The expiration date on a HC’s respect

It seems to me- at least to my eyes watching the Cowboys-Jets debacle on TV last Sunday- that Jason Garrett is losing or has lost the respect of his players. Unless you have had consistent success, most coaches have an expiration date in the locker room. And it usually takes less than 9 years.

And there’s a simple explanation why: After nearly 9 years as head coach, it’s discouraging to these players to continue to work for a guy that’s not inspiring, not getting better, and essentially has very little power. They already know it isn’t going to happen with Garrett. Even shorter answer: It’s discouraging to play for a guy who’s simply this powerless and passionless.

When I saw the comments made by eaglets HC Doug Pederson essentially guaranteeing a victory Sunday night in Dallas and compared that to Garrett’s weak response, (“I hope we win”) it’s no secret why Garrett may be losing this locker room. I would rather play for a HC who takes public risks and shows confidence in his players than to hear some milk-toast drivel about “having a good day” as a part of “the process”.

When you haven’t won much for two decades plus, having a HC who keeps doing the same things and expecting different results, it has to be mind-numbing for these players.

The only way Garrett could somehow regain the respect of these players who are risking their long term health every week, would be to start acting like he’s something he’s not. A great leader.

Jerry Is closer to 80 than 70. How many seasons is he going to throw away on a guy who doesn’t have what it takes to win?

It doesn't matter if he's lost it or not.

He's been here over a decade and has no playoff success. It's not going to just magically come all of a sudden.

What we're seeing now is typical Garrett.

I expect the team to rally back and for Jerry and the homers to have something to point to as to why Garrett should remain the coach but once they make the playoffs we'll get absolutely pants'd by another teams superior coaching staff.

This team plays soft. I do think that's a reflection of Garrett. In 2016, they played hard, but many of them were just getting their first or second glimpse of Garrett. Now that they have been around a while they may see and feel what you suggest. Then that rubs off on the younger guys. Watching the Jets DL push the Cowboys OL around on Sunday was eye-opening.

The funny thing is that Marvin Lewis never lost his locker room after 16 years of futility............cant put my finger on why not
Depends on the definition of “losing the locker room”. When you don’t qualify for or win in the playoffs much, just “playing hard for the HC” doesn’t necessarily mean much. I don’t think the young players in NE love and respect Belechick a ton. But they do respect the Lombardis he’s won.

Belichick instills fear in those guys, which motivates them.

Kind of like a "school principal" mentality over there, from what I've heard from a few former players.

Well Lewis certainly has more skins on the wall as an NFL coach/coordinator than Garrett. That matters.

Whether Garrett is respected or not he should have been dismissed

its a results driven business and based off that he shoulda been fired years ago

2008 - i realized is offense requires pro bowlers at every position just to put up 17-28 points per game he should have been dismissed

2010- he should have been fired before wade was fired he was just as much the issue

2013 - third consecutive 8-8 season and losing the last game of the season with the division on the line he should have been fired

2015- idc how many injuries you have you simply dont win just 1 game without your starting QB he should have been fired

2017 - AGAIN you lose a star player and you put yourself in a hole he should have been fired

2019 - Slim lost to the 0-4 jets he should have actually been fired that same night

That's only 6. He must have some cat blood, he seems to have 9 lives.

Do we want to follow the Bengals’ model?
The Bengals have taken a dive since Lewis.

With Lewis they had the most consistent contender since the 80’s making the playoffs more often than franchise had done since its inception.

Good luck finding another puppet who can co exist influencing Jerry helping build one of the better cultures we’ve seen this generation.

The first sign of some troubled waters and we’re ready to abort. I’m beginning to want Jason to find success elsewhere but I’m still selfish and can’t imagine anyone we’d want willing to take on this mess.

I hate to change horses in midstream but change is needed. Dallas needs to hire an interim coach during the bye week. It just isn't going to get any better with Garrett as head coach.

Funny that you think this team is making it to the playoffs. This team has given up, believe it or not.
