Tiny blocking TE Brown gets cut.
The speedy UDFAs get cut, we take a couple back to the PS.

I wonder if Reggie Davis is done for regardless. We didn't pick up a new teeny tiny gimmick player this year. We've been doing that forever. I'm hoping were done with that.

Caught a TD today after being in position to catch one last week... so likely the inside track to make that 6th and final WR spot... do you agree? So is Wilson out for sure now? What about Johnson and Austin?

Smith has delivered more than all the other WRs out of the top 4, and he has the best pedigree. He's on the team unless his play collapses into gross incompetence.

Johnson is cut. No pedigree, lots of drops. PS. KP fast guys come and go every year.

Suppose Johnson catches a deep ball. I don't see that changing anything. They know he can run fast and sometimes catch the ball. It's consistent execution that makes you a guy to keep.

For me execution is about whether or not the guy can actually run the routes and demonstrate high field, play and ball awareness.

Whether or not he actually comes down with the catch or the ball finds the turf after he makes a play on it with his hands, is irrelevant. Drops are flukes, like make-or-miss in basketball. Would you cut Steph Curry if he missed a couple open 3's or free throws in a row? I didn't think so.

It would help if he could actually catch something!
Drops are flukes. Like I said, if he makes a play and gets his hands on the ball, that's good enough for me. Doesn't matter if it sticks or lands on the turf. That's irrelevant.

Wide *receiver*. Not wide route runner.

Drops are only "flukes" if you actually have a very low drop rate. If you just drop often, they're simply a measure of your inability to catch reliably.

A 10% drop rate would turn a 70% QB into a 63% QB. That's huge. That increases incompletion probability by 23%. That's a guy who's costing you wins.

And I think Johnson has had multiple drops in both games. His drop rate has been maybe 30 or 40 percent. It might have been over 50%. It's a low sample size, but it's a *lot* of drops for that low sample size.

Receiver. Catching the ball is job one.

Last year being hurt was the exception, not the rule, for Austin's career. Before last year, he averaged 15 games a season over 5 seasons. That's a guy who stayed remarkably healthy for most of his career.

I think the choice to be made here is Devin Smith or Jon'Vea Johnson. I think #15 < # 81.
not even close, Johnson is pracrice squad material, Devin Smith has shown why he was an early second round pick, the guy has talent, loved the signing, hope he's finally turned the corner coming off two serious ACL injuries, I believe it comes down to Austin and Smith making the cut and I'd go with Smith.....
These are my top six to make the roster..
Cooper
Gallup
Cobb
Wilson
Smith
Brown( Cowboys like him, regardless what the fan base thinks)

Then what about Jon Vea Johnson? I think he's a stud and a great route runner with SPEED

How did he do last night? I was on the hype train until he **** the bed last game.

Can you name me anything about Johnson that isn't above average other than the drops? Because if the "dropsies" are his only problem, he's a lock to make my team if I'm the GM.

shouldve been converted to a CB, ...that's where wr with high drop rates end up as redshirt fr. In college

My thoughts:

Roster
  • Cooper
  • Gallup
  • Cobb
  • Wilson
  • Smith
  • Austin (our best punt returner...showed his impact last year)
PS
  • Johnson
  • Guyton

Drops aren’t flukes. They show mentally you’re afraid to get hit. That’s why guys shine in OTAs. There’s no risk of getting hit.

Coaches don’t take the most talented. They take the guys with the least risk. JonVea has too much risk to be counted on

I see no way that Tavon Austin is cut from this team.
I've said it for two years now. Cut Noah brown. Keep guys that can actually make plays down field. If you keep a WR just to block you are limiting your offense when he is on the field.

100 percent agree. I’d be shocked if they lost either to another teams 53. They’ll get to the PS where they can work with JonVea on his mental issues with the drops.

I can’t say anything about Guyton because he hasn’t gotten a lot of opportunities with the ball thrown his direction. Now that may be because he’s not open. We don’t know because we don’t have the camera angles

Yeah I don’t know why people are insistent on replacing Austin. I have saw nothing from any of those other guys to say his position is in jeopardy. Wilson looked good last week.

I don’t think we’ve seen enough of Brown to say what he can and can’t do. But I do agree just don’t bring him I just because he can block.
