I'm good with Quinn.
He had good defensive units in Seattle plus he has HC experience.
Hopefully they can finally build a defense we can be proud of.

The easy cover 3 is my point. As soon as Darnold said it was easy, that should have been the end of allowing that philosophy anywhere near here. Stop chasing a 2 year wonder. I would have done backflips for Marvin Lewis or Rex Ryan over this

Are you basing this off Richard and Darnold's success against us? Because we need to remember that Richard ended up being fired as Seattle's DC a few years after he took over for Quinn. Even though he took over Quinn's scheme, that doesn't mean that he ran it exactly the same or as well as Quinn did.

IMO, there were some clear issues with what Richard tried to do in his time here, whether that's because his style clashed with Marinelli or for some other reason. However, Richard did not seem able to adjust to fix those issues.

There are a lot of coaches who run similar defenses, but some are better than others because they understand how to use the defense in their favor. In fact, defense mainly comes down to that rather than trying to confuse the offense with exotic looks. You can blitz out of any scheme, you can drop players into coverage out of any scheme, you can change coverages in any scheme.

He’s a better dc than head coach and with names I’ve seen I like him the best, so I’m good with it.

Look at his results away from the Legion of Boom. The last 3 years the Falcons opponent QB rating was 25th or worse. 4 years ago it was 19th.
wasted energy..moving on.... KR did squat away fro the LOB its talent more then coaching we had neither in 2020 and Nolan was the scapegoat's.. if we had Donald, leanord and Ramsey's Nolan would ahve been a lot beter IMO :))

I like this hire. His defense fits our personnel and he's a good DC.

Quinn’s scheme has been 25th or worse each of last 3 years in opposing QB rating for the Falcons. Being a HC does not absolve him when it’s been that bad 3 years in a row. 4 years ago it was 19th.

Teams have figured out the cover 3.

Food for thought:

That one play revealed some recurring problems with the Falcons defense as constructed by Quinn: gaping holes in the zone coverage, poor angles to pass-catchers and lack of speed in the secondary. The first two things on the list are related to Quinn’s defensive design and poor technique by his players. The lack of speed can be attributed to Quinn’s personnel preferences.

Quinn likes big and long cornerbacks who can play a physical technique. His safeties tend to be hitters more than runners. Those preferences show up with all the Falcons penalties for holding, pass interference and roughing. It also means the Falcons can struggle to run with wide receivers of even average speed (Brown ran 40 yards in 4.49 seconds at the draft combine).

Quinn coordinated an all-time great defense for the Seahawks in 2013 and a league-leading unit in 2014. There was a time it appeared he would successfully import that style as head coach for the Falcons. Quinn loaded the roster with draft prospects who fit his mold and had his guys on the come by the end of the Super Bowl season.

But the defense improved only marginally in 2017. Last year’s defensive struggles were attributed to injuries. I thought Quinn scapegoated coordinator Marquand Manuel, who did a solid job under the circumstances. Now the Falcons are healthier, Quinn is running the defense and it doesn’t look any better.

Here’s what CBS game analyst Adam Archuleta, an NFL safety for seven seasons, had to say about Quinn’s group as Tennessee closed out the victory:

"I just think when you look on the defensive side of the ball, they just need more play-makers and they need more players that can affect the game at different levels of their defense. They just haven't been able to make the plays on a consistent basis this year. To play this style of defense that Dan Quinn wants to play, you need game changers and you need difference-makers and I am not sure how many of those guys they have on the defensive side."

The Falcons have not reaped the potential benefits of a basic defensive scheme. They’ve suffered plenty from the drawbacks. It’s harder and harder for Quinn’s defensive approach to work in a pass-oriented league with rules designed to juice scoring. Even Seattle’s defense became average as the core players from those great teams departed.

I don’t understand the deep anger if this is the hire. I can understand him not being your preference and he’s not mine but I can’t sit here *****, scream and moan about how terrible it is because I truly don’t know. Personally I think he’s a guy whose a good coordinator and an average at best head coach.

that said he’s won a super bowl as a coordinator and coached in another Super Bowl as a head coach. Does that mean he will replicate that here? No but he does have a solid resume, was in the nfl as recently as last season and is a tough minded guy which is a personality trait we could use here.

not saying it’s a slam dunk but this “jerry strikes again” stuff is such hyperbole. Let’s see how it plays out but I’d rather him imo than a lot of the other names thrown out there tbh

During his only two years as a DC in Seattle, the Seahawks went to the Super Bowl. Of course, as the head coach of the Falcons his defense was not exactly the Legion of Boom - so who knows?

I think Jerry wants the defense to get back to competitive as soon as possible, to complement the offense which could be very good next season. An experienced coach that runs a 4-3 is probably the most likely way to get that done.
Problem is he didn’t have LoB talent in Atlanta and won’t have here. Success starts first and foremost with the players. Frankly, I’ll be happy if he can put enough lipstick on this pig to get it back to 2019 form. Anything more than that will be a very pleasant surprise. Changing schemes from 4-3 takes too long to get the players to run a 3-4.

Fiery guy, his style fits more then a 3-4 base for what we have at least.

But we need more talent or anyone we will hire produce similar results.

Media reporting Quinn is the favorite and MM wanted Joe Witt. So here we have Jerry picking the staff again and undermining his HC again if true. We should have a pretty good idea how this ends.

If this is the case, Mikes choice at DC just a season ago didn’t turnout so well so what do you expect? Joe Whitt Jr is a huge gamble. He could be great, but what if he isn’t?
