I did a quick review of all snaps played by Trysten Hill against the Dolphins.

He played 47% of the snaps which was 5th in snaps played by a DLineman.

He has a very high "motor" as we saw in the preseason. He is constantly moving.

The 1st thing I noticed is that he played significant snaps at 1-tech; whereas, he only played 3-tech DT in the preseason. Generally he played 3-tech when the other DT was Covington and played 1-tech when the other DT was not Covington (Starting 1-tech Woods was out).

It is good that they are developing a 3-tech DT that they play at 1-tech DT as opposed to all of DEs they played at 3-tech like Crawford that are really too small at DT.

Hill flashed a few times getting into the backfield and showed his athleticism looping around the outside to crunch the QB on that one play where the QB had moved outside to his right and threw the ball just as Hill ran over him.

He did get blown up by double-teams a couple of times but they didn't draft him to play 1-tech and take on double teams. There was one double team late where he did look silly but he at least occupied the 2 blockers which does help somebody else.

There were a few plays where Hill was double teamed but the other DT was single blocked. That's a good sign.

Hill got his hand on the QB before the hand-off on that play in the redzone where they had an H-Back block him (The play where FS Thompson blew up the RB). They had run the same play earlier and the H-Back was able to get a good block on him the 1st time. On the one in the redzone, he was very close to blowing that up right at the hand-off but was off just a few inches to the side.

Summary: Hill is still very raw but is better right now than last year's 4th DT Daniel Ross, IMO.

I watched the same film you did and Hill looked fine for a Rookie starting his first game in NFL. He looked powerful at times, fast, athletic and a motor you can't teach. I would said he is going to be very very good down the road..

I didn't watch film, I watched broadcast game footage.

I will watch the coaches film when it's available tomorrow.

I personally want to thank you for taking the time to do all these evaluations and write your findings here! I'm sure it's much appreciated by many of us.

Hill didn’t look like an All-Pro or even a really good player during his debut, but he looked like someone who has talent that is worth mining and trying to figure out.

That’s what Marinelli liked so much about him after all, right?!

You took this directly from

From the article:

As of the moment equating him to Taco is premature.

No it's not.

Only if you want to dictate the narrative around this issue, or you know, if anxiety (that a high Cowboys draft pick was wasted) is your thing.

You know, I was kind of happy with his work.
I mean, this was his 1st game ever in the NFL.
I noticed his burst through the line to almost steal the handoff at the goal line.
I lauded him when it happened in the Game Thread.
I lauded him when he was getting stonewalled, but he never gave up and worked his tail off.

I'm hoping that by Year 3 he's looking like a really nice investment.
He seems to have the want-to on the field.

How can you compare a 1 game rookie to a three year veteran lol this Hill = Taco thing is about as dumb as Cowboys Zone gets.

Besides, Hill is actually showing a positive trait with his burst. I cant think of a single positive trait taco was showing this early.

It's like you people think that every DT is going to come in and be Donald. News flash, lots of good DTs barely touch the stat sheet for their entire career.

Edit: it's not just DTs. This board seems to totally ignore the value of experience, the unpredictable nature of grading prospects, and the massive jump in competition from NCAA to NFL

..I would love to be wrong with this guy. Ironically, I saw better flashes of him in this game than all pre-season. ...so>>>>lets roll with it.

He spent a lot of preseason getting double teamed and most of the "he's a bust after only 5 months" crowd seems to ignore that entirely. I guess rookie DTs should be beating double teams in their first 5 months or they suck? Hah

thanks X

look forward to your evaluation of his technique compared to preseason

Much of it's about recognizing what NFL offenses are going to do.

He saw that same play twice in the Miami game where they side-block him with an H-Back and he was better on the 2nd one.

One thing that college DL don't expect before they get to the NFL is how much holding NFL OLinemen get by with every game.

Hill has to learn to get combat those sneaky holds using a variety of techniques; however, right not he just needs to get comfortable with the basics.

I was a little critical of him at first but was encouraged by him after this game. now lets see what he does against probowl lineman like the saints and packers. it is a good start.
