How much difference is the key. Is the difference in talent worth $20M? On a scale of 1-100, where is Dak and where is Stafford? How much is the team better with Stafford at $20M and an additional $20M worth of players on defense vs Dak at $40M?

4th quarter Dak > 4th quarter Stafford.

Your point is valid, but on the scale of 1-100, even 1 or 2 points could be the difference between a win and a loss, and if Dak has the leadership skills so many insist he has, the scales would tip heavily in his favor, as I've never heard the same said of Stafford. Leadership is something this team needs.

You guys didn't like Dak when he was paid 1 million a year. Stop trying to make it out to be about money. Not only that but Stafford isn't getting paid 20 million so that can go out there window as well. Even with 20 million to bring in players, when has Jerry done well in free agency outside of the 90s? You draft well and pay those guys. Over spending in free agency hardly ever works, look at the giants who spent 100 million on defense in free agency.

How many points is the defense better if the defense gets an added $20M? That could be the difference in 2-4 games.

'You guys?' I liked Dak from Day 1. I still like Dak as the Cowboys' QB. Just don't like him at $35-40M/year which will hinder the team from being competitive.
Team first. Perhaps 'you guys' (whoever you are) don't understand that. Signing Dak does not happen in a vacuum. There are other considerations.

I want the Cowboys to win. I do not care who is QB.

LOL....That is absurd. They are going to look a lot different next year when their covid-absent players return. QB is the missing piece for them to compete. Of course they are not the team they were a couple of years ago, but to dismiss Belichick as an irrelevant participant in 6 rings and countless playoff records is silly.
They gonna pick up a WR when??????? Now that Brady is gone its time to get WR help? Absurd........

Mahomes is averaging 45 million a year. Is that hindering his team from being competitive?

Maybe, if they found the right guys to pay, which they typically don't seem to do. I think it's better to use the draft picks on defense and O-Line solidity.

every single successful team in the post season (except those that have had top 10 picks for a decade) have made significant signings in FA

these are not your fathers NFL days anymore. You HAVE to make good draft picks but you also HAVE TO make significant acquisitions in FA. That “player here or there” has to an impact player not from the trash heap

the window is 2-3 years unless you have an elite QB. We don’t
significant is different than building a team through FA....you can not BUILD a team through FA....you may sign a key player here or there, or even make a trade ala Cooper....I never denied that, but if you can not draft and I 100% agree. you have to make good drafts which is one thing we haven't had in the past 15 years on the defensive side of the ball. our defensive drafts are just down right awful.

not to mention I think the entire lions roster hated matt Patricia and Patricia is back in New England.

plus did Matt Patricia even have serious interviews offers from other NFL teams ?
Seems like the DC job market was dried up for him and Wade Phillips ...

you are first creating an idiotic straw an and then arguing against yourself

Can you show me where I said BUILD THE TEAM THROUGH FA?

show me

that’s the sign of a person who doesn’t have a leg to stand on

Stafford is gonna wanna be traded to a team contending for a playoff such as Indy, Pats, or Niners
i still think he can play in NFL and be a contender in right place, right team, right HC, such as previous three.
Could a Washington also make a bid for Stafford ?
i would not give up a 1st rd pick for a guy his age, but i could see a 2nd rd. in the mix..

Jax- nope to Stafford, they will go with Travor Lawrence No.1 overall
Jets - could get closer to Watson sweepstakes . Sam Donald could packaged in Watson trade deal Houston with No.2 overall and Donald ?
Chicago- what's the likihood of Lions trading a prominent player within their own division ?
Carolina- i dunno how Panthers really feel about Bridgewater as long term answer. He's a serviceable backup, imo. QB rich draft to take advantage.

30 something QB starting to see injury issues. Hmm, where have we seen that before?

If you're about to say he is an upgrade over Dak, you are wrong.
maybe not but for $43MM over the next two years and what an extension for Dak looks like, Dak certainly isn't twice as good. Lot of coin to use for other parts of the team.

even better if you could get Dak to agree to a sign & trade which could net you MS & draft capital in addition to cap savings.

the guys that played yesterday were significantly older than Stafford. you should be confident that he's got some good years left plus give him some protection so the doesn't take 42 sacks (i believe that is right) and his health improves.

I'm from Detroit and will say Stafford is on par with Romo skill wise no lie maybe better. What you dont realize is the Lions are by far the worst run team in the league historically. If you dont believe me look at Sanders and Megatron maybe the best ever at there positions and said I'd rather retire earlier than play for this **** hole organization!
You are talking above the "everthing is the QB's success or failure club" ability to understand. But bless you. Some of us at least try to separate the wheat from the chaff.

from a football perspective Matt probably views SF and Indy as the best landing spots. his wife however will have some say and isn't a fan of Covid measures which would make SF unappealing. with all the QB needy teams some of it will just come down to which domino's tumble first and which way they go. If Watson were traded, Fitzmagic signed to start somewhere, etc., the landscape could shift.
