I see what you're saying but my point is just to take care of business and if you're good enough, the extra money will be there. For example, he signs a 5-year deal and wins a Super Bowl year 3, the leverage is all his. He can force the Cowboys to redo his deal or trade him.
You and I both know it would never play out like that. The vast majority of fans will whine about it and tell Dak to honor his contract, and that he should have negotiated better on the front end and not expect the Cowboys to come back to the table when he agreed to the deal. Most fans ridiculously believe that you can't "outperform" your contract, but are cool with underperformers being cut or asked to take less money.

I really don't envision the Cowboys and Dak reaching a long term deal anytime soon. The situation is even more messy than last year, with Dak looking better than ever, but also having a gruesome ankle injury.

Agree with La Canfora that we all know this is heading to a second franchise tag
disagree. Both sides lost leverage. Dak gambled and broke even. He got injured badly. He may not be 100% by the opener. Dallas screwed the pooch by not acting more diligently last year. Daks agent is largely to blame here. ALL PARTIES INVOLVED LOOK BAD EQUALLY. Dak won't be playing on the tag again.

He is going to make 37.7m on the franchise tag, guaranteed. I understand job security. But Dak comes across as a smart guy, if he suffered a another catastrophic injury that ends his career he made almost 70m dollars in 2 seasons.
While understood...he would make even more money if he can get a long term deal done with the guaranteed money up front.

I wish we would make a play for Zach Wilson.. I don't know how we would do it but I think he's perfect for us.
Wouldn’t hurt my feelings. But say we did, and Zach only ends up playing about as well as Dak ever did, and the contract is due for an extension, then who do we blame?

I don't believe that having language included excluding the use of another franchise tag is an unreasonable ask by Prescott and his people. Nor is asking for the inclusion of a no trade clause as well.

If he is "your" guy, commit to him. They have played their hand regarding him since his rookie year. So, as long as the numbers are reasonable enough to still have room to field a talented team around him, and the years are agreeable enabling the team to spread his cap hit...add the language and get it over with. If he isn't your guy...tag and trade him and move on.

As an aside, knowing he wants this language leads me to presume that Prescott won't budge on wanting a shorter deal so he can test the market again sooner rather than later.
This is going to come as a shock to some fans
Player don’t like the franchise tag
If I was a player and I could get it removed I would too

The owners disguised it as a "reward" for players, but its really about controlling a player, not rewarding them at all.

We move on from him and find someone else.

You got 5 years to show you are elite or win a championship.

Just because this market says you get paid like you are elite or a Superbowl Champion doesn't mean you have to participate in the stupidity.

I really like Wilson but him playing for the Jets just looks like a terrible fit.

Exactly
I get why owners wanted it
I get why players hate it
I don’t get why fans blame a player for wanting to benefit from their short career where many leave with lifetime changes to their bodies

If he’s not signed long term...then he ain’t playing...why would he? he broke his ankle on the tag last year...no way he chances that again...

this clown reporter has no more info about the situation than any of us.

he’s just wants to stir the pot...

Or you're hedging your bets in case Wilson looks horrible so you dont make another idiotic claim about how smart you are about player evaluation.

First, here are the cold facts. Dak is the one good thing going for the Dallas Cowboys. In order to keep him around in 2021, the Cowboys are going to have to pay the piper to the tune of around $40 million (contract extension) or a little over $37 million (franchise tag).

Here, is my speculation on what happens. Dak wants to be a Cowboy but he will have to force the Cowboy's hands to get the deal he wants. He will take offers from other teams and find a better deal from another team. The Cowboys will match it and sign him to that deal.

Almost the entire NFL is in agreement with me. Be mad at them too and not just me. I was just earlier to the party then they were.

90 percent of the NFL has Dak in the top ten in the league at QB. You cant pick and choose when to listen to insiders and when not to my friend

I never said Dak wasn't good.

I think Dak is good. Keep up.

I've been very clear what kind of QB's I think should be given elite money to and the Dak's of the league shouldn't get it unless they already have a title like Flacco.

Lol, better than ever. Down 3+ touchdowns to Cleveland and Atlanta, and losing to the lowly Giants when he got hurt.
