After Cowboys rookie running back Tony Pollard had a solid outing in Saturday night’s preseason game, Jerry Jones suggested that Pollard might have made Ezekiel Elliott‘s attempt to get a new contract a little bit harder.

Asked about Elliott after the game, Jones said, “Zeke who?”

Fake News

Playoffs is another beast, I want my beast Zeke on my side to get the W.

"After last week's preseason opener against the San Francisco 49ers, Jerry Jones said Tony Pollard has shown he could be an every-down back. On Sunday, the owner and general manager was asked if Pollard is the best negotiating ploy the Cowboys have in talks with Ezekiel Elliott. "Zeke who?" Jones joked. Pollard had 51 yards on the Cowboys' first drive that ended with his 14-yard touchdown run. "He knows exactly what to do, and he knows how to do it, so it is, he goes out there and he plays to that level," Jones said. "If he continues this through the next several weeks, he's going to be right in the middle of it early, and that will really complement what we're doing with Zeke. Not replace that. And I mean that, not replace that. Nobody's getting cute here, but it'll certainly be a great complement … I can picture those guys same sets at the same times out there and really giving those defenses fits."

I'm a huge Zeke fan as far as what he does on the field. I would really like to see him get an extension.

With that said, Pollard is really making me think twice. If Jerry really did offer Zeke something in the range of $15m per year, Zeke should be signing that thing this morning. Jerry ought to be thinking that long term, that $15m could get him an elite safety or help him keep his receiver corps together or DB's or LB's or whatever. Jerry might be thinking about reducing that offer.

Zeke played his hand and lost. He can double down and hope that the Cowboys struggle in the regular season but if he goes there and they don't, he is looking at losing a massive amount of money.

That's not funny. Don't go there jerry. If Dallas gets to a big game Zeke will be in it.

Yeah, I liked what I saw last night in Pollard too. But keep in mind his good showing last night was against the rams backups. And also keep in mind that DC’s don’t game plan for PS games, so his excellent work last night was against a base vanilla defense.

I think we have an excellent young player in Pollard. I believe he will be an outstanding change of pace weapon this year. But I’m not ready to proclaim his greatness until he faces starters in a game that actually means something.

I've been saying all off-season that Zeke is a special talent and we'll never replace someone like him. Having said that, we can replace 80% of what he brings to the table with almost any RB on the market with all the tools on the offensive side of the ball. The biggest problem we have is that the lack of Zeke puts more pressure on our QB who is average on his best day with Zeke.

Cant tell you how great it was watching Pollard tear it up. This notion that Zeke is the only good back that can run behind a quality line is ridiculous.

Give me Pollard, a first round pick, a 3rd round pick, 15 million a year for 5 years and use that 3rd rounder on another quality back. I will take all that over Zeke any day.

Zeke for 15 million per season or

-Pollard
-3rd round RB
-First round pick used for a safety
-15 million per season to use on a pro bowl level DT in FA

IF Zeke wants a lot of guaranteed money he needs to go a year without any off field incidents that require a meeting with the Commissioner. If he wants the deal now the guarantees need to be low.

Jason Garrett: Tony Pollard “plays with maturity beyond his years”
Posted by Mike Florio on August 18, 2019, 9:54 AM EDT

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had jokes. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was slightly more serious in his assessment of the ability of rookie running back Tony Pollard to handle the job in the absence of Ezekiel Elliott.

“I thought he did a good job running the football,” Garrett told reporters after Saturday’s preseason game against the Rams in Hawaii. “When you’re playing against [Rams defensive coordinator] Wade Phillips, he’s going to do everything he can to stop the run on early downs. It was going to be tough sledding for us, but I do think we found some creases there early on. Obviously, the touchdown run was big for us

Whenever old Jerry the GM starts feeling full of himself something tends to go wrong. What will it be this time?

Its been implied that Gurley's $14.3m was a starting point. The $15m is a rough estimate that we are confident its in the ballpark of. I doubt the boys offered him $8m per year but it might be $12m or $14m. That doesn't change the point of my post though. The Cowboys offered Zeke a lot of money and might be rethinking that.
