It's time for a brutally honest roster talent evaluation

Honest talent evaluation - our talent is severely overrated.

Based on Garrett coaching? Marinelli's terrible defensive scheme and coaching?

This same thing was said about the Rams in Jeff Fisher's tenure there. They said Goff was god awful and a bust. That they had little talent. McVey steps in and immediately improves it and they win the West. Then go to the Super Bowl the next season. Coaching matters a lot in this league. You see it in sports at all levels.

I thought we were SB ready. We just needed a better coach. So we went and got one. And Bonus. An entirely new coaching staff on top of it.

So what are you trying to say here, Bob? That we have serious issues at the player level and were never really SB ready to begin with?

Ahhhhhhhh, ****. The Peeps aren't gonna like that.

Right . I thought our core issues were coaching?

I don’t expect Mike to revamp the talent base.

Please name them, with their comments that Jerry knows nothing about the football side. I'll wait.
There’s an article from the DMN in 2017 by Rick Gosselin, the Dallas writer who votes for the HOF. The title is: “
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones earned Hall of Fame jacket by changing the way the NFL does business”

I can’t post the link but you can look it up.

Is that the only example you have ? Cause most thought that Tams team was loaded with talent just needed a QB. Just because Goff struggled his rookie season didn’t mean he was a bust .

Boy genius HC didn’t help this year in LA. Lol

Cowboys had a starting QB and stud RB on rookie contracts and blew it.

1 playoff win.

Now, they are due or had received huge raises and we have the highest paid offensive line, with 3 of the 5 nearing or at 30 years old and getting in the meat of their deals.

I can't see how this team can acquire potentially high talent in those listed areas except through the draft.
Now, you don't need studs at every spot, but you need competent to good players in key areas. Spots where the talent has been weak for years like at DT and safety for example.

Might've turned out okay-ish if you keep cycling your cheap contracts, but the drafting the past few years has been straight junk and now the roster will begin to regress once these guys get paid and other guys that can't get paid leave. Byron Jones is probably the 1st domino here.

With Amare, it's not just is the WR worth the money.
It's also, do you want to spend two #1's or a 1 and a 2 just to run out a cheaper rookie WR? Without Cooper, we'd definitely be drafting a WR.

Plus, both the Eagles and Commanders need WR's badly....I'd hate to have them get the veteran Cooper and see him abuse our secondary.

I know right? Its so ironic that folks on here throw shade at us evaluating talent but Jerry Jones is qualified?
I agree. He’s more qualified than most owners. He’s just not a full time GM and probably doesn’t watch a lot of film . Not the typical GM.

Ive often argued the rest of the league who fares worse than we do should be ashamed Jerry has built a better than they have.

But it still comes up short versus the more prolific GM’s and staffs .

once we address the interior of the D, we will begin to see gradual improvements. Inside linebacker ,DT(NT), AND BOTH SAFETIES need a look.

I agree. Do we really need to invest top dollar into one position like that, other than QB? I RATHER not do that. I rather roll the dice with Devin Smith,Wilson and Gallup,Cobb. Amari can stay, but it would need to be on a team friendly deal. WHICH ISNT LIKELY. I see Gallup traded if we devote big money to Amari. Its just how I see it.

Right now Amari and Cobb are both free.
Everyone assumes Cobb is back but I am sure cost will play a role there.

The WR group put up lots of yards but also led the league in drops.
I think I'd like a Beasley-esque hands guy quite a lot in there as WR4 at least.
Unless you get that with an elite TE.

Cooper is tough. I am certain he wasn't right last year physically and that probably wore on him to point he wasn't right mentally.
Looks like his agent's kick the can gamble failed where others worked perfectly.
He probably should have taken a Zeke stance and gotten paid last off-season.

Spotrc says////
Market Value
  • 5 yrs, $98,589,580
  • Avg. Salary: $19,717,916
  • NFL Rank: 24
  • WR Rank: 2

I simply can't do that given his drops issue.
HELL NO!! nearly 20..BYE BYE COOP WE WILL MISS YOU..

those wrs in that category put down 1600-1900 yard seasons with many more Tds.. hes under 18 guy..

Coop will promptly be signed by Philly, I almost guarantee that. Do we want that?

The good teams do what the headline says every year.

The Cowboys are in a situation where they can really do a serious evaluation with a bunch of coaches that don't have horses in the race. They have no one to defend and I don't think Nolan gives extra points for effort like Marinelli did.

Jerry's been deferring player personnel evaluations and decisions to his coaches, Mclay, and Stephen Jones since about 2013. He doesn't do any of the work of a GM. Its just a title. Thats the only reason for the roster improvements........on paper anyway.

effort means nothing without the desired result. That's the biggest issue with Rod. Glad he is gone.

I have NO problem if the top priority in Free Agency AND the draft is the trenches. Give me 2DT's and at least big Left Guard. A new swing tackle that has the potential to be Tyron's replacement too. Fix the trenches first, then fix safety, DE's, LB depth, CB, TE.

Like I said...I can’t name anyone who would say he’s a great GM/Football man. You’re actually re-making my point. I can’t name anyone.

You are ducking my question. Name one HOF voter that says Jerry knows nothing about football and the football side had zero to do with his HOF election. Because that was the claim several others have made in this thread and you are backing up.

Not laughable at all..........Jerry made it because of the contributions to the NFL as owner NOT for what he's done as GM for the Cowboys
