His natural ability or even his potential was never a question. His mental stability hindered his success more than anything. And now, years later he is just now coming to the realization that it's not all about him is just too late. He should have had that mentality in his prime. He can Tweet all he wants with videos of him catching passes with no legit NFL defense, it doesn't change the fact that the game has passed him by.
You know you mention his mental stability.

I used to get mad at him with his mental things, too.

Like that time he hurt his knee and he skipped his mandatory exam with the team doctor.

Later he admitted he was scared he had Injured it badly and too afraid to know the truth.

What a human emotion any of us might have had.

Shortly after that I found a video about his life and what he dealt with growing up watching his mother as a prostitute earning money to feed her family.

He talked about seeing strange men showing up at his house to do his mom and him being sent to his room where he would turn up the TV to drown out the noises.

Can any of us imagine this? Can we imagine the anger he grew up with from this?

I can't thank god.

But after seeing this video, I stopped being critical of him. I accepted him for who he was and was happy for his success however imperfect.

And as a guy who always wanted to be a Cowboy and still does..

what we need is another 52 like him and we could rule the NFL.

He and Witten and Romo were for years our whole team.

People that hate him are just confused.

They should be hating themselves for believing the snake oil Jerrah sold us for all those years.

It wasn't Dez's fault about his contract. Jerrah gave it to him freely.

It didn't work out. But the bile and vitiol..that is beneath us as loyal fans of the team.

I have begun now to see here on the Forum the same sort of screaming about Witten, another All Time Cowboy headed for the Hall of Fame.

Frankly you guys are starting to turn my stomach about this never ending dialog of negative opinions on some of our legendary best players who have contributed to our popularity so much.

Enough already.
Bryant was his own worst enemy man. He threatened to not play unless he got that huge contract which turned out to be a sort of waste because he failed to produce post contract.
So, it was his fault. And, under contract he still put himself before the team, on a few occasions. He was fun to watch but he eventually out kicked the coverage.

He had a broken foot in 2015 and a leg injury in 2016. His big issue that he has talked about pretty often is his mental health though.
Who wouldn’t have issues. Dude was picked apart for almost everything when he got here. Couldn’t even go through a normal interview with the dolphins without them disrespecting his mom. These players are humans beings too. Hopefully he’s worked on his issues. He definitely wasn’t perfect, but it ain’t easy when you’re always under a microscope. Just my opinion. I liked the dude and his passion.

Yea brother.
He could have been like a probowl level WR....
He could of been a Hall of Famer. I don't question his dedication and passion but Dez had alot of road blocks in his personal life. He had to deal with it in the offseason and I dont think he put all of his time in his craft. He put more into becoming a better man. I dont blame him for it for what he had to overcome.

People can say what they want about Dez. No one can doubt his love for the Dallas Cowboys.

His heart was never a question, it's how he handled things on the field that made me look away. I understand his life struggle and also am willing to see his mental struggles with depression etc.... But at some point you have to register that the NFL is a team sport and business. It doesn't always go the way you want. And my turning point was when he had meltdowns in games that hurt the team. He showed no composure and left his team to hang. The Seattle game 2017 was when I gave up. He complained all game long, not getting touches and when he did, he turned the ball over. Changed the game and we lost in a game at the time of his contributions, we were up 6-0. There are other examples of meltdowns.
I just think mentally he wasn't NFL equipped. And I will never hate on the man for how he was brought up. I will always wish him well. He was really fun to watch at times.

You bought the narrative the media sold you.
Show me 1 video where Dez was complaining over his individual stats and not trying to help the team.
The guy was being positive and trying to motivate and encourage his teammates to play better and the media decided to paint him out as another Ocho Cinco or TO type.

The guy shut his mouth and took all the criticism from the media and fans when things were not going well due to JG's scheme. Once he spoke an ounce of truth he was cut.

The very post you quoted is the very game you need to refresh yourself on. He did himself no favors, don't blame the media on this one. Watch that game! There's your video.

The "passion" excuse id awfully lame.

I was a huge fan until then and never was convinced of JG's scheme. But that doesn't change his actions and the fact that he's not played a snapped under another head coach.

No player walks off the field on his teammates before the game is over. It is not done and there is no excuse for it. It has only been done once in the history of the NFL. By a Cowboy.

Kind of reminds me of TO that has been wanting to return to the NFL for the last 9 year's. Dez is a better team guy though.

I would love to see Dez have a productive return to the NFL. He wasn't the same since his surgery so maybe the time off helps him. 31 isn't too old and deserves a tryout. Issue is how would he feel being the 4th WR in Dallas if he did come back here? Lol

Dez putting in work trying to make a comeback. I wish he had this same dedication earlier in his career. Imagine how good he could have been if he combined a work ethic with his natural ability.

Yea maybe he could’ve scored more TD’s than any WR in Cowboys history

Do you think he maximized his potential and was the best player he could have been?

If so, cool. Maybe I thought too highly of abilities.

If not, why be OK with wasted potential?

Even if what you say was the case, he still was really freaking good. If Jason Garrett wasn't his coach his entire career, imagine what a lot of our guys could have been.
