Would You rather pay Dak $40m or spread it around on defense?

I've never seen Dak carry the team...never! Be a game manager/bus driver yes (and that is not always a bad thing but it is who he is) Defense still only gave up 17 points (on the road in that game at Philly) Dak should have been able to put at least that much up or in a worst case scenario get us a couple of TD's. We must have been watching vastly different SB games because i saw Mahomes make big play after big play when he needed to in that 4th quarter to win the game, and just because the D got him the ball back doesn't mean they scored for him, it's not like they got him the ball back on the 49's goal line

I guess we will just have to disagree with Dak never carrying the team. But, that's cool. We don't have to agree on everything. I agree Dak should have put up some points in the Philly game. Having said that, there were some costly penalties, fumbles, and dropped balls which killed drives. The entire offense just wasn't that good during the game.

As far as the SB, the KC defense didn't allow the Niners offense to do anything for about the last 18 minutes of that game. They also got the ball back into Mahomes hands, which allowed their offense to orchestrate a come from behind win. If the defense hadn't stepped up, and let the Niners score, while using up the clock, the win wouldn't have happened. My whole point being, It's a team sport. One guy doesn't win or lose a game by himself.

If it weren't Dak, the Cowboys were trying to overpay, it would be someone else. Sure we can sign a different veteran on a cheaper deal but if that works out after a short deal, we will be right back where we are right now to get that QB signed on a long term deal. If you don't want to go the veteran QB route, what is the alternative? Do you think drafting a new young QB on a rookie contract is the answer? The team is too good elsewhere to be mailing it in because we want to get a great draft position to draft a good young QB every 5 years. That's not the answer either.

The premise of the OP is just a false narrative. Operating a professional football team on a carousel of so-so QBs year after year is not the way to do it. The Cowboys proved this during the Campo, Gailey, and Parcells years until Romo arrived. You have to have a QB that you can consistently rely on to give your team a chance. When you're the Dallas Cowboys, and its time to negotiate because you think you have found that guy, he's going to get overpaid to agree to a long term deal. There is no skipping that to spread that money around elsewhere. In today's era of pass-happy offenses, having a top 5 QB is a must. You have to pay that guy accordingly.

But it was Garrett wasting his career isn't that correct? How many HC has Dak played under and who was the HC? People use a scape goat in protecting Romo yet Dak played under the same HC, they same system yet it is all his fault? lol ok
Yes Dak is looking for a contract and right now we hear many things many appear not to be true. In my view a deal will get done and I have no doubt within a couple of years Dak contract will be middle of the road for QB's

My point is that its the same for both Romo and Dak…..neither side of the argument can use it as an argument.

What's irrelevant is what happened to Romo.

If I made a mistake today, that justifies me making the same mistake tomorrow?

And since 2017 was way back in the dark ages, his statistics cannot be used for comparison, is that your point?
If so, sorry but I have to disagree.

Correct, there should be no comparison...different era and different financial circumstances.

The bottom line is that for flexibility JJ wants Dak to take a longer contract.

Pay Dak the $40-45M he's so selfishly demanding or spread that cash around on the defense???

Imagine the players we could acquire for that kind of coin!!

dallas-signs-qb-andy-dalton-to-1-year-deal-1000x600.jpg

Please, Jerry!!! Please just let Dak walk for nothing and roll Dalton, then go out and spend that money on an ELITE defense...

Try to justify it anyway you can, but Dak simply does not embody the heart and attitude of a true Dallas Cowboys' QB1 - it's a privilege, and he doesn't have any business in that roll - to bad, he isn't able to look past his covetous desires as necessary to build up the entire TEAM, so he might actually win a SB..

Anyone who actually believes Dak wants a SB has got to have serious issues - he's obviously only concerned with one thing: his money, and grubbing for every single dirty penny he can steal from the team...

Please, Jerry - eliminate the problem NOW. Show all the players that being a Dallas Cowboy means more than worshiping money; instead, guys like Troy knew exactly what it being the DC QB1 is really all about - WINNING...

well, the 40 number is completely made up. Why didn’t you put down 50? Maybe 100! We could spread 100m around pretty good

but, before you start your shopping spree on defense you would need to give at least 17m to Dalton on top of the 3m he’s guaranteed

He was paid to be a backup. You can’t just fire the starter before the season even starts and then point at Dalton and say “HAHA!!! SUCKER!!!l

all QB's these days get stupid money. Fair or not, that's the market value. Dak just threw for almost 5k yards lol..and you wanna replace him? Holy cow.
Well, then maybe it's time for a market adjustment. Defense wins championships. A great defense will give your offense more opportunities to score. He may have put up nearly 5k yards last year but, he was only 1-6 against good teams. Pay for an elite defense first!

