OK I see. So even if he makes $35m a year, his cap hit could be lower than that?
Yes, that's always the case, especially in the first year. DLaw only had a cap hit of I think $11m this year but got paid over $30m.

It's pretty rare that, for big contracts, the cap number and the AAV align early in the deal.

So this means that toward the end their actual cap hit counts more, a lot more right? The proverbial kicking the can forward?

Depends how it's structured. Aaron Rodgers I think has a cap hit of like $36m next year but only $22m cash lol.

Not long ago many said la'el Collins would be allowed to walk. Why would we let Jones just walk. Better to try and work out a deal. Or a trade. I'm sure stephen's on top of things.

In my opinion outside out our freak of a right guard Zack Martin (second greatest guard in Cowboy's history, Larry Allen being number one of course) he was the Cowboys best offensive lineman and should have made the pro bowl he was that good this year at right tackle! Jones will be too expensive especially with all of the other FA the Cowboys have I just don't think Jones is good enough to pay especially when the guy doesn't get any and I mean any picks! Two years in a row without a pick, that's like a D-end going an entire year without a sack!

Can you list all the CB's that you believe are better than him?

Not trying to start a fight, just don't know that I can name 5 I would put on the field in front of him.

IMO, Gilmore is clearly the #1. After that, probably Ramsey .... but he seems to have lapses that are concerning. Few other I could consider but they all have inconsistencies (Humphrey's, White, Alexander).

I have seen Byron line up against clearly top 5 receivers & hold them in check. I understand the lack of picks argument but I think people vastly underrate what it takes to perform at the level Byron has played these last two seasons.

So if you let Byron walk, you have to probably overpay a FA who isn't as good or trust that you can draft a guy who can come in & start, right?
I mean we don't have an understudy that looks like he was ready to start. Unless you plan on resigning Brown and letting he & Lewis be starters (one of them play outside & one the slot). If you lose Byron & Brown, you've got a lot to replace. As in serious issue.

He only had 64 passes thrown against him.

How many picks should he have?!?

Unless they want a cornerback that will go THREE years in a row without a pick. Imagine your "shut down" cornerback without an INT for two years in a row, how is that even possible? There is no way you bring back Jones when you have to pay Prescott and Cooper big money plus Byron Jones isn't even worth paying him among the league's highest-paid CB's! Time to go in another direction, let Jones walk (actually let him run) and either draft a corner with your first pick or pick up someone in free agency!

The scheme the Cowboys were running was horrible nobody was getting ints.

No one wants to pay Jones because he didn’t have ints in his only two years at the position....in a defensive scheme where no one gets ints. We’ve had first rounders to big money free agents and everything in between at CB in this system, yet none of them has created turnovers, but we want to judge Jones, whom QBs avoid, for not having interceptions. Does that make sense?

Jones is by far the best CB on the team....don’t make me laugh mentioning Lewis. It’s not even close. When a guy covers well and teams continually throw most passes at the other side of the field, and when that guy can also cover the best TEs in the league when asked, yes, that guy is worth paying. No one knows what any of our guys can do regarding INTs because we haven’t had that from any CB or Safety in the past decade with this defensive scheme.

Let Jones walk and have Lewis, Awuzie, and Someone else, maybe Brown if resigned, as your starters....you’ll see how good Jones was.

If they let Jones walk, corner becomes an immediate need.

Maybe you meant to reply to another poster. I am defending that he is a good player, not criticizing.

I would like for all defenders to get turnovers but it isn't the "be all, end all" for me.

3 or 4 interceptions. Others he's comparable with are more than capable of pulling it off. If you're making the argument he's a top five corner.

I'm going to be the contrarian but why are people so against Jones? Yes we need turnovers but did anyone think maybe its our system? He is our best corner. He can slide to other positions if needed. He's a good locker room guy. Never complains. People are trying to run him out when our D as a whole was devoid of turnovers.
They are fine with Awuzie getting burnt time and time again though. Some allow the players they like to get a pass and one's they don't like to not get a pass.

Chido is a whole other can of worms and this little rant could not be farther from the truth. Chido has been lambasted on here for getting burnt and the few who defend him usually say well it was a tough throw or miracle catch.

I like Byron Jones and have maintained he should have never been a safety going back to the official forums. I am concerned with him struggling even more so than he did at uconn creating turnovers.

Him losing the ball repeatedly and his limited field vision isn't going away with a new scheme.
