Why make Bennett a free agent next year?

Does anyone know why we gave Michael Bennett a new contract making him a free agent next year when we could have had control of him for all of next year? Don't we want this guy on our team next year?

I don’t know the numbers but would assume we didn’t want to pay what his contract was given his uncertainty...

I believe it was part of making him happy. Upped his bonus this year and making him a free agent so he behaves here. Getting a player to buy in is important. They did that. This guy has been traded to 2 different teams while on the same contract, from Philly to Patriots to Dallas. Now Bennett has a huge incentive to act right, play right etc.

Seems odd. They gave away rights for nothing.

The question is how Bennett got us to do it.

I guess it comes down to the incentive to play hard. Just would have liked to have his rights next year, too, if he continues balling

because “we have a great FO” that prioritizes player happiness over team wins

nothing new here

It wouldn't surprise me much if the Dallas FO offered Bennet a nice extension!

No reason not to, especially if he keeps making big plays and behaves himself.

That's about all I can come up with. Guarantee Bennett he's in a contract year to get the best out of him.

It doesn't say much about their opinion of Bennett's professionalism. If I'm another team, I notice this when I consider signing Bennett to a multiyear contract.

Maybe both sides considered the salary higher than anyone would want to pay, so they just avoided an inevitable public rejection?

I like it because he is playing for a contract
Bingo.

He's interviewing for the next big contract. Amazing how many players put up their best numbers during this time. Better for us down the stretch.

Could be a draft move. If Bennett walks then the New England pick stays a 7 and Dallas picks up a comp—maybe some scenario like that. Dallas essentially trades a 7 for a higher comp and the price of the rental contract. I’m not sure how it all works.

I think if he’s on the active roster for 3 games, it’s a 6.

We could still get that much in a comp pick now.

Jerry had to feed Zeke, and now he has to pay Dak and Cooper.

This is spot on.
