Twitter: Stephen on TJ Watt: was in “serious contention” to be pick. “I wish we would’ve done that."

I get why they did it but it made no sense to pass up a player because of fit unless you felt like you had a long term solution at DC. Now you have changed schemes and you need a guy like Watt.

Thanks again Rod Marinelli!

You left quite the 'impact' on the Cowboys before you were removed.

You dont go 0-16 by accident.

That takes an exceptional situation.

Rod pulled it off. No idea how he ever worked again.

They are letting him earn a paycheck in Vegas put of loyalty, but I'm sure has zero influence.

This is the large problem with the GM by committee approach (which Jerry only does because he fully knows he cant handle it himself, yet wants all the credit if by chance it did)....the coaches have too much influence on draft picks.

Theres a reason that scouts scout and coaches coach.

Anyone can claim whatever they like, but Jerry's preferred way of doing things isnt working....and no other sports franchise operates even close to this way for a reason. Youd think 25 years of futility would teach a normal person that.

All it tells me is that ego beats logic in Dallas.

I have certainly noticed that Dallas brings in coaches for jobs that are clearly bigger than they can handle:
  1. Dave Campo - maybe a good secondary coach at one point, but a head coach? Clearly not.
  2. Chan Gailey - a good offensive coordinator at various stops, given a head coaching role in Dallas. Didn't work out.
  3. Wade Phillips - a good defensive coordinator in multiple stops, but proven to not be head coaching material in several stops. What did Dallas hire him for? You guessed it, head coach.
  4. Jason Garrett - He wasn't even a coordinator before he arrived in Dallas. Not only was he gifted the coordinator role, but ultimately head coach as well. We certainly know how THAT worked out.
  5. Rod Marinelli - A defensive line coach who was not only the defensive coordinator here, but given final say over the draft? Yeah, that's why we got Taco instead of TJ Watt, and Trysten Hill over Juan Thornhill (or several other safeties).

Taco was the better pure football player. The Cowboys got his best years out of him and then moved on. Smart move.

Doesn’t excuse the last 25 years
I'm not trying to excuse anything. I'm merely saying I thoroughly enjoyed and continue to enjoy the SBs of the 90's, and if you gave me a "Door #2" choice, not knowing what's behind the curtain, I'd still choose Door #1. I'd keep Jerry in the history of the franchise, rather than risk losing those days.

And on the heels of a historically bad defense, in the next draft we will probably be just as dumb and take a guy that better fits Nolan's "scheme".
Exactly. And so many people running around claiming "let's tank for the picks!". Idiots.

Yeah great....and guess what.....I would in trade all of that in a second to be in another situation than we are right now.

Someone would have bought the Dallas Cowboys as an investment and let them be run correctly as far as football ops, not to placate their own ego.

Sure fine....theres no guarantees there, but I'll about give you a guarantee NOW....this team wont win as currently constructed....for quite some time...if ever.

If that were true every team would be champions all the time. You live in a fantasy world.

The Gailey thing is what made the Garrett mistake drag on so long.

Jerry has said that one of his biggest mistakes was not giving Gailey more time...so he was hesitant to pull the trigger on Garrett thereafter.

One mistake snowballs into the next.

The drafts around the time of Gailey/Campo were SO awful, theres not a chance in the WORLD Gailey would have done any better if retained. Anyone can see and know that. Except one, who was the culprit behind thinking he can draft players on advice of Larry Lacewell, etc.

Again, more snowballs via not being able to admit mistakes.

That's exactly where the problem lies with this guy....his feelings about personal relationships and loyalty.

I'm a very loyal person, and I get where Jerry comes from at times....but it just doesnt work in his spot. He needs that middleman to do the right thing when needed. Not holding breath. In his mind, no one can do anything better than him.

It seems unlikely we'd have had 3 SB wins in 4 years if someone else had bought the team. We have no idea if we be high on the hog or mired in an even worse swamp.

Very true. Its unlikely another owner would have hired Jimmy Johnson. College football was not typically where NFL teams looked for coaches back in the 80's.

NEVER take an inferior player over a superior player because of "fit". You take the superior player and find a way to use him. Put him in positions to win. Otherwise you end up with a dead fish like Taco and a superstud like Watt making our offensive lineman look like fools tomorrow....LOL

TJ Watt is going to feast tomorrow. Not sure if I'm watching the game.

Dallas needs to always draft better player over “scheme fit”. Hope they learn their lesson.
