How long can the Cowboys' popularity momentum last?

Pretend for a moment that you're Jerry Jones, sitting and ruminating in your office as you gaze at the memorabilia on the walls.

Your Cowboys have the most followers on Facebook, the highest TV ratings, the most fans, the most revenue, the highest value, but they are really, just, coasting on.......something. They're coasting on the greatness of the past.

They won 5 Super Bowls.......but even the most recent was a quarter-century ago.

They've won playoff games........but only three in the past 23 years.

They have a big and great stadium, but that stadium is 11 years old, and plenty of teams have nice new stadiums these days.

They have a nice-looking uniform and helmet, but that's subjective anyway, and so do some other teams.

At a certain point, this momentum is bound to run out. How long can this continue before eventually the Cowboys see their TV ratings slipping, their value crashing, the revenue crashing, fans no longer following on Facebook, before the Cowboys become just another team, one out of 32, no more recognizable or care-about-able than any of the other 31? The youngest generation of NFL fans already cares relatively little for Dallas or about Dallas.

Using a glider as an analogy, you can glide really far by getting an immensely strong boost at the beginning, but sooner or later you're going to start to dip and crash as that momentum peters out. Are we nearing it?

I don’t see it crashing anytime soon. Most fans are fans and stay fans. Even though some may sway and follow a 2nd team, off and on. But many will be back.
What may happen is the young fans will tend to follow the winning teams.

Look at the Detroit Lions, it still seems their stadium is full, fans seem to be just as passionate.
Same for other teams.
Look how long Saints and TB fans hung in there. And got rewarded for with SB wins for it.
Browns, they were heart broken when they left and came back with a passion when announced they were getting a new team, same as the old team.

the fan base is strong, and will remain that way for years.
It will dwindle when the entire NFL dwindles.

Appreciate the nice original post. My answer is I don't have one. The mystery to Jerry's continuing marketing empire seems a closely guarded and encrypted secret that has yet to be decoded.

Maybe it's all the "extra" garnish that comes with the stadium that keeps it steaming along these days. What I mean by that is maybe all the concerts, fights, monster truck events and college games just help to further people's subconscious mind that this venue is in fact the home to a professional football team. The Dallas Cowboys.

Bout all I got cuz the product on the field can't be what's selling.

On another note,. I don’t know how many times, as I am sure many others have to.
Remember the saying...only if I had a nickel for every time I heard blah blah blah.

Well, how many times did you hear...well I was a Cowboys fan until Landry was fired.
I used to tell them, then you are a fair weather fan, you are looking for a team that wins, because they been losing.

But man, after winning SB 27, they sure seemed to like them again.

The other events there people go to regardless where ever it is, but I am sure there are those that go to see a concert, as it is a chance to also see the stadium on a cheaper night of spending than a game. But some concert tickets are as much as an upper level seat at a game.

It if that concert was at some theatre type place, they would still go.

most of the people at the games, are from season tickets holders, rather they go or sell the tickets. And someone is always willing to pay the price. Especially if it is a one time thing for them.
I am not sure what the % of seats are season ticket holders, but when I first got mine they were pushing 80%.
So that is guaranteed money and fans in the seats.

as a comparison for prices of a game vs. a concert.
My seats, when I had them. Sold them in 2016. They were 1st row club seats, 20 yard line, $340 a seat. I think they are now $375, or near that. A concert ticket at the House of Blues upper side level in Vegas cost me $180 to see Santana back in January.
Nothing is cheap.

Unfortunately it doesn’t appear we are nearing it.

Jerry has proven that continued success on the field isn’t necessarily needed for success off the field.

As long as they stick to the proven formula, the Cowboys will remain relevant without winning SBs. Classic color scheme & logo, compelling story on key players, strong O-line and running game, potential big-play passing game, and an above-average defense that surges into the realm of the elite every so many years. Fans want to care about the players on their team. If the players aren't likable the team doesn't stand a chance on the fan's loyalty.

Its never going to run out as long as you have people caring more about the cowboys losing than their own team winning

look at first take and undisputed along with sunday football shows

main topic is how much they hate Dallas

Our stadium generates the most revenue because it’s the largest.

Doesn’t matter if new stadiums are built if they aren’t as big. Won’t generate as much revenue.

I’m guessing it won’t really decline. A lot the fans we have now will have kids that they will raise as Cowboys fans, then their grandkids, etc. The metroplex is also one of the most populated areas of the country and as it has grown, so has the Cowboys fan base, logically so. The Metroplex continues to grow with no signs of slowing down so the popularity will grow as well.

If the fan base was able to increase with the piss poor product that Jerry has put on the field for the past quarter of a century then I don’t see it declining any time soon.

I think you are on to something and it explains why I continue to hate the Lakers throughout the years even if they haven't been relevant in a while.

Yep . The DFW metroplex and all of Texas is booming. And to boot everyone moving here is bringing their fandom with them who are helping fill up the stadium and TV viewership .

He didn't build it, he exploited what was already there that Schramm had built.

What if he doesn't hire Johnson? What if he hires Switzer? Does he survive and still own the team?

Every NFL team has fans and within that, the passionate ones that do not demand winning to remain a fan, AZ, DET, WAS, CLE and BUF have their fanbases.

The Cowboys as a national TV vehicle are a mystery but TV feeds that by making sure they get shown more than any other team, including the defending champions. More exposure begets more exposure and more coverage.

I can only speak to my trips to TS when I had tickets and I went to some away games and other team's games as well when I travelled a lot. The Cowboys have the strangest fans I've ever seen, they are not demanding and attending a game back in the 80's with some really bad teams was an event, not a football game. A "good game" was a not a win or necessarily a well played game. If they showed up, that was a good game.

I really didn't enjoy attending a game because I couldn't cuss or try to break the sound barrier with the remote. I was what you might call a "rabid fan". My wife said I was a rabid something and when we'd buy a new TV, she'd ask how many remotes come with it.

Whatever this is, it will not die soon. Can't explain why it exists but it does. Many do not watch the NFL; they watch the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys will always be the NFL’s marquee franchise.

It’s been that way for 50 years, and even a quarter century of mediocrity has done nothing to undercut it.

A big part of it is their uniforms, the best looking in all of sports, particularly their home whites and seafoam green pants.

If the Boys actually start having meaningful success they could reach even greater heights of popularity and visibility, if that’s possible.

Its already lost momentum with me. Has for at least 10 years now.
The Cowboys have reached"Just another team" to me now.

They don't deserve their popularity.
