I hear Aldon Smith's contract is a $2M base with $2M in incentives. Who can complain about that?

Crawford should get about the same contract. I am thinking $1M base with $3M in incentives.

The valid criticism isn't about the money. It's about the Cowboys apparently going into the season counting on Gregory and Smith to fill key roles on the defense.

If you take Randy Gregory's career year and multiply it by 3 you're in Aldon's territory.

Having said that I wouldn't invest the time in either one.

Dorance Armstrong has got to be beyond pissed. All he does when he is on the field is produce...yet...he's always being tried to be replaced. Wouldn't shock me if he asks for his release.

Last I checked, the Cowboys are relying on some guy named DeMarcus Lawrence and another vet named McCoy.

Yea but don’t forget there is a draft coming in a few weeks. Then after that more salary shedding cuts. It’s how we got Quinn the last time remember?

So you just didn't understand what he was saying. That's not surprising.

He compared their off field issues in defense of Gregory. The problem is they aren't the same player. One was actually good. The other was just a pot smoking roster filler. So it's completely irrelevant to compare them in any way, shape or form.

You dig, Quincy?

Why do you keep dragging this on? Yes the freaking tweet even says they aren't comparable(dont lump in the same capacity) Aldon has been a nightmare off the field whereas Gregory has had one prominent issue.

You didn't understand the tweet and that's okay. We are used to things going right over your head. Just let it be, don't dig yourself any deeper.

You dig, brittany?

With Aldon Smith agreeing to a contract, he is the fourth former first-round pick the Cowboys have added in free agency so far, joining Gerald McCoy (2010), Dontari Poe (2012)and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix (2014). Smith was the seventh pick in the 2011 draft. The Cowboys are following philosophy they have held over years in bringing in players who at one time teams liked greatly. Smith is a risk but likely mitigated by the financial commitment.

So your saying that you never saw any upside, talent, in Gregory,,no ceiling?
Smith busted out of the turnstiles as soon as he was drafted, its rare to see that type of immediate impact, even from a first round talent, that quickly.

Randy Gregory has never been a quality pass rusher. When he talks about his golden years in the NFL he mentions his 6 sack season.

A vastly overrated player around here. His next good season will be his first.
He’s got bend. His traits pop at times.

Probably needs change of scenery tho

I can't wait for him to ball for us and all the fickle posters here pretending they liked the move from the beginning. Give him a chance people jeesh.

I like to hope for the best. Doesn't mean I expect it, but nothing would be better for Smith, if he has gotten his life on track, than to experience NFL success again. If he does it in Dallas, all the better.

Quinn is another irresponsible drunk. And what happened after Dallas signed him...He got suspended for taking steroids.

I am still processing this.

Aldon Smith was a beast in his first three seasons and then the wheels started to come off for him. His last two seasons, he wasn't good but he also was in a downward spiral that eventually ended with him out of the league.

He's 30 yrs old and hasn't played football in nearly five years. That's also time that he hasn't had the wear and tear on his body.

Will he still have the strength and burst that made him a great player? I don't know.

At the price he's signed- no guaranteed money, 2 million base salary with incentives that push to 4, it's a decent gamble. If he's not reinstated or cut in camp, the Cowboys are out little. If he makes camp, but he is simply a rotational player, then his 2 million doesn't prohibit or hurt anything. If he's good enough to earn the four million, it is likely a great signing.

There's no indication that this will affect how we draft at all.

And the money doesn't keep us from further addressing the position.

Can't see much to not like here.

With Jim Tomsula here, I think it's probably more about him wanting to give a player who was a star under him another shot. You know, though, it doesn't take much to convince Jerry in these situations.

I'd be a lot more concerned if it was just some player the Joneses targeted who had no ties to this coaching staff.

So I guess the Mike McCarthy had nothing to say about it? Just Jerry rolling snake eyes again? Oh wait Mike McCarthy brought Tomsula into the fold and he more than likely had positives on Aldon Smith. This looks like a collective management and coaching decision getting Aldon Smith on board.

It doesn't matter, Qwinthy. What one has done vs the other is irrelevant. Just like Jimmy Johnson preached years ago before you fell in love with the Cowboys in 2001. When you're actually a good player you'll get more slack.

It was a terrible comparison. You should play checkers with whoever tweeted that. You might win.

Well I didn’t expect a guy that hasn’t played since 2015 being signed - I don’t think this counts lol!
Nothing surprises me. Remember a few years ago when they signed a defensive lineman who had been in a coma for 12 months?

Aldon could be a good influence on Gregory. Looks like he's seriously turned himself around.
“Aldon has been sober for a while and he’s been helping a lot of our vets with their sobriety.”
That's really good stuff there brother,, I would love to read more if you got it,, being real here.
I hadn't read about the Vet help,, that means a lot as far as his character, and his rehab.

I wrote:
Gregory was a quality pass rusher in the back half of 2018, once he had played himself into shape.

5 sacks in half a year is good.
