Perhaps. I’m not going to speculate. You asked why any player would. I gave an answer

if you want to focus specifically on Dak, I’d say because the last time he played under the tag he suffered a catastrophic injury that he could’ve been otherwise gtd against.
We aren’t tagging him again
Way to expensive
He’s gonna sign or walk
But no player takes a cheap first negotiated contract
Brady was highest paid on his and deserved it
He took a team friendly deal later in his career

The hard line was 5 years vs 4 years last season so now it's possible Dak doesn't take anything over three years. If that's the case it will be hard to get a deal done. If Dak doesn't like the terms he can play on another tag and hit free agency next offseason.
I’m sure he’ll take 4 years now. I think the prediction in the OP is spot on...just north of Watson’s contract.

So the tag is way too expensive, but you’re saying it’s the floor for negotiations?

below the tag =/= cheap. And there are a lot of pretty exceptional circumstances surrounding Dak. We will see, but if a 35 mil a yr deal could’ve reportedly gotten it done last year, and he missed the majority of the season, and there’s a shrinking cap... I could see the same deal getting it done

A deal makes his cap hit cheaper than the tag
I think he gets Watson money

Every year the market for a QB rises.

Its not Dak fault the cowboys made Dak bet on himself. Every year he proved himself. Mainly last year. No run game, no defense and Dak still was the team.
Every year we wait Dak's contract value goes up. Especially since he is only 27. Jerry and co should of signed him 2-3 years ago. Heck Dak would of signed the contract for 35 mil last year if jerry would of took out the clause that allowed him to be franchised again after that contract was up. Lets not forget Deshaun Watson is contract averages out to 39 million a year.
Dak sucked last year in the first half when it mattered.

He racks up points and stats when he's already down three scores. Yawn.

Yeah I agree there.

QB salaries skyrocketed there into a place that makes no sense.

I get that they are the most important player on the team but $40 million for one player??

Something is way off here.

Of course the owners will need to give something up in negotiations but I'd like to see something like this.

Its way out of hand.

QB's are the most important, but they cant do diddly without great players around them. They get way too much credit and way too much blame in my book.

Most assume it's 38-40 range

Because it is a new deal (so no earlier contract to help smooth out the cap hit) I don't see how the cap hit would be much different than the 37 tag figure. In fact, because he wants a 4-year deal, the cap hit will almost surely be at least that high.

Ummm, not accurate.
France left CAA which is the second biggest company and TOOK ALL HIS CLIENTS with him to the BIGGEST agency.
It was merely a money deal where France was basically a free agent.
France left his high powered clients cooling for a year ot make this move.
Now those new long term deals get signed under the new company.
It gave France the most leverage anyone has ever had over a scouting firm and he obviously got paid a great deal if not a flat %.

Dak's agreed to deal was just under 35M. And France had issues with bonus amount, how money was paid out and length of contract.
Dak got involved and was fine with total amount of ~34.5 AAV but wasn't signing just as is and they ran out of time.

Then what happened?? Dak went with France to the new agency. Same as the Bosas and his other massive name clientele.
France is the 3rd largest player roster with many of the biggest names and likely moves up to number 2 now that he has taken a lot of Sexton's guy with him.

If anything this year has taught Dak that France was 100% right.
The site tied to both agents and NFL teams has just suggested his market value is 5M AVV higher than the best prior deal offered AND for the 4 years he wanted all along.
France was never unreasonable.
Dak made 31.4 Million and returned to free agency.
No one with a brain thinks anyone lost here but hr Dallas Cowboys.

Isn’t Justin Simmons his client as well? LOL. Folks thinking Jerry can somehow sign him too. LOL

You’re crazy. Joe Montana didn’t need no Jerry Rice or Roger Craig or Dwight Clark or any of those 49er has-beens to win those Super Bowls.

That sounds about right but I'm guessing the APY will be closer to $38.5M but that's pulling strings. One thing I'm sure of, his APY floor is $37.7M ( amount of 2nd tag )

https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-2021-free-agency-top-100-free-agents
1. QB DAK PRESCOTT
The prize of the free agent market, Prescott went down with an unfortunate injury after just four-plus games in 2020. With four full seasons under his belt, Prescott has finished in the top 10 of PFF grades twice while ranking closer to 20th in the other two seasons. However, Prescott’s 85.2 PFF grade this season would’ve been a career-best, and his 2019 and 2020 work is the most productive of his career.

From a macro view, Prescott’s play dipped as his supporting cast took a step back, but a revamped receiving corps has had Dallas’ offense moving the ball efficiently with Prescott at the helm. With solid accuracy, decision-making and mobility, he has proven capable of putting up high-end production, and he appeared on his way to establishing himself as an annual “top-eight” quarterback prior to his injury.

Contract Analysis: A second franchise tag would be valued at $37.7 million for Prescott, so the two sides finally agree to a long-term extension just above that on an annual basis.

Prediction: Cowboys sign Prescott for four years, $158 million ($39.5M APY): $115M total guaranteed, $75 million fully guaranteed at signing.
Awesome sauce!

I doubt it.
Watson is going to break the quarterback market And is projected to fetch no less than 3 1sts and yet NFL GMs all still rate Prescott as far and wide the #1 quarterback that could hit the open market.

Only 6 quarterbacks drafted since the year 2000 average 30 touchdowns, 4,000+ yards, and a 95+ passer rating a season.

aaron Rodgers
Drew Brees
Russel Wilson
Patrick Mahomes
Deshaun Watson
.....
And

Dak Prescott.

quarterbacks don’t grow on trees.

Dak had 4 no 1 picks and a # 2 pick on the off-line.
He had a top HB and WR and a top 10 defense.
End result 8-8.
Dak-crush logic is simply insane!
Dak isn't worth 40 million Jelly beans .......

People forget watson is already signed to a new deal last season. He is averaging 39mil a year.
He got the contract Dak wanted. 4 year deal.

You are correct. Its ashamed people think good QB's are just out there. Look at Darnold, the giants QB, Paxton Lynch (who everyone wanted) and etc. Good QB's aren't just sitting around begging to be signed by someone. Each Year Dak gets better and better yet people complain and think someone like Dalton could do just as good. People forget we were a top 5 offense when Dak was QB and that's with no run game.

it doesn’t since they don’t have a year to play with, they squandered that opportunity. Unless they’re able to sign him to a long deal I guess. And I think he’ll probably get Watson money as well. Just can see him accepting to less after all that’s transpired.