I don't think signing Dak is a waste. Nor did I feel Romo was a waste. I think Dak continues to grow and develop as a QB. I have seen what a crappy QB looks like, Dallas went through that for years after Aikman, Dak in my view is a very good QB who can help lead this team. Anyone thinking QB is easy position to fill has a short memory

like it or not, the road to the big dance requires a top qb and a great backup in the event of an injury. since top qb's are as rare as blue diamonds, they're going to get the lion's share of the pie. sucks for the rest of the team, but it's just reality in today's nfl.

Whilst agreeing with the sentiment, it would be more likely that we'd draft a QB in 2021, MM then gets who he likes.

So he passed for near 5,000 yards for an 8-8 team.....of course that deserves a huge new contract.

Romo passed for near 5000 yards for an 8-8 team. Hard to overcome poor coaching an inconsistent defense that can’t tackle, make critical 3rd down stops and doesn’t force turnovers. We wouldn’t have won 4-5 games with lesser QBs on those teams.

There was nothing wrong with Doomsday's comparison, you just didn't like the results because it wasn't critical of Dak.
Sorry, but the truth is what it is.

Maybe he's already got who he likes, assuming Dak signs a contract or the tag.

Sorry, but the truth is what it is.

From my position on the fence (see my signature below) that's what really gets me about some of the Dak supporters.

1) No objectivity whatsoever
2) Cannot construct a rational argument to the concern that the issue with negotiation is potentially about length of contract and payroll flexibility.
3)Continually making spurious comparisons to a player that retired 3 years ago.
4) Continue with the standpoint of "PAY HIM REGARDLESS", "PAY HIM WHAT HE WANTS", "IF IT WAS ROMO THEY WOULD HAVE PAID HIM".... I can see the business acumen isn't high on some fans agenda.

Too many fans are polarised on this issue and unprepared to give anything ….. which is always an issue in negotiations. I doubt you've got this far as probably think i'm opposing your view and already writing your response.

Who are we going to spend the money on? Will there be complaints they are overpaid like DLaw?

The financial position going into 2021is such that we'll be hard pressed to resign our pending FA's let alone sign big FA's.

Now some of that blame goes to JJ for not employing a GM that curtails his stupid brash contracts (Amari, DLaw and Zeke) which leaves little room for flexibility.....however....

Dak can meet him half way and take a back loaded contract to assist with flexibility....but he wants another shot at FA in next couple of years to maximise his money (a position he's created by not accepting any form of extension last year).

First, yes I do support Dak, but NOT unconditionally.
1) You're jumping to conclusions prematurely.
2) We don't know for certain what exactly the negotiating sticking points are, it's mostly speculation and hearsay.
3) You're really reaching on that one. First, 3 years ago for the comparison Doomsday was making means nothing. Second, Dak's critics have no problem with comparisons or any other kind of material they feel supports their narrative, so I have no problem with Doomsday's comparison.
4) I do not support the the standpoint of "PAY HIM REGARDLESS", or "PAY HIM WHAT HE WANTS".
I don't support overpaying Dak any more than I supported overpaying Zeke or DLaw. I like Dak and at this point I think Dak is our best option, but I also hope Jerry sticks to his guns and does not cave.

I consider myself somewhat middle of the road with Dak. Like I said, I like him but I don't think he's worth the kind of money they say he's pushing for. Neither do I agree with the so called Dak haters who want Dak gone at all costs. If he plays under the tag for a year, we'll see how he does. If they work out an agreement, I just hope Dak proves to be worth it.
If he stays, I'm gonna root for him because he's a Cowboy. If he goes, I'm just going to hope for the best.

Hang on, its your assumption that " you just didn't like the results because it wasn't critical of Dak".

Its that kind of comment thats:

1) Incorrect - i'm middle of the road like yourself.
2) Indicates a quick fire reactionary approach to any comment they think is anti-Dak.

Its the posters that think EVERYTHING must support Dak (even stupid comparisons to what the Cowboys have done with contracts in the past).

All that matters is the here and now.

Apart for that I totally agree with the post.
