Why this team is not a threat to contend for a Super Bowl

10 penalties for 103 yards

We committed these idiotic penalties and got away last night because we were playing the hapless Giants. But you do that against quality opponents and you will get your head handed to you. What is worse, is that there is not one iota of improvement in this category. Since the time Garrett was hired as coach, this team has suffered from penalties and it continues year in and year out. Short of Garrett being fired, what is it going to take to stop committing these idiotic penalties?

Agreed. Marsh penalty was simply a player not know the rules. Conduct penalties where players selfishly losing their heads. Procedure penalties - player not knowing were to line up. Holding - not using proper technique. Blindside blocks player not knowing the rules. Where I'm going with this is these are all coachable issues. On another subject how many KOffs are you going to kick to the opposing returner until you learn you have kick off coverage issues? Kick the frickin ball out of the EZ if you can't tackle.

This has been an issue through 8 games for the cowboys in 2019, but dont act like this has been an ongoing issue. In 2018 they averaged 6.3 penalties per game. That would be good enough for 7th best in the league this year.

Look at Garrett's decade long tenure as HC and this has been a problem more times than they haven't.

The team is not a Super Bowl contender for more reasons than penalties, starting with losing to the Jets meaning they will be on the road in the divisional round again if they even get there. Good luck.

disagree.
with our running game and defense...we are.
regardless of how folks feel about garrett..we are one of the best teams in the leage.
don't care about narratives.
our run game and our defense are built for the play-offs.

well, couple of them were idiotic and on the refs....the penalty for unsportsman conduct on Woods, was down right bad call... same with another call for unsportsman conduct down close to our end of the field. all of which had 71 in the middle of it.....

other penalties, like false start, holding, pushing, hands to the face...those are on players...it happens during course of a game and usually committed by lesser individuals on the team or injured players that are compensating.

I'm of the mindset that these are professionals who know the rules, so unless the coaches are giving them incorrect information on proper alignment, blocking without holding, and all the other stuff that we fans even know, I don't understand the concept of blaming the coaches.......especially the head coach, who isn't working as closely as the coordinators.

2018 - 12th fewest penalties in the league
2017 - 11th
2016 - 15th

Certainly nothing to brag about but in recent history the cowboys have been better than average in this category.

Also the cowboys opponents this year have 7.2 penalties per game, the cowboys have 8.0, not a major difference. I think the nfl has a penalty problem more so than the cowboys.

And just for fun the least penalized team in the league is none other than the super successful miami dolphins.

I agree. They know what a penalty is. They are either lazy or just dumb.

Yep, Someone needed to take control of the team last night and straighten some guys out. This should have been done the minute they were getting chippy.
Yup, we were talking about that in the game day thread...guys were getting 15 yard flags and doing everything to blow the game - and they go to a shot of Garrett standing there lookin stupid.

I think it's just the culture. They must not care all that much about penalties. Or execution in the first half for that matter.

Have you ever worked for a company like that? That cared about some things but not others?

The Cowboys are run like a Corporation. And corporations care about some things and not others. But the one thing it does care about is the bottom line.

As long as that's tracking, it's all good.

Thank you... it hasn’t been an issue.
