Sadly for the NFL, there only 3-4 really strong all-around defenses this year.

As a result, Dallas' defense is actually rated as one the best of the rest.

  • 7th in pass defense
  • 15th in rush defense
  • 7th in overall defense (by yards)
  • 8th in scoring defense

Please don't compare theses defenses to those back in 2012, 2013, etc.
This defense is light years better than those were.

We just wish they were better still.
Like what they have in San Francisco, for example.

We wouldn't even be complaining about the defense if they could just force some turnovers like they did against Philly and NYG. Ironic considering one of the hallmarks of Rod's defensive philosophy emphasizes taking the ball away.

It's hard to win consistently in this league when you consistently lose the turnover battle, like we did yesterday.

Bingo.

You need turnovers if you want to win against the better teams.

I'm sorry, but there is no way we are ranked this high. These rankings will drop in the following weeks.

I agree 100%, trust me i'm not a blind fan. I actually broke my remote when those guys let the lions drive all the way down the field and Drieskel was looking like the second coming of Aaron Rodgers. But yes we just WISH they played better, But our defense is top 10, and could be a lot worse. The colts just had to runners rush for 100 plus yards, and thats happen to a lot of teams, so I was pissed because they allowed the game to be close. We have work to do, and talent/help to draft on defense. I think we pick up a DT first round, and a S second round, and a corner 3rd round. But lets just worry about this year right now, GO COWBOYS.

Yeah there's no way the stats added to us being ranked that high, we should all follow you. I dont know if your just not a cowboy fan, or a troll; or you may not watch any other football team but Dallas. But there are a lot of terrible defenses out there that are way worse than ours.

These stats are ridiculous. Our defense can’t stop anyone when it matters.

Anyone else ever notice how the games highest paid RB slams himself into the opposing defense for one yard all the time, while our defense allows average RB’s 5-6 positive yards over and over? Maddening......

Yes. But there are also a lot that are way better than ours. We struggled against a 3rd string RB and a backup QB. Being ranked high means nothing when it doesn't show on the field. I'm not the only one "trashing" the defense, so why am I the only one you're villianizing here?

All you have to do is look it up. This isn't subjective...it's just raw data.
Do you mean we really aren't that good? That is probably true.
Same , for sure, for the passing offense....which has not yet faced one pass defense rated in the top 12.

But that IS where we are currently ranked....which is what this thread states.

Part of the point of the thread was that pretty much the whole league is not playing great defense except for maybe 3-4 teams.

Lots of issues to address as a whole— but One small adjustment would do light years for this defense:

Tackling.

Just fill your gap. Take the right angle. Make the tackle.

Way too many sloppy fundamentals right now. Issue is not with talent— but with consistent execution.

We can’t change the scheme this year— we are stuck with it. Next best thing would be to execute it more efficiently, and they can definitely improve in that dept lol

Better stats:

Yards allowed per drive- 17th
Points allowed per drive- 12th
Defensive DVOA- 20TH
Turnovers per drive- 10th

I think that your suggestion has to be the answer. Defenses must be just down league-wide, because despite being ranked 7th overall and 8th in scoring, this defense is clearly not good and not playing well.

better tackling especially in space and against shifty RBs.. its an issue and causing them to extend drives and tire themselves out.. and yes the TOs we need many more splash plays.. the pass defense isnt horrible although the Safetys are not good...
