And that bargain shopping got us one playoff win and two years sitting at home when the playoffs started. He's no longer a "bargain", he'll either get the tag or a big contract after the Mahomes deal skyrockets QB contracts league wide.

A well-coached team can get a Bridgewater led team to 8-8 to 10-6, I am sure. And it won't be 14-20% of the cap.
You would be correct. It got us the same result we’ve been accustomed to for so long.

What type of role players can you get for 5 million? Didn't we sign Nolan Carroll and Cedric Thornton for that? That 5 million they save will go to signing Anthony Brown.

And I do agree which is probably why they are stuck I'm assuming. Cowboys don't want to set a market price for Dak and his team believes he should be paid more than Jared Goff.
Its all about talent evaluation these days, and it has been.
The game is not about how much money you have to spend, but how you spend it.
Its drafting success, and signing FAs that can contribute, and then being able to take that talent and apply it to winning on the field.
Sounds simple, but its not,,, just take a look at the Browns roster and ask yourself why that team has struggled forever..
The coaching overhaul was a start for this Cowboys team, but it shouldn't be looked at as the total resolution, their still exists many glaring issues.

Well they did do it with Zeke and Tony Pollard. I guess its somewhat different since they can actually play both guys at the same time but I thought they drafted a running back a bit high to be Zeke's backup. But maybe it was a value thing.
Running backs are generally short-term investments. Franchise quarterbacks are long-term investments. I think consideration should be made as to how long anyone believes the front office will attempt to retain both Elliott and Pollard over the long-term--especially if Pollard continues to improve as a running back.

The cost is definitely a factor. I will scrutinize Dak much more when he starts making mega bucks.

That said, Dak has been raked over the coals for 4 years while only being pay $4.027 million total. He was an absolute bargain, maybe the best bargain in the entire league over this time period. That hating, even when we won and Dak played well, had absolutely nothing to do with cost.
Dak was making 500,000 a year and scrutinized lol. Might as well get compensated for the scrutiny lol. I'd rather make 35 million a year and get scrutinized than make 500k and do it.

This is true but what is a franchise quarterback? Seems like the only way you are considered a franchise quarterback is if you are a top 10 pick. Would them taking a guy in the 2nd or 3rd round be considered a franchise qb?

In my opinion, the front office investment in a high round draft pick at quarterback would automatically be indicative of a possible replacement for Prescott. That said, I believe the front office will nullify all reasonable speculation once Jones and Prescott settle on mutually acceptable contractual terms.

I'm not a fan of granting him $40 million, which he seems adamant to insisting upon at this time. Much depends upon what he demands and the circumstances with what a highly capable backup commands. When I said within the first four rounds, I wasn't favoring a 1st or 2nd pick at all. I'd be perfectly OK with a 3rd or 4th, although it would depend largely upon who was available at that juncture. No need for you to agree -- just my opinion. I also believe a better backup than Rush is a necessary addition.

I respect your opinion. I am simply stating that my observations of the front office indicates to me it will not invest in a draft pick higher than a fourth rounder at the position for the foreseeable future. My opinion is also based partially on the sizable allotment of the franchise's salary cap that will be assigned to Prescott once the terms of a new contract is hammered out. There is always the chance I could be wrong though.

In my opinion, a franchise quarterback is a player who is unquestionably a team's long-term starter at the position. I think Jerry Jones has an even more inflated view of my definition.

For me, Jerry Jones using a high round pick on a quarterback, now and/or within the next five years, would be reflective in a change in his evaluation of Prescott. The high round pick would be his gamble in getting another potential 'sure-fire' franchise quarterback to replace his current one.

Much depends if one is willing to take a chance with Cooper Rush if Dak is forced to sit out for a few games. It's not like that is such a far-fetched idea. There's no guarantee Dak will be ok with the shoulder that was injured at the end of last season. Just food for thought. I would agree that there will be other needs to take care of before a backup QB comes into the picture, although if a good QB that appeals to the staff shows up, it's a possibility. If Dak is adamant upon getting $40 mil, the FO could surely change their minds about drafting one.

This is the thing about the NFL though. You don't get by with 5 million dollar role players lol. You get by with cheap role players who are on rookie contracts who are playing for contracts. Getting retreads who other teams don't want? That's not how you build a team. Whatever money they save from getting Bridgewater would go towards re-signing their own guys. I know it sounds great in theory to think you can get some JJ Watt type in free agency but that's never the case.
um m Quinn and Cobb did well and its not just 5mil its whats you have ;eft to have the 5mil to add to it..say we needed 9 to sign a solid FA, well that 5mil now got that guy here..

its important to get Dak signed but for a team friendly deal or the Tag..

this thread was simply is dak 10-15mil better than a player like Bridgewater and the answer is NO!

trust me , this isn't just about dak!

you get 5mil less from Dak , sign Amari 17 instead of 20 , Byron 10 instead of 14 etc etc

if they all want to break the bank, I let Cooper and Jones go without blinking, we can find a FA WR/CB for a lot less

, coops is good but hes not thomas or Julio, Jones is Brandon Carr 2.0 is he good, yes , is he elite, no hes not getting Turnovers but these guys demanding to be market setters , I say goodbye.

Daks different in the FT can work to help buy us time so draft a 4th round qb , get a journeymen in case Dak holds out etc etc.. plans are needed daks not worth over 32 sorry, hes simply is not in my eye..if Jerry pays him fine ill support the guy, im not a hater, im a realist..

I'll continue to say what I've said in previous posts when it pertains to Dak. This team can/has won games with him here. He is just as capable as Dilfer, B. Johnson, etc. of going to and winning in the SB. Not sure this is even argument worthy if not for the price tag. 35+ mill is a hard pill, but it could very well happen regardless of fans' misgivings on the subject. Best we can do is make peace with it and hope that McCarthy can get the best out of him. Grooming guys behind him wouldn't hurt either

Paying Teddy Bridgewater 25 million is profoundly more stupid than paying Dak 35 million. Who would give TB that contract?

It’s a moot point since Bridgewater isn’t a free agent, but I would have no interest in him other than as a backup anyway.

I don’t want to hear the “5000 yards BS stat” because it means absolutely nothing. 5000 yards got us to 8-8.
That's not true.

Horrible coaching - situational, special teams and defense got us to 8-8 not the offense.

Dak obviously. 10mm a year really isn't much. Now if we got down to 15MM a year or so for Teddy then you have freed up real purchasing power.

I agree but do you think our first rounder nest year is a high pick?
