Something I was mocked and ridiculed for mentioning last training camp. As usual I am right. Music has no place during practice.

No music in practice
Dallas Cowboys practices under Jason Garrett often featured music of a great variety, especially during compete periods. Mike McCarthy was asked about how rarely music is playing during his practices.

“I think there’s a place for music. I think even more so than any year that I’ve coached in this league this is probably a year for not very much music. Right now looks like we’re going to be playing our first game with no fans. I think that what I’ve always done is you try to keep your training environment as close to the game situation as possible. The influx of music for me in the practices that I’ve had in the past, there’s a purpose for it. So when the offense is playing on the road, we’ll have music during their periods for communication challenge and things like that. We play music during the tv timeouts, there’s what, two or three of those a practice. I think music’s great, but I think it needs to be at the appropriate time."

This could be chalked up to being standard coach speak, but it does seem as if McCarthy has meticulously thought about every detail going into life with this team.

Music has no place at practice........

Except teams like the Pats and Eagles who have recently won super bowls let music play at certain points of practice.

This just seems like a quirk with McCarthy more than some sort of tried and true practice here.

The Patriots are playing music at their practices. . .

As for your argument, using this as a reference for something you said last year is dumb. McCarthy said it himself that the lack of music is to simulate game situations that will not have crowd noise, which is highly abnormal. If this were a normal season, I'm sure the music would be blaring. Weird thread

Here is an example. You claimed in the OP that music has no place in practice and you are apparently using McCarthy’s use of music as proof you are right. His first statement says “I think there is a place for music” and he goes on to explain he would use music to make communication difficult on the offense when playing on the road. He’s not using music right now because they aren’t going to be playIng the first game in front of fans.

This is not what I read. That was used as further justification as to why they are not playing music but it didn't not say that this was the primary or only reason. Not saying you said that either but I am saying that this is what the article seemed to suggest.

Mike McCarthy emits awesome music just by his mere presence.

The OP is beating his chest claiming he was right last year about music. He even stated in his 3rd sentence “music has no place at practice”.

Based upon what McCarthy said, does that support the OP’s view that music has no place in practice?

I have no idea, I'm just saying that the article is not specifically saying what was suggested earlier.

Fair enough. I didn’t read the article. I just went by what the OP decided to share in the first post, so maybe I am off base.

Does the article specifically say music has no place at practice?

I can understand not having music during most of practice, and as MM says, "I think even more so than any year that I’ve coached in this league this is probably a year for not very much music." After all, you want the guys to hear and understand everything you're teaching them.

Once they've got the plays down, loud music or crowd noise should be be played to practice in a loud environment.

I don't think he said NO music.

This is actually what the entire article said, based on McCarthy's alleged words:

I think that what I’ve always done is you try to keep your training environment as close to the game situation as possible. The influx of music for me in the practices that I’ve had in the past, there’s a purpose for it. So when the offense is playing on the road, we’ll have music during their periods for communication challenge and things like that. So he specifically says that there will be music at times but only where it benefits the over all objective, which is to set conditions. He doesn't say there will be no music. He doesn't say that there will be music playing all practice. He doesn't say that there will be more music in other training camps when Covid isn't an issue. He just says that he thinks there will be less this year and used only when trying to mimic game conditions, which make sense to me.

Full disclosure, I am not a fan of pipping in music, just to have music either. I like coaching when you can hear communications and when you can understand what the players are doing to make adjustments etc. It helps me understand what the player is seeing and consequently thinking when I can hear his calls. I also like it when Coaches talk to players during plays. It's important to receive that instruction in real time IMO. I don't want to coach players after the fact. I want to give that instruction right then. If I see a player doing something wrong, playing the wrong technique, I want to get to them right now and correct that. Easier when you can hear them and they can hear you IMO. I imagine that because we are putting in new Offensive Scheme and Defensive Scheme, there will be a lot of communications going on between players and Coaches. That may very well be the reason that McCarthy is in favor of less music right now, I don't know but I could certainly understand that. JMO

If you want to game prep for large loud hostile opposing fans do it blasting an air raid siren.
Music is useless.

Ok. I fail to see where my original summary of Mike’s reasons is wrong. Seems like we are all saying the same thing.

Regardless of how anyone feels about music, it’s still just an opinion. There is no right or wrong answer.
