Big Mc, being a tight end in college, puts a lot of responsibility on the position. He is quoted as saying (while with the Packers),

"“The tight end position in this offense is difficult,” McCarthy said per Ryan Wood of PackersNews.com. “I think that goes understated, frankly. The tight end position, outside of the quarterback and the center and guards, the volume of responsibility is significant. Obviously, they have run-game responsibility. They’re multiple position players, so they have formation variation responsibility. So with that, they have characteristic traits being in the backfield, being out of the backfield, being extended as a receiver, and then obviously the pass game, route running and route-running principle responsibilities."

Likely not the last we'll hear about this position. Remember McCarthy also liked the Jumbo set in Green Bay.

Familiar name to Dallas fans is on the market. Geoff Swaim was released by the Jags (to save 3.7 mill).

I would try to trade for Njoku or sign Eifert to compete
with Jarwin. Otherwise bring in a guy like Kendricks or Swaim to backup.

I would have no problem with that, the Cowboys only have Jarwin and Schultz on the roster with NFL game experience, what happens if one of them is out with an injury and you want to go to a 12 personnel lineup? Guess you could patch in a backup o-line guy, or put a wr in that spot, but they're not going to able to do all Jarwin or Schultz can. The o-line guy isn't going to be as fast and the wr isn't able to block like a te.

Not a great draft for tight ends apparently, Walter Football doesn't list a single prospect that will go in the first round! But considering the Cowboys are planning a run-first offense, I'd take somebody who's big and physical for blocking (which can be learned) in later rounds...

Parham should be signed by the Cowboys as soon as Monday. Daryl "Moose" Johnson is pimping him to Jerry.

now that Witten has left the building, TE just seems glaring.

The importance for Dak to have a TE with some thump just seems clear watching Dak for 4 seasons with Witten.Jason had like 65 catches for only 600 yds and 3 TDs.
The need was honestly glaring even when he was in the building. He wasn't any good anymore.

Rounding his total up from 529 to 600 is a little misleading in downplaying his futility. He averaged 8.4 yards per catch. That's pitiful. And not at all hard to replace.

If you look at the pace Geoff Swaim was on in 2018 before his season-ending injury, he was on pace for a season with 46 catches, 430 yards, 9.3 avg, and 1.7 TDs. That's honestly close to Witten's production considering he'd have managed that production on about 30 fewer targets in that scenario. If you extrapolate his production basing it on targets to see what it would look like if we forced him the ball as often as we forced it to Witten, giving him 83 targets? Swaim's numbers would look like this: 67 catches, 627 yards, 2.5 TD, 28 first downs (Witten had 27 first downs in 2019, FYI). Eerily similar to Witten, and better in some ways. That's what Witten's 2019 season was for us. It was like we decided to build an offense around forcing the football to a 2nd or 3rd string TE like Geoff Swaim.

How about Jarwin, though? Well, we could smush together his 2018 and 2019 seasons to arrive at a stat line in which he has 77 targets, which is in the same ballpark as the ludicrous 83 we forced Witten's way last year. How do Jarwin's numbers look with those 77 targets? An easy step up from Witten: 58 catches, 672 yards, 11.6 avg, 6 TD, 36 first downs.

So, we've already easily replaced and upgraded Witten in the starting lineup.

Now, if an even better TE weapon falls in our laps in the draft somewhere? Great. Any improvement over Jarwin would be gravy. And having a backup better than Schultz should also be a priority anyway.

Witten was never fast, and even slower now, obviously.

However his numbers last year were down mostly because he was Dak's safety valve/security blanket and used simply to get some yards to salvage a play that wasn't going to work because the receivers weren't open or the pressure was getting close to Dak. He wasn't probably even the no. 3 option, but since he was nearly always open he got a fair amount of throws.

Guess we'll see if he was able to help Jarwin or Schultz learn how to get equally open, and how he does with the Raiders. Have a hard time believing the Raiders ponied up nearly $5 million for a washed up tight end as an emergency backup or "coach on the field"...

So when I look at positions of importance that are being bandaged on this team..

now that Witten has left the building, TE just seems glaring.

I just do not think signing Jarwin is nearly enough and while he got a 3 year deal, the details of his deal says it's voidable after the first year.

So I want to look at prospects to consider. The importance for Dak to have a TE with some thump just seems clear watching Dak for 4 seasons with Witten.Jason had like 65 catches for only 600 yds and 3 TDs.

With Cobb being gone, that's almost 900 yds.additionally missing.

More is needed.

I already mentioned in another thread about Parham from the XFL.

Let's get started. I will add more or you guys can add as well.

There is a possible out for the Cowboys after the 2021 season His contract is fully guaranteed for 2020 and 2021. I agree that at some point the Cowboys may look to find a blocking TE but not as any top priority. Jarwin playing as a 2nd TE in the 2 TE formations had 3 TD's last season as many as Witten as the #1 TE. He had more than half of what Witten had in yardage as the #2 TE. Cobb , where as I would have liked it if the Cowboys could have kept him, you're acting like the Cowboys won't have a slot receiver so there will be no slot receiver yards there. The players from the XFL are mostly retreads that were released by NFL teams already or younger players who may have had tryouts with NFL teams but didn't make teams. If lucky there may be a VERY small handful of XFL players that will get invites to be camp bodies in training camps. If those XFL players were good enough to be in the NFL they would be in the NFL and not had to settle for the XFL.

