Is the Conner Williams experiment over at left guard?

Just a reminder that Ronald Leary did not look great his first two years either
Leary's 2nd year starting he was actually a solid starter (2014 season). That was after his 4th knee surgery as well (joint disorder is why he was un-drafted).

If anything an un-drafted Guard with 4 knee surgeries playing better 2nd year than Williams is a little concerning

Conner Williams never should of been starting IMO. Same with Heath and IMO again LVE. Dallas seems to always have their fanboy crushes on certain players and stick with them regardless. Witten shouldn't be starting either or receiving the majority of snaps at TE. It's crazy how this team is ran. Add playing Brown over Lewis. It's like high school.

He's not an NFL player. Great story......nice guy.......but not developing.
Of course he is an NFL player, he just may not be a high quality starter. Maybe he develops into an average starter, or looks better at OT, or just becomes solid O-Line depth, but It isn't either that a player is a standout or has no place in the league.

Why is McGovern not getting a chance to play? Hasn't he recovered from his injury?

Being on IR really sucks. It's not as if he can go out and put pads on to practice or anything. Not 100% but i think after the 6 weeks he might be able to do more during the 2 week period before coaches have to make a decision to keep him on IR or put him on the roster. Not 100% sure what hes allowed to do in that time.

After this current injury and time missed, do you expect to see Williams back starting at left guard upon his return to health? I think between what I expect will be a much more physical presence in Su'a Filo, and the return of Conner McGivern, I think the team would be wise to pull the plug on Williams at guard and simply let him try to be what he is - a tackle. Let him work at being this team's swing tackle to replace Fleming, whose contract becomes unmanageable in 2020 anyway.

But I would end this idea of Williams growing into the role of starting left guard. He's clearly this line's weak link and there's little or no indication that's going to change any time soon.
100 percent agree. I think with McGovern we will see a huge difference. Kid is a stud. I do worry about the pectoral tear though. Dont those have a tendency to repeat themselves?

I thought Xavier was the better player. Hopefully he keeps the job now. I really hope there's a new coach to decide what t do with him next year...

Hmmm.... he's on IR to start. He missed practically all of the offseason program and all of training camp and its doubtful he's been able to do alot of strength training. All of that plus he's a rookie who has never played a NFL snap. What exactly is he supposed to provide at this point. Even if they brought him off IR it would be 6 to 8 weeks before he's ready to play. It's a redshirt season!

Some nuggets from when Sua-Filo' started games last season

Team Record : 7-1. One loss was the shutout against Indy
Penalties : 1 holding

Zeke rushing yards by game with Sua Filo
Philly - 151, 1 TD
Atlanta - 122, 1 TD
Washington - 121, 1 TD
New Orleans - 75, 0 TD. Had a receiving TD
Philly - 113, 0 TD
Indy - 87, 0 TD
Tampa Bay - 85, 0 TD
New York - DNP

He averages nearly 108 yards per game running behind him. Williams came back and started for the playoffs last season. Definite upgrade IMO.
so EE ONLY ran behind the LG all those games LOL..i dont think so...lmao btw we were without Tfred correct? hmm blame CW over the chip he mossed but who missed the actual block? Fred freds back zekes not running as well.. huh? maybe Looney was better?

see how my narrative can have different story?

I think if there is any hope for the running game and the playoffs this experiment needs to be put on hold and revaluated. Him going to block the second level and leaving big Fred on a bad angle still has me pissed off . If he had just blocked somebody that was a 1st down and possibly the game

Nothing will probably change this year. Next year is a completely different situation.

Slide Williams or McGovern out to tackle and the loser stay at LG.

The knock on Sua Filo is his pass blocking is his weakness ; yet if we're not in 2nd and nine or 3rd and eight all the time because there are running lanes on 1st down , that lessens the issue somewhat................

His seemed to. That's why he ended up on IR in the first place. It acted up so they shut him down. I just hope that they're not just delaying needed surgery when it acts up again.

You mean like delaying Tyron's back surgery? Look at DLaw since his back surgery. Different player.

Maybe, but those are tricky. Often times, the player is never the same after back surgery. No guarantees on those.

Connor Williams is one of those skinny fat guys..

We all know those guys. They can work out and get a little muscle but they're still weak flabby dudes.

Honestly he needs at least 2 more off seasons of weight training to be ready. He's just too damn weak.

I am not the least worried about Connor WIlliams. Be it Guard or Tackle I expect Connor to make that 3rd year leap into consistency wherever he plays. It will be his 2nd Full Off season. He still not as strong as he can get. We forget he's only 22 years...

He may not be a stellar LG I'll admit, I just hope this post isn't a result of his blocking on that 3 yard loss against Minn. Because that had nothing to do with him.

Actually you have it opposite...Connor is a hard gainer for Oline position meaning it's harder for him to put on muscle and size on a lean athletic frame. Connor is an oversized Tight End
