Randall Cobb played 712 of 1129 offensive snaps last year which is just under 65% of snaps. You can't have a scrub fill that role, it's too big and would be hugely detrimental to the offense. I'm supportive of the argument that we can extract more value out of a corner, DE or 3T in the first round...and I agree but we can get through the season with the options we have in those positions, we can't get through the season with Devon Smith as our starting SWR.

If WR is the obvious best player available we should take them, otherwise I think it has to be addressed in either the 2nd or 3rd round.

I believe the team will target these positions with top 3 selections, in no particular order; RE, CB, WR

My guess at 17 is they will either go DB or Wideout based on how the draft unfolds. They have scenarios in place to get the postion they didn't draft in the first, later in the draft. Widouts --- 1st round batch (Jeudy/Lamb/Ruggs) vs Later in draft (Pitmman/Hamler/Duvernay)

People also need to take into account the offense will be more pass-first under Mike McCarthy than it was under Jason Garrett. Expect a lot of three & four WR sets. Also, Cobb was decent, but he still left a lot to be desired. A better WR could easily eclipse his 712 snaps. Slot receiver is a starter in today’s NFL, especially in our offense. It’s absolutely our biggest need. That’s without even taking into consideration the injury history to Cooper & Gallup and the overall lack of depth behind them.

If you draft a guy like say Lamb or Pittman, you will probably see alot of Cooper in the slot

That's not ideal but it's a better solution than having Devon Smith on the field. I'd put Mimms in the same category as well.

The other thing is when you look at his contract Cooper is still on a prove it deal. If he doesn't prove it we'll need two WRs down the road and with the depth at the position in this draft it would be nice to get one or two this year so they can bring them along. I think Van Jefferson might be there in the third round and could compete in his first year for the slot position.

Overview
Versatile, skilled receiver who has played all three receiver spots but is likely to do most of his damage from the slot. Jefferson has average size and won't run away from quality man coverage, but he will separate from it with premium route-running and unique looks and angles that keep cornerbacks on their heels. He needs to prove he can deal with NFL size and strength banging on him at the catch point. Jefferson is a pro-ready receiver whose skill level and competitive nature outweigh average explosiveness and he should find quick work as a WR3/WR4.

I agree it’s a need just don’t think it’s our biggest need. Also happy take a WR in the 1st if Lamb or Juedy fall just don’t see anyone else worth the pick.

I think the 3rd is where we’re going to have good options and see the most value.

It's not the position we need to allocate the most resources but it is absolutely the biggest need. We cannot send a scrub out to play 700 snaps on our offense.

I agree, but we signed Cobb cheap and he was solid last year.

Without looking I have no idea what FAs might be available but the draft is loaded and I honestly believe we can replace his production with a mid round WR.

3rd WR is a huge need, I agree. But RDE/edge is far and away our biggest need. Followed by corner and center.

I like a lot of these receivers, and think many of them would fit the role in the 3rd or 4th round.

If the draft fell right for me, it's go Chaisson, Gladney, Biadasz, KJHill

biggest needs IMO

1. CB1 - Awuzie covering the Michael Thomas's of the world? No thanks!
2. S - Woods and Clinton Dix both on 1 year deals and Woods strikes me as the type that will want to be wildly overpaid.
3. DE - So many unknowns.
4. LB - A bunch of 1 year deals, a broken neck and a half firing nerve.
5. QB - There is no universe where Rush should be the primary back up.
6. DT - A heavy rotation position and bodies are needed.
7. CB again - only one under contract next year.
8. IOL - Guard or C needed for depth
9 Swing OT - Knight and Hyatt unproven.

WR - I don't mean to minimize the need but there are so many options.
1. Devin Smith, Cedric Wilson, Noah Brown, lenoir
2. Dez for cheap
3. a bunch of quality in the draft and what no one considers
4. With a huge influx of new receivers some quality vets will be released.
