Why not try the 70 yarder?

This, you cant take a sack and the coach has to have a sense of urgency.

This is where Romo was at his best b/c it was one of the few times during the game when he WASN'T looking to the sideline. The QB has to take over the offense in these situations. The sideline should be out of the picture with 1:37 and no timeouts. It should be Dak and whoever is in the huddle. It was just obvious that we haven't prepped in the right way for these situations.

It would have taken extreme altitude and a tailwind to even come close to a 70 yard field goal. I’m sure the Cowboys have tested Maher’s leg strength in practice and know where his cut off point is. We’ve seen plenty of Hail Mary’s work but we’ve never seen a field goal longer than 64 yards. Even if you don’t reach the end zone with a Hail Mary the ball could be batted up in the air and a receiver could run into the end zone ala the immaculate reception. It’s not likely but the odds are better pulling off a Hail Mary than making a 70 yard field goal.

I didn't understand why at 1:30 left in the game why Dak was even given the option to throw short and medium, only should have been throwing as deep as he can. Coaching again decided to be stupid and go for threshold field goal range, F that get it down inside the 20.
Dak had deep options, but felt they were either covered or there wasn't enough time for them to get open.
It's up to the QB to decide to take the short option or not.

Maher’s 62 yard field goal cleared the uprights by 2 or 3 yards. He nailed that kick. No way could he make one from 70 yards out.

I realize how unlikely it was.

But we've seen two weeks in a row that Dak can't throw a ball 55 yards into the end zone. Came up woefully short both times.

So why not see if Maher can catch a line drive perfectly flush indoors?

To me, it's the most likely unlikely option there.
he kicks from 35, taking 10 steps running at full speed and still barely makes it to the back of the endzone and many times just in the endzone...that would make it a 70-75 yarder when it hits the ground. to make a 70 yard field goal, he would have to be able to kick it 80-85 yards just to make it over the bar....could any kicker running full steam kick the ball to the other endzone from the 15-20 yard line? much less taking only 3 steps and having to get it over the DL...

that would have a 0.000012% chance...the hail mary had a 0.001% chance....much higher to go hail mary….but both had a fat chance to say the least

The only option should have been throwing it at least 30 yards or more.

It would have looked equally bad. Might as well send up a Hail Mary pass over a lame duck kick.

Didn’t Dak throw a TD to Beasley last year that traveled about 50 yards? On the run? To his left?

I don’t think throwing the ball 55 yards is a problem for him...

You make really good points.

On the kickoff he also doesn’t have guys rushing him and trying to block the kick, or players he needs to kick over.

So, yeah. The Hail Mary was the better decision for sure.

I was thinking that during the game, it is indoors, and I wonder can they move the ball 1 or 2 yds closer to line of scrimmage,
or does it have to be a set # of yds back?
If it is legal on a long kick I would move it up a little. but maher was the best option.
Also if NO commits a penalty it gets moved 5+ yds closer.

But the hail mary dallas is awful at it, I think I saw witten as one of the guys lol, and he is way too slow to get down there in time.
Collinsworth said it would take too much time for the guys to get down there, so it doesnt matter if dak gets it too endzone if none of our
guys are there yet.

Also I thought a deep crossing route would be good, and have rest of guys going for endzone as a decoy. maybe rac gets it to endzone.

But Dallas is horrible with that type situation, they need ideas, and to work on them a lot !! lol

erod--i was thiniking same thing...i know Maher would have needed to back up more and kick the ball lower trajectory for distance hoping not to get blocked...but he has made 70 yds in practice...but he had kinda running start...but why not?

Eros, ask my son - I immediately yelled “KICK IT!!!”. No way a Hail Mary works in that situation.

Agree, there's a reason the NFL record 64 yarder was in Denver.
