Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones did not enter Saturday's interview with Mike McCarthy with a preconception that he would become the Dallas Cowboys' coach less than 48 hours later, but a high-ranking source said McCarthy "blew the socks off" with his interview.

At that moment, the Joneses felt like they did not need to talk with other candidates after their first face-to-face meeting lasted more than 12 hours.

The high-level source said there was never a time Garrett was considered for a front-office role with the Cowboys. Garrett stated after the Washington game he wanted to continue to coach and he wanted it to be with Dallas. The high-ranking source said that had the Cowboys not been overwhelmed by McCarthy or any other candidates, there was a chance Garrett could have returned as coach.

The high-ranking source said the Cowboys did not reach out to Oklahoma's Lincoln Riley, who had been rumored as a potential candidate for two years, directly or indirectly.

On Sunday, Jan. 5, the Joneses were convinced McCarthy was their guy and they informed Garrett he would not be back in 2020, as Fox Sports first reported. Jones put out a lengthy statement thanking Garrett for his work and dedication after so many years as a player, assistant coach and head coach, dating to 1992.

So your owner was conducting a head coach search with retaining Garrett the back up plan.

He can't age fast enough for me.

This is great...but also scary. So they did actually leave JG sitting there "just in case" and he sat there waiting "just in case."

"I'd really like to take that girl home....but Jason you can be my slump buster just in case this goes South."

LMAO, they were at the singles bar and decided to take the fat chick home over the redhead!

Why do the head clowns in the circus allow this stuff to get out? The only positive that has ever come out is that Son talked Booger out of taking Manziel.

So just so I understand. They didn't fire Garrett right away because they felt if none of the interviews went well they'd just bring Garrett back? They didn't inform Garrett he was canned until after they realized McCarthy was their guy?

LOL. Geezus.

My one question is what does it take to blow the socks off of Jerry and Stephen? Is that asking for too much info?

@Risen Star I don't think Garrett was a back-up plan. I think that Garrett had a prove-me year and the Jones decided during the middle of the season they had enough. I am sure that the off-set language of the contract required compensation if Garrett was fired before the expiration. Why do a pay-out? It is also respectful to end his tenor without being fired. The key players on the team spoke highly of Garrett. In the end, who cares? I am glad the team hired McCarthy.
