Stashed away in Year 1, Cowboys DE Jelks could emerge in 2020

Right. And I'm not asking to be argumentative I just honestly can't think of many guys on that side of the football. But I can list you a bunch of guys who we "stashed" just to go on and do nothing.

Who knows Jelks may be the exception here but it doesn't seem like you stash a guy who's ready to contribute for you but maybe he can be a special teams guy and depth guy. Still would be solid if he is even good on special teams.
It's rare for any player on any team to become a good player after being stashed. Most good players are known quantities, even if they're not ready they're usually kept on the roster.

Drawing a blank.

Has anyone ever been stashed away and gone on to have a good career? Genuine question.

Not sure what difference that would make.

The point is, it's rare, I agree w/ you.
Wasn’t really making a point. I was asking a genuine question. Thought maybe I missed a guy because I honestly couldn’t think of anyone on defense.

The only player I can think of off the top of my head that ever emerged after being stashed away in year one with an injury was Ken Norton Jr. I believe he made it to the third game of the regular season before being injured.

Ken Norton was a second round pick who everyone knew could play. Jelks..........not so much. Norton is more like what we did with Sean Lee and Jaylon Smith.

Hmmm I honestly don’t remember how he started. So I’ll take your word for it. Seems like he fit the type being a mid round defensive linemen who came on later in his career.
I thought of him, but by "stashed" I was supposing you meant made available to the rest of the NFL, as in on the PS. I don't think Hatch ever hit the PS.

We stupidly tried to stash Matt Moore and got caught.

Norton didn’t arrive injured or with an injury history like Lee and Smith. He also didn’t have a first round grade like Lee and Smith who fell into the second round because of injuries.

I thought he was sort of stashed at one point, but I may be mistaken.

Oh, it seems I may be mistaken about Hatcher: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Hatcher#Professional_career

Dallas Cowboys[edit]
Hatcher was drafted in the 3rd round (92nd overall) of the 2006 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. His selection at the time was questioned because of his lack of production in college, but the team was high on his athletic ability and potential for their 3–4 defense.

As a rookie, Hatcher played in 14 games, missing two with a sprained ankle. For the season, he recorded 13 tackles, one for a loss and 2.5 sacks. In 2007, he played in all 16 games and recorded 35 tackles, three for losses and two sacks, while forcing one fumble. In 2008, Hatcher recorded 36 tackles, one for a loss, one pass broken up and one sack. In 2009, he played in all 16 games and recorded 29 tackles, one sack and one pass breakup.

For the most part of his career with the Cowboys, Hatcher was a reserve player (his first start was in 2010) and seen as a disappointment, until he re-signed with the team in 2011 after not receiving much interest in the free agent market. That season with the arrival of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, he established himself as one of the team starters at defensive end, ahead of Marcus Spears and improved his overall play, compiling a career high in tackles (36) and sacks (4.5).

Looks like he did see action during his rookie year. I thought he was more stashed though at first. And it states he was a reserve player for the most part, so that may be what I was thinking. It wasn't until Rob Ryan came along that he became a starter for us.

Me neither, and that would've been Parcells' last season here. I suppose it must've been in support roles. I can't remember when he actually played until Rob Ryan got here to be honest.
He was a good reserve under Wade. Had a really good year in 2009. Had almost 30 pressures

I liked tha kid from the get go....Ima pullin for him. Hopefully another strong rotational cat at least.

I'm team Anae right now. Jelks is intriguing but I'm just over old regime projects even if only here for a short time

It would be nice to hit on one of these mid to late round guys for once. I was tired of the Russell and Tapper and Gardner type, maybe even Jelks and Jackson also. That they draft then gloat how they got great value. Because they played out of position or the scheme was not right. Though the jury is still out on the latter two.

As for the DT spots remember Bishop, Ivie, Carrell?

Maybe the new regime gets this one right.

Jelks has the measurables.

Really his "measurables" are classic Marinelli measurables.

Here's what Garrett said in the link to the piece provided by the OP :
" He’s big, long, athletic, plays with a relentless spirit, great motor, great energy, around the ball a lot."

Is that not classic Rod Speak?

Measureables:

  1. Height 6' 5⅜" 88
  2. Weight 256 lbs 26
  3. Wingspan 83" 93
  4. Arm Length 34⅝" 86
  5. Hand Size 9⅝" 31
  6. 40 Yard Dash 4.92s 26
  7. Vertical Jump 32½" 43
  8. Broad Jump 113" 40
  9. 3-Cone Drill 7.22s 47
  10. 20 Yard Shuttle 4.59s 15
  11. Bench Press 19 reps 16

He only was above the 50% avg. in 3 categories .... height, wingspan, and arm length ... Classic Marinelli search criteria
