With Mcgovern moving to C most likely does it create a need at G? I guess Knight and Looney can both fill in in a pinch but I can't see either being long term solutions. Then there is Redmond but I have no idea what he can do.

At T Knight and Hyatt appear to be the depth and I guess in an extreme situation Williams could fill in with Looney at G.

Which do you think we need? G, T, both, neither?

Why id it a given that MG can play center at a high level? He did it one year in college, thats it. MG will most likely will get s chance to backup looney at center if he cant beat williams out at guard. That makes the most sense gor a guy who hasnt played in the nfl before.

They supposedly had a 2nd round grade on Mcgovern. I would think he has the inside track to the starting lineup.

- If Williams ends up returning at LG, and McGovern proves advanced enough to start at center, depth would be needed at the backup swing OT role.
- Looney can definitely fill in at center in a heartbeat. and he filled in at LG when both Williams and Sua Filo were out for season.
So he adds very solid depth in the interior at both positions.
- It remains to be seen if Knight will be asked to play both OG and swing T.
- Andy Redmon returns very raw and inexperience but hear say they really like his potential.
- Hyatt even struggled against scrub edge rushers on the roster bubble in preseason, maybe this Packer style coaching staff thinks he can be
typical Packer style Olineman that relies on techniques and guts. He'll have to show me much more improvement than what i saw his rookie year.
The only reason Knight played OG last season was that they had injuries and he volunteered, trying to do whatever needed to make the squad. Which he did.

And on Redmond - He like other OL needed to get more strength.

Guard is more important since they can help inside (new Center) or outside were we are set with Smith and Collins.

the more versatile you are to flex and swing to play other positions, the more it opens up opportunies for one to be game day active.
that spells out two to three backup Olinemen on Sundays, ..the other ones usually have to be declared inactive (ala Sua Filo) until there's
another injury that changes the scenario otherwise.

Trust in the McCarthy System over the Garrett System of requiring high draft pick/All-Pro talent on the OL. LT and RT is obviously important but we have two high-paid players there. Tyron's durability is a concern long-term but you can't waste a valuable resource on replacing him just yet.

As for guards, those should be the most replaceable/plug-and-play positions in football. A great guard like Martin is nice but is it a necessity to have one or can you plug in some average starters and scheme/playcall to make them work in a successful system? Just look at the Chiefs and 49ers in the Super Bowl - most people probably couldn't even name their starting guards off the top of their head.

Center is a very key position. Pick one up in rounds 3-4. Leave McGovern at OG as he is now the only legit guy there behind the starters.

right tackle..move Lalel Collins to LG , draft Jackson the big LT from USC and call it a day. So Jackson, Collins, Looney, Martin, and the right tackle can be Connor Williams.

Yes they had a second-round grade at him at guard not center. so to say that he might start at left guard would make sense he will certainly compete for the left guard starting spot but I'm not willing to say that he can start over Looney at center as he's only played one year at center.

You missed the obvious biggest need.

Honestly at this point, I don’t know if our best option isn’t to draft a guard early and use McGovern at C and Williams as a swing tackle.

Nope need to draft a guard especially with Center position in flux.

A guard can help inside to Center or outside to the Tackles, you solve 2 problems with 1 solution.
Opinion noted. Center isnt in flux you have 2 just like last year.Just because Tfred retired doesn't mean you have to do things all that different. you just resigned Looney and you have McGovern. Im more concerned with TSmiths aging back but I understand the principle you said

I’m going to go with tackle. Tyron is bound to miss 3-4 games. At some point probably will average even more. Back issues are not something you easily play through. Could Connor be a swing tackle for either side? Sure. I think we have a lot of guys that can be interchanged on interior spots. You can play shell game with all of them at guard and center.

Where I would prefer to see them go is get a bona fide tackle in the draft or possibly in free agency. An understudy for Tyron. Who can also play RT. Have that player and Connor be our tackle depth. Then our interior can be fine with McGovern, Looney, Redman, Martin and even Connor if needed.
