Why demanding a blowout is silly

Almost all week, these boards have been full of “If we don’t beat Miami by __ points, we suck.” That notion is silly. Why?

The only reason so many of fans want to see us win by a blowout Sunday is because margin of victory somehow affects how we feel about our team. That's the only reason. We as fans (and football writers) are quick to see a margin of victory in a win as some kind of confirmation of what we believe about our team. But actually, in the NFL, winning itself is the confirmation. Not point spreads. If we win Sunday by one point or fifty, we remain in first place of the NFC east.

This isn’t college football, where point spreads matter to impress voters. Thankfully NFL teams don’t qualify for the playoffs based on a vote of football writers.

What do I expect Sunday? I expect Dallas to win. By one or by fifty. Just win.

I demand a thorough whupping on those watery mammals.

3 and 0 is what is most important. The Dolphins have been humiliated and there is no doubt despite what the coaches tell them in regards to tanking they're going to give a LOT more effort. I believe this 100%, and I also know Garrett sets the tone for the team with his weak demeanor when we're up, and lets not for Marinelli and the zone defense we play after up a score or two. Just based on history, I have to feel like this is going to be a much closer game and possibly lower scoring than we think. I believe in the cowboys, and love what they're doing, but I just feel that us blowing them out is too good to be true.

If the Cowboys can't cover the spread, they will be questioned about what's wrong with them. It should be easily done. No excuses.

Take a bow Bobby........to see some posters suggesting better win by 40 or 50 points is absolute BS. They forget there's an unspoken code of respect among NFL coaching fraternity and means not running up the score. If becomes obvious we are dominating the Dolphins and up by 25-30 points, look Garrett to start pulling back a bit.

Hazy, I'll take a win with no injuries. That's the best outcome.

I would rather this team learn something about itself that might help it later in the season by a close win rather than a close loss against ANY team including the Miami Dolphins

Get the win and stay healthy. Nothing else truly matters.

Totally agree. We should be hoping for 2 things

1. A win
2. The Cowboys leave Miami healthy or without adding bodies to the injury list..
Just to remind you we are at home we are not going to Miami

I'm really hoping to see the defense get better than what they've been and yes going to win no matter by how many points I do like to see domination though

Some of these posts remind me too much of the Pickle Bowl where forum members were predicting 40-3 Cowboy routes.

This is the NFL.

Anything can happen. If we come in too overconfident, expecting to win by 60 ... then we're going to lose.

It's not like we're some amazing franchise with multiple Super Bowls in the past 20 years. We're a team with 3 playoff wins in 20 years. I don't think we should be "Expecting" to beat anyone.

It is silly to say we suk if we don’t win by a certain margin. But it’s not silly to expect a blowout. If it doesn’t happen then we move on with a victory. A W is a W in the NFL.

Wining by a certain margin does matter if you’re wagering on the game which millions of fans do..
Guaranteed that if the Boys win a close game against Miami and win the division by one game at the end, not one fan will say the Miami win felt like a loss.

I expect low scoring game as both teams will try to run the ball. Miami to try and keep the ball away from Dallas and Dallas because Miami is weak against the run. If it is a low scoring affair, the usual troll haters will be out here pounding their chests saying the defense sucks, Dak sucks, etc.

We do know that the Dolphins management will be pissed if somehow they win this game, or any games this season. Although tanking happens in the NBA, this is a historic tank job for an NFL team.
Good point. The NFL has historically mostly avoided the scourge of teams tanking for the top pick in the draft. Without a lottery to protect it from happening, it may become a future issue.

As a formerly serious gambler, even in my heyday (early 1970s), I wouldn’t have touched this game with a 10ft pole.

Too many potential variables.
Yep. I’d never touch it ether. Although that opening line at16 is probably solid and why it had so much action early moving the line so quickly.
