Kris Richard: Run defense issues have been addressed

The Cowboys did something against the Packers last week that they’ve never done before.

They allowed running back Aaron Jones to become the first opposing player to run for four touchdowns against them in a single game. They did better in terms of overall rushing yards allowed and the team ranks in the middle of the pack in run defense over the entire season, but defensive coordinator Kris Richard said that shoring up the run defense was still a priority this week.

Oh well I guess everything is better then. I’ll sleep better tonight.

Why is the passing game coordinator standing in front of microphones and addressing issues with stopping the run? I understand that the whole defense is involved in stopping the run, but isn't it the primary responsibility of the defensive line and the linebackers ... who are not coached by Richard? And, also, don't we supposedly have a defensive coordinator who is known as a "d-line whisperer"? If Marinelli isn't really in charge anymore, he needs to retire.

It's generally understood that Marinelli has been deferring to Richard as he takes over the primary DC roles, so maybe you should be asking yourself if this is what Richard's run defense is going to look like,,, Maybe Seattle let him go for a reason (presumably)?

Jets have a porous OL and like GB hasn't been much in run game, with having Leveon Bell ,.. LVE is missing practice with the Flu, so i look for joe Thomas to see more and more time in LVE place.

Prediction Time;

After two pretty bad losses the Cowboys and Jason Garrett find themselves (believe it or not) in a MUST win game this week against the Jets. The Cowboys defense looked absolutely awful last week against the Packers and their no name running back just embarrassed them. So what do the Cowboys need to do to get to 4-2, well how about this, run Zeke the freak! It's time the Cowboys got back to fundamentals and running the ball is a really good start. Now defensively it's really simple, TACKLE but it won't be easy because Leveon Bell is one of the best backs in the league. The good thing about the Jets is they're not very good but will still give the Cowboys all they can handle but so far the Cowboys have been able to beat the teams they're suppose to beat so I'll take the Cowboys in yet another struggle.

football is a cerebral game offensively. HOWEVER, DEFENSE IS CONTROLLED CHAOS. He who over thinks, gets beat like a drum. It may be a case of too many chiefs and not enough of ONE VOICE. SCHEME is our biggest issue defensively...it is too complicated. Just play sound technique, read and react..stop rushing the down lineman up the field..its terrible..they are running past the ball lol...TEAMS ARE USING OUR AGGRESSIVENESS AND SCHEME AGAINST US. Tired of getting schemed to death.

Nothing like some verbal reassurance to quiet the fans, huh?

Wait a minute -- is this persistent dissention I'm still reading?
Is it remotely possible that the Zone is holding out for action? :omg:

I'll believe it when I see it. You would've thought it would have been addressed after the embarrassment of a Rams game last year, but here we are, still complaining about the run D .
And desperately addressing it w/ yet another 3 tech type, one who is a project player BTW, and then wondering why it didn't work.

The Packers had 300 yard rushing thru week 4 (excluding ARod's 53 yards). Against Philly they posted an impressive 31 yards (again excluding ARod). So, its not the opponent's abilities so much as how we AREN'T playing good run defense.
This is the WORST O line in the league, not worried about it.

If this game is that close then this team has even worse issues than they showed last week.

GOOD. Joe Thomas is the better player at this point. He had a great camp and has been our best linebacker. START THE GUY.

In Bell's defense, he has yet to face a bad defense such as ours yet. So far they have played the Pats and Bills, who have stellar defenses so far, the Browns, who are okay, but Myles Garrett and Co are monsters, and Philly, another inconsistent team, but serviceable enough to stop the run. Bell will have his breakout game against us. LVE sick, A. Woods likely out, no planning or scheming for the game, and our defense just not looking the same in general. That 2.9 average yards per carry will likely sky rocket to 9 average yards per carry after our game. This run D has more holes than Swiss cheese.
We’ll be fine, their O line is the worst in the league. We may not have a great run defense but I don’t see them running all over us, especially if we focus on the run and let Darnold beat us with his arm. Darnold is no Rodgers, let him try. Sell out for the run,

Prove it over the the remaining games. Not just a bad jets OL but against them all.
They'll get the chance to prove it the game after the Jets game. And then Barkley again. MIN has a pesky RB to deal with as well. And there's the Pat's and the Ram's and the Eagles again so they'll get a number of opportunities to prove they've fixed the problem.

And I assumed they were trying to fix the problem while Aaron Jones was creating the problem. What did Garrett/Marinelli/Richard do, write down "Problem 14, address the run defense.……..next week".

I feel it is necessary to ask this question again that no one has addressed for me. If Richard is so great, why did his HC, a D coach, decide not to keep him when he was rebuilding his D? Some give Richard credit for the Legion of Boom and I remember one game when they mentioned that those 3 stud DB's were all hand picked by Carroll.

He might be great but I really haven't seen it. All I saw him do in LA was yell at LVE and Smith on the sideline. I guess that could be called addressing but it sure as hell wasn't fixing. You cannot yell someone into reaching beyond their talent level.

Part of this issue is our own fault for these expectations. We just expected the D to get better, players like the Woods, LVE, Smith, Awuzie and Lawrence to get better. We saw what happened in LA and we saw what wasn't done to address that in the off season. Did the same people think they could just fix that with the present personnel that thought they could go into last season with that WR corps?

And I wonder if Richard thought of addressing this in the media on his own or if he was asked to do this?

Cowboys F/O : clearly it goes better, there were 49 less yards against us this week than the previous week, we call that success.
