2 things.... I think his natural position will be the 1tech and be a 2 down run stuffer. And I'm good w/ that. 2nd...I like that he hustles to the football. Seemed like he was in hot pursuit quite a bit Sunday.

I did a quick review of all snaps played by Trysten Hill against the Dolphins.

He played 47% of the snaps which was 5th in snaps played by a DLineman.

He has a very high "motor" as we saw in the preseason. He is constantly moving.

The 1st thing I noticed is that he played significant snaps at 1-tech; whereas, he only played 3-tech DT in the preseason. Generally he played 3-tech when the other DT was Covington and played 1-tech when the other DT was not Covington (Starting 1-tech Woods was out).

It is good that they are developing a 3-tech DT that they play at 1-tech DT as opposed to all of DEs they played at 3-tech like Crawford that are really too small at DT.

Hill flashed a few times getting into the backfield and showed his athleticism looping around the outside to crunch the QB on that one play where the QB had moved outside to his right and threw the ball just as Hill ran over him.

He did get blown up by double-teams a couple of times but they didn't draft him to play 1-tech and take on double teams. There was one double team late where he did look silly but he at least occupied the 2 blockers which does help somebody else.

There were a few plays where Hill was double teamed but the other DT was single blocked. That's a good sign.

Hill got his hand on the QB before the hand-off on that play in the redzone where they had an H-Back block him (The play where FS Thompson blew up the RB). They had run the same play earlier and the H-Back was able to get a good block on him the 1st time. On the one in the redzone, he was very close to blowing that up right at the hand-off but was off just a few inches to the side.

Summary: Hill is still very raw but is better right now than last year's 4th DT Daniel Ross, IMO.
Anything you see on tape ever negative? Or do we just have 53 All -PRO players?

Trysten accomplished nothing on that play. Had Thompson not shed his block and made the tackle, it would have been a wide open TD run up the middle. Trysten would have done better to contain and plug up the middle, instead of rushing right past the ball carrier. Then again, shooting the gaps has always been Marinelli's way.

Its early to call him a finished product, he needs to season this year, most late second rounders do that come in and play the Dline. Even with the Taco debacle I still trust the drafting side of the front office.

He played 31 snaps and jumped out twice. He has no bull rush at all.

But he will be good at both looping stunts and slashing stunts. It just so happens that the Cowboys haven't been calling as many of those stunts as they did last year. Thanks to the Rams.

Like most rookie linemen, his strength needs development, which takes time and lots of weight training to correct.

Like his early profiles indicated, his quickness is exceptional for his size. He'll be likely to improve, given due time.

Looks like he lost balance and fell down.

Would be nice if someone talented with video and access to video could post every Hill snap against the Dolphins like last week when we got to see Collins vs Kerrigan.

It is moreso showcasing his traits. He almost hit the qb before the handoff. That's impressive even with it being a trap play. A tad quicker and could have been a sack or fumble.

Yeah I see a lot of praise for that play lol.

He literally was unblocked.

Did you notice the Defensive Ends?

That's a type of option play where they want to roll the QB out and have at least 1 player kick out into a route.

They ran the play earlier and the H-Back slammed into the side of Hill and actually did box him out.

This time Hill was attempting to get to the QB before the H-Back could move over to block him.

Hill stayed low to limit the H-Backs ability to hit him from the side.

If Hill had managed to get a few inches over he would have blown up the play right at the hand-off which could cause an turnover.

He literally was unblocked.

They ran the same play earlier and the H-back slammed into him from the side and actually did box him out.

This time Hill wanted to get to the QB before the H-back could get over. Hill stayed low to avoid getting hit in the side by the H-back.

It's rare to see a DT touch the QB before the hand-off and it's not uncommon for a DT to be unblocked at times. Aaron Donald is one of the few DTs that I've seen with the quickness to get to the QB before the hand-off on these types of plays where the offense tries to use the DT's burst into the backfield against him.

We often saw David Irving get trapped so far away from the QB/RB on those types of plays that he was in another area code.

You're overthinking it..

We know he does have a quick get off. He shot the gap completely unblocked at the goal line and was instantly in the backfield.

Hill's problem from what i've seen is he is stuck on blocks and can't shed them.

It's a good write up. Thanks!

I also want to note that everything I read last week pointed to Hill being really coachable and buying in to the program. If I read all of that correctly, and if it's true, Hill is already on another level from Taco. Hill was better in week three than taco was in yer three.

If we want to compare the two, wait until Hill's 3rd year.