Bad draft class to need a TE. I just hope there are some diamonds that need polished in there somewhere.
I was doing mock drafts and seen one available in the 7th round. His name is Jake Breeland from Oregon and has huge upside. Needs developing but was used as blocker, used in the slot and all over the offense. I'm going to watch some tape on him later to get a better view of what he can do.

Informative post.

Thanx for doing all that number crunching.

I personally don't dig that stuff. The fantasy guys go that route and they communicate that stuff well.

I just go by how I see and feel. Don't need Google to watch football..just me. Go to the frig for a beer and sandwich is about my speed for extra research.

And rounding Witten's and Cobb's numbers not to mislead but to be quick. Somebody will scream any second I am LYING to make a point. Yikes.

I use one finger to keyboard on my phone, not both hands like the newer generation. So..

I don't see much arguement on Jarwin except to say he just is not a guy that excites me nor does he threaten anybody.

He does not block and I have yet to see him make catches with DBs hanging off him..

not seen him drag 2 or 3 DBs across the GL.
He is usually just standing in an open area where the DBs forgot him.

That does not click my dingle berries much.

Our best QBs always had great TEs to exploit the other team. I will not bore you with whom.

You know what I'm saying. Having to squeeze blood from turnip TEs is a waste of time.

Two years ago, the team was questioning Dak becuz he had no #1 WR, needed one to evaluate him and they got him one in Amari at great expense and he improved.

This year, we are going to see Dak struggle some more.

Why?

Becuz we do not have the QB/TE battery completed.

Aaron Rodgers has knocked us out of 2 huge games recently becuz his TEs took our top off the defense and won heroically. Built somemore of his legend on us as a result.

Philly killed us and bounced us out of the playoffs in 2019 with not WRs, but TEs.

Etc.

Now that is OUR deficiency on defense showing. But it pictures what we lack in not having the right personnel.

So believe what want, tweak and circle numbers..fine.

But I still don't see us being elite until we fix it.

Over to thou.

It's not like his numbers last year were an anomaly to explain away. They are what they are. He's been getting worse for awhile.

After a long stretch (2004 through 2014) where he was a bizarrely consistent 11-point-something yards per catch guy, age caught up with him and he started his tumble. He went from getting 11-something per catch to a couple years of 9-something and then a season finally down in the 8's. At which point he accepted he was no longer a good enough player to keep doing this and he retired. But because he was so bad at his post-retirement career pursuit, he came back and his average dipped even lower to 8.4 yards per catch.

I think Jason would've had more value if we stuck to the original plan to limit his snap count. First off, it would've lessened the workload for his body and his slow wheels, so he could pick and choose his spots a bit better and stay fresher. Might've kept his average from falling so pitifully low. Maybe he could've kept it up in the high 8's or even back up into the 9's if he had fresher legs and spent less time fighting with people in a blocking role he's no longer good at anyway. But also, the young TE who should've been starting would have benefited from getting to try on the starting role while he still had Witten around to pick his brain and benefit from his guidance. If we had stuck to the original plan to limit his snaps, I think Witten would've been more effective when he did play and our offense would have benefited from having the better player on the field more.

The Raiders, by the way, have a 27-year old TE who gave them 1100 yards and 12+ yards per catch last year. They have even less use for Witten as a #1 TE than we do.

Which means they signed him because they see what I see, that Witten's actual value--and it's not insubstantial--is almost entirely as a lockerroom leader (so anyone who cares to learn can observe and see how he conducts himself in the gym and in the weight room and in the film room and during practices) who offers guidance for the superior young TE starting ahead of him. And occasionally he gets to get in there as a backup TE in 2-TE packages or heavy goalline packages and see if he can tack on a handful of touchdowns to his career total.

I agree no one is scared of Jarwin at this point and there's room to find a better TE than him.

I don't point out that Jarwin's a more effective weapon than Witten to make the case that we've solved the TE position and so now we can put it on cruise control.

I want them to keep turning over stones and improving the TE options. A scenario where Jarwin is back to being relegated to being our #2 TE but this time it's because someone legitimately better than him is our #1? That would be great.

These guys are big WRs. Guys may have to rethink what a TE responsibilities..the days of the blockers might be coming to an end.

These dudes got routes, and be slot WRs for DAL, but so could Jarwin. 2 TE sets could be effective in the passing game.

With the team signing Jarwin to a long-term contract, he is the team's new #1 starting TE. Due to lack of numbers, you would think they draft another at the position, probably in that late 2, early 3rd day range.

Charles Clay, Tyler Eifert, Jordan Reed, Luke Stocker, Geoff Swaim, Delanie Walker

So Geoff Swaim come on down? In all seriousness Walker, Divert, and Reed are all intriguing options. All are unemployed due to injury concerns, but would take a 1 year flyer on any of those 3.
