Do we even need a top 5 defense with Dak leading the offense?

Bingo!!!!!! Like the way you talk .........exactly what I've said. This D is screaming for leadership. Somehow, someway we have to find a PLAYMAKER/BLUE CHIPPER, 2 would be even better.
I agree. You don’t need all blue chippers on defense, but you better have a dominant DL or you really have nothing. You have to be able to stop the run at will and keep the OL off your LBs. Other than DLaw, I cant remember a DL making plays in the backfield. Your defense has to be special at something, anything.

You are provving my point...as hall of fame that he is, they will go nowhere with their defense

Im a defensive guy myself. The defense they have now is bad. Good against the run, but cant rush the passer and secondary is very weak. But they get a better on D, and they can definitely win it with that offense. As it stand now they have a punchers chance.

With Dak and a healthy offense having the capability to put up 37 points a game, could we be a contender with an average defense? Is Jerry capable? How many drafts would it take to improve the defense enough to make us a true contender?
Only if we're interested in super bowls.

Russ is a freak of nature, only he can lead a team defensively challenged to a ring. I do not think at this point we/anybody can assume this offense will be a healthy unit next year, or in two years as a matter of fact. Tyron cannot be trusted, Martin is a beast but the last couple of seasons could be a sign of him wearing down. Collins? Who is he exactly? We have more question marks than a childrens book.

Now more than ever we need a brand new set of players/coaches for that stench, and it won't come under this ownership group unfortunately
He can? Hasn't yet.

Yeah if you want the ultimate prize you need a defense that can stop people. I don't think there is really any certain ranking you need per se.. You just need a group that can go out and get the ball back for the offense.. I don't care if they give up X yards per game or Y points per game.. as long as they can keep some team from driving 75 yards in 45 seconds to beat me at the end of games. The Cowboys have not had that defense in a very very long time. Which is why they haven't sniffed the championship round in a very very long time. No matter what the offense has been able to pull off, the defense could never be counted on when needed. Until that gets fixed I can't talk myself into this team ever becoming a serious championship contender. The good news is that there are a few B- to B+ players on the defense who would make nice complementary pieces to 3 or 4 A level playmakers. A sackmaster who refuses to be blocked on 3rd and long.. A corner/safety who can catch.. and a linebacker who separates people from the ball. Maybe as a bonus a disruptor a DT. In fact maybe start with that last one..

Mostly, to beat playoff QB's you need a DLine that can disrupt the pocket. That means 4 guys playing at a high level. And at least 2 quality backup DT's. The big hosses get tired.

some people are obsessed with Dak . and think he is the savior. he is not. But Dak is not nor was not the problem unitl he started demanding elite money. Money the cowboys need to fix this team .

Tony Romo was made the richest person in NFL...and got his elite team built for him. No excuses. Give Dak his elite money and give him his elite roster like we did with Romo.

Romo signed long term deals and often restructured. Dak is refusing.

1 out of 10.....its true a great offense will get you close, but defense wins championships.
It’s a different game nowadays so I think you can take all those numbers pre-2016 and toss ‘em out...

I dont think anyone is dismissing the importance of defense. The thought is how high up the ladder does the defense have to be? What does it have to be ranked high at? Total Defense is no longer a good measuring stick, imo.

Tony was not elite , nor is Dak elite . Dak had 5 years with the best OL/ WR/ RB combo , and could not engineer wins or any success in the playoffs . Time to rebuild this team with an affordable top 1 or 2 QB from the draft and use the savings to fix the huuuuge holes in the Defense , OL and DB .

Who is the talented GM that is going to properly use those draft picks to fill the gaps in the defense and other parts of the team?

Maybe not but we need a better than one of the worst in NFL history though.

The defense needs an overhaul and that includes crap canning the mediocre DC. He is one of a few hurdles to building a good defense to pair with a high flying offense.
Worst case scenario is we keep him and draft for his defense just to fire him and have wasted multiple picks.

I don't know if you can rely on 30÷ a week in a normal season.
So yeah, give me a top 7 defense at least
