John Cooper won 111 of 158 games at Ohio State in the 80s/90s. He produced quite a few All Americans. We were glad to see him fired.

Why? He couldn't win bowl games and couldn't beat Michigan. He never won an outright conference title much less a national championship.

That is sliightly inaccurate lol.
He fell apart his final two seasons which is why he was fired.
Going 6-6 with a budget the size of Ohio State is rightfully unacceptable.
It took 14 years after firing Cooper to win a Natty.
Even Woody Hayes was rough at the end. /ducks

If you are one of 10 or so teams with budgets to go win a national title you should expect one every 20 years at least.
Comparing NFL winning % with NFL is just goofy however.

Garrett hasn't won enough big games and that matters. And if he doesnt win enough this year he will be gone.
But his regular season record isn't the issue and hasn't been.

Fans are just crying early because they like to cry mostly but also because losing sucks and no one wants to watch a team lose 3 in a row.
Garrett's job comes down to how he finishes this year and has since before the season began.

Any other organization in the league would have fired him after the three straight 8-8 seasons, losing a play-in game week 17 vs every other team in the division. Every coach in the league with a longer tenure than Garrett has gotten to the Super Bowl or won the Super Bowl.

To me, it's always been about what type of return a coach is able to extract with a given talent level. A coach who leads a 13 win type roster to 10-6 is doing a poor job. A coach who leads a 5 win type roster to 8-8 has done a great job. The 10-6 record is not inherently better than the 8-8 record as far as the coach's abilities are concerned

Very much this. He has never gotten more out of his roster than what was there.

This is why I say that they win because of talent and in spite of coaching, and not the other way around.

Garrett was .500 until being forced to let Scott Linehan took over the offense in 2014. That year the Cowboys went 12-4.
But the next season Romo got hurt and Garrett's incompetence was on full display, making the absurd decision to go ultra conservative with the offense and hope that, upon his return, Romo would lead the Cowboys and win every remaining game they had and get into the playoffs that way.
In 2015 the new offensive linemen had gelled and were likely one of the best in NFL history. The entire team was loaded, and Garrett shut it down. Romo never returned, and the Cowboys went 4-12.
If Garrett coaches, the Cowboys struggle.
Now with Moore as OC, it remains to be seen how much Garrett has interfered with his coordination.
But, once again, the Cowboys are .500.

Biggest issue for JG is Player/Coach improvement and playoff success. I do like Jason Garrett, but the expectation is to improve each season and that hasn't happened since the team has been rebuilt(2013+ in my book). Barring a deep deep playoff run, you cannot blame a gm & owner for wanting to move along from idling to try to find improving results.

A .560 Winning pct isn't great but its not bad. The real problem is the 2-3 playoff record and never advancing beyond the divisional round of the playoffs. There are not any coaches in the NFL tenured this long with no super bowl appearances. JG is in a class by himself in that regard.

9 years with at the very least, a very good roster and some times great roster and 2 playoff wins.. No that's not good enough. Outside of Marvin Lewis and the Bungals, no coach would have lasted this long in today's NFL.
