TV ratings suggest the locals don't care anymore

In the DFW market, the Cowboys-Bills game drew a 24 rating after halftime. This while the national ratings were off the charts fantastic.

Wow. I can't emphasize enough just how awful those numbers are for DFW. On Thanksgiving, no less. That number should be around 40. There's almost nothing else to do that time of day on Thanksgiving, and these are the Cowboys. What about Thanksgiving tradition?

People are done. Bored, and fed up. Past it. What is the point anymore?

The Cowboys fan base has never been this apathetic. I'm a prime example. I barely get moved one way or the other by wins and losses these days. That just isn't me. It's not that I'm getting older or that I've outgrown it.

I just don't like this unlikable team much, with its self-aggrandizing joke of an owner, its willingly castrated clapper at head coach, its lackluster quarterback, its aloof running back, and its cast of wannabe great players up and down the roster.

Sometimes I think I'd swap owners, coaching staffs, and rosters with just about any team in the league. Just for a different vibe.

When I saw that TV rating, which looks like a preseason game, I realized that I'm not alone.

That's the reason Jerry's got tears in his eyes. His good-time party is about to be over. He's got to go get another Parcells to save him from himself. He hates that.

It's like that in every state whose team isn't doing well. I've noticed so many empty stadiums this season. Except ATT&T. Go figure.

Jerry won't care where the ratings come from, even if those national numbers are from the hate Cowboys crowd.

Meh, I haven't cared since Jerry's drunken admission why he hired Bill Parcels was caught on video. I have believed from that day forward that Jerry cares only about the size of his bank account.

I found bird watching to be more exciting.

My ratings went there.

100% true. But the bad ratings probably equal bad merchandise sales, I would think/hope.

Apparently you've never heard of napping. Far more rewarding than Cowboys games this year.

Jerry doesn't care about lower ratings for the half of one game.
He will have his excuses just as he has them to keep Garrett.

The stadium is full, sponsors are still lined up. The STAR on the helmet is a world wide icon. And if a business can partner with that, the ratings don't matter.

Start losing those sponsors, then it will matter, as it will take far more rating drops than this. As long as Jerry has an 8-8 team to be possibly 9-7 or 10-6 with playoff hopes, those rating will be up still.

The team will need to be out of contention at this time each year for 3 to 5 years for that to happen.

There are reasons for that... the combined population of Dallas and Fort Worth is over 2 million, and my guess would be nearly half of that is people who relocated from the north and north east. Those people kept their team loyalties when they moved here. Heck, most of the Green Bay fans moved away from the frozen tundra and live here now. Only a fraction of them still live there.

But that's usually done with the Cowboy game on in the background, right?

Apparently, people turned on The Irishman on Netflix. (Which is a tremendous movie, btw.)

In Texas, the players are idolized and given somewhat more adoration than in other areas of the country, I think. The media hype and popularity of football here is a bit above and beyond what is typical in many of the northern climes. Cowboys football players are adulated to the extent that their players aren't under as much pressure to perform. Their fame and fortune is more easily assured than many other regions of the U.S. Jimmy Johnson alluded to that recently in one of his interviews. It really seemed to ring true to me, as one who spent his very early years growing up in the northeast.

The model is different now.

TV revenue is shared across the league.

as far as merchandising, Dallas has an agreement specifically where they keep merchandising revenue. Other teams share them. Jerry worked out the former deal.

It’s possible that local somehow impacts Dallas specifically as compared to other markets from this perspective, which may force Jerry to change.

Considering local fans are probably some of the worst Cowboy fans in the world does it suprise you? Theres more noise on away games for the team.

On the national avg Dallas vs the bills was the highest tv rating since 2016 when Dallas played washington.

Yes, there's lots and lots of money now. Jerry's kids and grandkids will be rolling in it forever. Doesn't really help Jerry anymore, who likes "winning" the deals more than the money itself. He's had more of that than he can count for a long time.

Now it's about legacy and being a "football man." He knows that HoF jacket was just a thank you for the money he made the other owners. It wasn't an acknowledgment of his football acumen.

He's 77, and he's capping off two-plus decades of abject football failure.

And he needs another Jimmy to fix it.

He's still just a wildcatting Arkansas oilman with a gift for gab. That isn't really what he wanted to be.

I think it was around 2006 or so, the ticket said, and not sure what years they were talking about. If around 2006 or before. That it was estimated there were 1000 people a day moving into the DFW area. Seems high but that is what they said. Maybe they meant a week.
of course who knows how many were moving out.

I think they may have been saying this was in the 90's though.

Meh I like watching the Cowboys. I'm not gonna go all hipster like you guys and pretend another dull activity is better.
